Keothavong laughs off Safina mauling

PARIS (AFP) — Hapless Anne Keothavong laughed off her French Open 6-0, 6-0 mauling by world number one Dinara Safina, insisting she's tough enough to take the 'double bagel' jokes which will come her way.

Keothavong's centre court humiliation came on her Roland Garros debut and followed a promising week in Warsaw where she had become the first British woman in 26 years to reach the semi-finals of a WTA claycourt event.

"I'm not going to walk out and slit my wrists or anything," said the world number 48.

"You just have to find ways to laugh about it. What else is there to do? I'm sure there will be a few jokes about it, but I can take it.

"Disappointed is probably an understatement, but these things happen, and you just have to move on and forget about it."

Keothavong, 25, one of three British women in the main draw, admitted that the conditions suited top seed Safina and that the outcome may have had a different complexion if she had managed to get onto the scoreboard early.

"The court, the ball, everything, suits her game style. She has a pretty heavy ball. Everything was bouncing up pretty high and I always felt like I was on my back foot.

"Had I got myself on the scoreboard at the start, I think it could have been a different match. It would have helped relax me a little bit out there."

Safina, bidding for a maiden Grand Slam title and the runner-up to Ana Ivanovic here last year, admitted it was hard to feel sympathy for her opponent when she had a job to complete.

"When I shook her hand, she said: 'At least you could give me one game'," said the Russian who now faces compatriot Vitalia Diatchenko for a place in the last 32.

"I can imagine it's not nice to feel that way on the court, but I was just so into myself. I was playing with my head in the match, so I didn't really focus."

She may feel that she has a bad blood with her, and don't want anyone to say that she is half Lao, because she wants to be real 100% english.

Where did you find that out from? What magazine? What interviews??  Don't just go around and things up dude.  As far as I've been following her progress, she always been proud of being Laotian.  Although, she lives and represent UK - but she still very much laotian.

Something about our lao people, if someone is about to making it big and there's always people trying to shoot them down. Why???  Instead of being more positive and supportive of each others.  This is why most laotians doesn't get anywhere far..

If you positive that she said those words... prove it!!!! show me the article.. link it so everyone here can go read it and be the judge for themself...

Seeharhed hit it on the spot.  That's a typical Lao people with thoughtless comments.  Should be happy for her, happy for our people because typically, she's representing us on a big stage.  She does well or not, it shouldn't matter, what matters is that she's there getting it done.  I don't see anyone of you here doing what she's doing beside putting each other down.

did you ever listen to her interview, she is very proud of her heritage. she was to laos once and planned to go every chance she might have, remember once she said, even laos is poor, she loves the country and lao ppl, the way (lifestyle) of life. i think her dad is from palan or meuang phinh, savannakhet and her mom is from south of laos or v/s don't remember.

...............................and don't want anyone to say that she is half Lao, because she wants to be real 100% english............................................................

you must be joking right ? both of her parents are laotianes, how someone would call her half lao?!

she is britain, because she was born in London, England, but  her heritage is laotiane, she speaks very good in lao (i heard when she speak with our lao ppl) and she is happy with that.

check out on her site and learn to consider one of us sucess in life.

I don't think the person that make that statement is a laotian or the person don't care about our country and people in general.
