if you read them wrong it means you can't read them. most english words have rules, some words don't have rules, you have just to accept them even break the rules of phonics . most words follows phonical rules.there are Many foreign words that are now part of english for example french words, dutch words,... so the rules do not apply to those. Did you know that hundred years ago  more people could read better than now in the USA because at that time every school taght phonics but then later on they changed it , they don't teach phonics any more because ministry of education thought that students will learn how to read by themself so result is many native speakers can't read properly even spell wrong sometimes just because most school do not teach phonics and it takes years for students to read proper English , it doesn't mean that ones can't read in 3 months.

I met many students who always worry about their pronounciation.
Finally they can not speak of what they want to speak.

Students in Laos should emphasize more on speaking, not just open a book
and read.

Wow, that's just unbelievable!!!!!

My curiosity is that:
1. what is the minimum level of English a student should have?
2. Do students understand the meaning of words? I dont think they can understand all words that they can read
3. Can students read a sentence or a paragraph with proper tone and intonation or just word by word ?
I dont mean to underestimate your skills.

If students can learn how to read correctly in 3 months, the National University of Laos should send English teachers to learn the methodology with you.

Students need a foundation and being able to read is that foundation. Yes, I agree that students here need to speak more but if they cannot read than they'll have to rely on memorization. Being able to read means that they'll be able to study textbooks and anything other books that interests them.
Do not get me wrong, but students won't be reading their textbooks all the time. The first three months will be intensive reading (Phonics) and after that they'll be issued with textbooks. Intensive oral English will be taught after the Phonics program and students will at least be able to go home and study because they can read and not rely on memorization only. Most language schools issue textbooks but don't bother with teaching how to read them. Most don't even care what level the students are and just push them in any class that's fits the school, not the student. Easy money, I'd say. It's about time that more emphasis should be given on proper education and not only on making money.
Pronuncation: if you know Phonics you won't have to worry about pronunciation since you'll know the sounds and how to spell the word phonetically. Plus, you won't have to rely on others to read YOU the word.

It really does take only three months, for some even less. For instance, while still in Taiwan, I taught a 12-year old the entire program in 6 weeks. At a kindergarten, also in Taiwan, K3 students (age 6~9) finished the program in 3 months and from then on were hooked on reading. We talked about the pictures, the story, etc., very intensive oral English. Their oral English really went through the roof. By the way, in a reading contest they beat all other classes, even those twice their age and who had been studying for at least six years. Non of the K3 students lost.
Now, I never said reading with understanding for the Phonics program. The aim is to have students learn how to read, to get fluency in reading, proper tone and intonation. Still, while doing the program they'll be taught the meaning of many useful words. After the Phonics program the emphasis will be on meaning although students will learn the meaning of many words. So, in this way we won't have to concentrate on two things but only on oral English. You'd be surprised how much easier it is for students AND teachers if you only have to focus on one thing.
Students will read with the proper tone, intonation and fluency.
I've taught Phonics to K2 and K3 levels (age 5~7) but I think a six year old will have a better understanding. In fact, my best readers ever were a K3 class (see above). Native speakers can start as early as K1, in fact.
I prefer students who don't speak any English at all as they are the easiest to teach. Trying to teach someone who speaks broken English is a very demanding job.
Now, how often do you hear students say that they can read, that they understand grammar but don't know how to talk? Well, if they can do the first two than they shouldn't have any problem with the third. Then again, I cannot teach anyone HOW to talk but I can teach them how to speak English. My way of teaching is not only based on reading, far from it. Reading or phonetical awareness, to me, is the foundation. A strong foundation is needed if you want to build upon it.
Why don't schools teach it? Well, like I was told at quite a few language schools in Taiwan, "we'll lose business if students learn to read in such a short time," in other words, keep them dumb so that they'll stay longer and we can make more money. And many are just too blind or naive to want to change their teaching plans.

What is the use of being able to read them all in 3 months if you don't understand the text?  The exercise is meaningless.  Understanding is far more crusial ingredient than anything else.  I live in the English speaking country for over 20 years, sometimes I still have difficulties understanding what they were talking about.   By the way.  Is my grammar correct guys?

I'll say it one more time: reading is the foundation. If you can read then you can focus on speaking. If you want to learn to play the piano you'll need to get yourself a piano first too, right? If you want to play classical piano you'll need to study scales and etudes, right? Why? Because they're the foundation. They'll give you, upon having mastered them, the skill and technique needed to play music. Unless you're blessed with perfect pitch and play about anything you hear.
I don't care whether some think it's useless or not. That's up to them. So far it has worked for all the students I've taught and they and their parents have all been very happy with the results.
Uhm, if you've lived in an English speaking country for over 20 years and still have difficulty understanding what they're talking about, well, perhaps you need to read and talk more. Ever heard of being culturally literate? You know, even native speakers who seldom or never read usually end up having poor vocabulary and grammar. Mind you, I'm not referring to you or taking a stab at you. But believe, you will gain a lot of knowledge from reading and it'll certainly improve your language skills.
I've lived in Taiwan for 25 years and I've fared pretty well speaking and understanding Mandarin Chinese. I understood it enough to cut through all the red tape to be able to get my visa extensions and finally acquiring Chinese citizenship.
Besides English, I also speak Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Afrikaans and Maltese. Weren't it for phonics and reading a lot in these languages I wouldn't be able to call myself fluent in these and certainly not being culturally literate.
Understanding is crucial. Sure, but why focus on two things when you can focus on only one since you've mastered the other. Once again, first learn the basics and you'll gain much more in the end. First learn to read and than focus on meaning and oral English. At least when you go home you'll be able to refer to your textbooks unlike those that can't read and therefor can't study. Any teacher who teaches a textbook students can't read is in the wrong profession or just cares for the easy money.

I think if you only concentrate on teaching student how to read, with those difficult phonetic symbol, then it will turn the class to be very boring and some students may dislike english entire their life. aww

Where did I say that I will only concentrate on teaching students to read?

My classes are fun; it's not what you teach but how you teach.

I can see that you are confusing Phonics with K.K.which is taught in quite a  few Asian countries. Students in Taiwan, e.g., study it for three years and still can't read. Yet they insist that if they don't know K.K. that they can't read. So, what if you do know K.K. and you have difficulty reading a word. Well, you'll need a dictionary first as you'll only find K.K. in those. Who carries a dictionary with them at all times? No such thing if they know Phonics. Did you study K.K.?Believe me, I know it is boring and totally useless.

Please read my previous posts and tell me where it says that I'll only teach reading. If you had read them correctly and with comprehension, you'd have noticed that I said three months of Phonics followed with intensive oral      English. Even during the Phonics program students will learn basic and daily used conversational English.
My students liked me a lot for my lively way of teaching. Maybe your teacher
was a terror?

Someday, when you have kids of your own, you'd wish that his/her/their
school had a solid reading program. Or will you just accept them to be bad
readers?

Thank all of you for your contributions. Alas, classes are about to start so
I won't have that much online time availabe.

Cheers!

Thank you for your suggestions, I forgot to mention that, I am working in a scientific area, I read, write and speak English 80 - 90% a day.   If your method is a fast method, and people can benefit from it in a short time, COOL!  Hopefully they will be able to read all scientific words as well.  Good luck with them.
