Why do people from Vientiane and Nong Khai have different accents? Considering they are so close to each other geographically.
I don't know why.
I was born in Nong Kai that is not much different at all. There are some because of school teaching Thai but for the local people not much different. I am Thai citizen but I am not ashamed to be Lao by blood or ethnicity.
Kon Udon are more the same accent with kon Vientiane than kon Nong Kai even Udon is farther than Nong Kai.
Well , it has been over 200 years that Esan are under Siam and the culture have been mix and have been taught Thai language for so long and of course there will be a lo of change. Not only kon Nong Kia or the whole Esan and Chiang Mai are changed but Lao people in Laos as well. Lao language itself are changing with Thai accent and vocabulary also.
That is very easy to prove that most of Lao people could read , speak and understand Thai without taking Thai lessons .

I was born in Nong Kai and my accent is not that much different from the people from Vientiane . Vientiane people themselves also have different accent from ban to ban around Vientiane. I have a lot of relatives and family and friend are living in Vientiane .
I don't understand the point of asking this question. Duhhhhhh... Is like asking why Canadian and American speaks differently??

yes you are right? why didn't ask '' why do vientiane people have different accent? the answer is, the one who has different accent is not native vientiane. perhaps the guy who creat this topic heard some chiangmai people speak in nongkhai .haha
Even people who live in Vientiane speak with different accents for example: people from Ban Soun Mon and Ban Na No they have slightly different Vientiane accents. You may not be able to tell if you come from other provinces of Laos. Anyway, it does not matter what accent one has, it is more important to focus on how one speak.

I think you don't understand history. People from Nong Khai were Lao and it wasn't that long ago that Thailand annexed it. I imagine that when Nong Khai was part of Laos or even part of Vientiane city it self they must have spoken with the same accent as Vientiane people since they're just across the river.
they are the same accents, you might heard their thai accents. Nakhonphanom 's accent is very close with thakhek people's , but thai nakhonpanom always say" Kap" in the end of sentences .
You wrong my friend... we vientiane and nongkhai dont have same accent like you said... because you are live in province that ;s why u cant distinguish..
we vientiane people have developed our tone several decades which is more clear, polite sound gentle... which nong khai people sound like from other province of Laos
I think you are the one who wrong... The thing is..why Lao teen prefered to speaking in Thai-Isaan language than speaking in pure Laos. That mean they have more develpment of the language than us. Telling uou the true. I think you knew that!!! Right?
Why you talk about esan is to far talk about vientiane start from ban that khao to ban bo o thana how many (ban) at least 5 ban thay are all different accent
