Anyone here KFC ?

While its recipe for franchisee profits and deep fried chicken pieces certainly isn’t to everyone’s taste, KFC is reportedly soon opening its first store in Cambodia. Apparently future expansion plans include KFC outlets for Laos and Burma. I have previously written about the dire state of the foreign fast food market in Burma. Although my piece is a few years old, it may be worth a look for anyone looking to learn a bit more about what happens in a land of “fake” McChickens.

But McDonalds isn’t the issue here. KFC has something potentially much more interesting going on.

What intrigues me most about this KFC expansion into some of the poorer parts of Southeast Asia is inspired by a recent experience in Kolkata. Late one afternoon, after a stint in the distant mountains of northeast India, I went looking for a dose of the Colonel’s special herbs and spices.

I don’t want to get overly emotional about this but I was struck, and very impressed, by the fact that almost all of the staff at this particular KFC are deaf. The place worked perfectly; customers are expected to point out their order on a small menu, and then “the system” takes over. It is easy and simple and fast. And in a town as tough as Kolkata I imagine that the opportunities available to many deaf people are few. A job at KFC must, for some, be a lifeline and a chance to build a great future for their families.

Anyone who wants to read more about this approach to KFC staffing can learn more in these pieces (from Malaysia, Singapore, Pakistan and Egypt). It is clear that this is company policy - they want to hire people from a traditionally disadvantaged section of society. From what I saw of the KFC in Kolkata this is a simple, yet brilliant, idea. And, according to these accounts from around the world, it works well for everyone. In my case, the “Colonel’s Choice Burger” was fresh, and the customer service was top-notch. The server even tried to “suggestive sell”.

I wonder if this approach to staffing will be on the menu as the KFC brand is introduced to places like Phnom Penh, Vientiane, Yangon and Mandalay. Training people to run a KFC, and exposing them to all of its good points, and flaws, is one thing. It is a very different thing to deliberately seek out a highly competent yet disadvantaged part of society to be at the heart of a new business.

KFC is blazing a trail here. There is no reason, in my mind, why the Fujis, the Burger Kings and the MK Sukis of this world can’t follow suit. What do New Mandala readers think? Is this the type of corporate policy that should be encouraged? Will we be seeing it in Burma or Laos any time soon?

4 KFC stores Phnom Penh annually ... can you digest it all?

KFC.jpgQSR plans 4 KFC stores in Phnom Penh annually

Tuesday April 29, 2008

By YVONNE TAN
The Star Online (Malaysia)

PHNOM PENH: QSR Brands Bhd hopes to set up four Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlets a year in Phnom Penh.

This is given the robust growth of the city's tourism industry, said chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim.

He said four outlets would be set up by year-end with a total investment of US$1mil.

“The immediate plan is to open three more here this year,” he said after the launch of Cambodia’s first KFC restaurant here yesterday.

Ali said the company would subsequently expand to other populous cities such as Siem Reap and Sihanoukville.

“Tourism here is growing rapidly. We hope to establish outlets to cater to the increasing number of foreign visitors,” he said.

He added that QSR obtained the franchise to operate KFC restaurants in Cambodia last year through its 46.79% associate company KFC Holdings (M) Bhd.

QSR is the operator of 489 KFC outlets in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Cambodia. It is also the franchisee for Pizza Hut.

The new outlet is operated by Kampuchea Food Corp Ltd, a joint-venture company set up by QSR; Cambodian investment and development company The Royal Group of Co Ltd of Cambodia; and Hong Kong-incorporated strategic investment holding firm Rightlink Corp Ltd.

QSR has a 55% stake in the joint-venture company while The Royal Group and Rightlink each has 35% and 10% interest.

On when the new outlet would break even, Ali said: “Hopefully, in a year but this is a long-term investment.'' Currently, overseas operations contribute 30% to QRS’ sales.

“We hope it will be much higher after this,” Ali said, adding that he expected Malaysian sales to also grow at double digit this year.

Despite rising prices of raw materials, Ali is confident of the group’s financial performance, going forward. “This year will be better than last year,” he added.

On a possible price increases in its products, he said: “Only if it is absolutely necessary but we will try to maintain prices for now.”

Meanwhile, the Cambodian government hopes Malaysia will continue to grow its investments in the country.

"China is currently Cambodia's biggest investor while Malaysia ranks ninth or 10th," Cambodia's Senior Minister of Commerce Dr Cham Prasidh said.

I thought it was really cool that KFC had deaf people working at their stores. Actually, I've never noticed deaf people in Laos. In the U.S. I sometimes see people signing at cafes and colleges. I took a semester of American Sign Language and realized that different countries have their own sign languages just like hearing people have English, Lao, Mandarin, Japanese, French, etc.

I wonder what kind of sign language deaf people in Lao use. Does anybody know?

About KFC, I guess it doesn't really matter to me that much whether it's in Vientiane or not. The only problem I could see is people eating less healthy and getting fat as a result.

i'm not sure if KFC will be a sucess chain in Laos.. there's nothing fancy about KFC other than deep fried chickens.

there's KFC everywhere in U.S. and probably about 10 stores in my town. The last time I ate there was probably 15 years ago. it is really greasy food..

Oh good to know that. It is a sign of development, but when they are in Lao? next 5 years?

I read another article in Pasalao, and I learned that they already got 4 strores in PP. More over, they already had Pizzahut and Pizzacompany.

It look that we walk to slow behind others. I am sorry to say that, but i mean in positive way.

KFC would be a failure in Laos. There are many tasty frieds dishes in Laos that are healthier than KFC. Why would someone want friend chicken when in Laos, certainly not me.

i personal think it s not a good idea to open KFC in Laos, because its business is going bad if the birdflu (chicken flu)whatever occur in Laos, they wont have the chicken suppliers. I suggest make a similar with KFC one and don't use the chicken, use frog or some insect instead..

You are absolutely right. Laotian people don't need to consume saturated fat. But we definitely need  good moneys to live better.

P.S. If you fear of heart disease, please make yourself excercise twice a day.

I love KFC, and how tender and tasty their chicken is. There must be hundreds of outlets all over Manila and the Philippines, but I never get tired of KFC so that when I travel in Asia, I always look for their KFC at least once. It can be a sign of development so I hope people will keep an open mind about it. Give it a try and if you dont like it, then do not ever patronize it again. That sounds fair.
