Four damn hydropower plants start producing this year in LAOS
Permalink

viientiane - Four new hydropower plants are scheduled to begin commercial operation this year in Laos, which aims to become the 'battery of ASEAN' in the near future, media reports said Wednesday.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines said electricity generation at hydropower plants Nam Ngum 2 and Nam Lik 1-2 in Vientiane province, Nam Nhone in Bokeo province and Nam Theun 2 in Khammouane province was expected to begin before year-end, the Vientiane Times reported.

Nam Theun 2, Laos' largest hydropower plant with an installed electricity generating capacity of about 1,088 megawatts (MW), is expected to start operations in April, according to sources at the World Bank, which is a guarantor of loans to the project.

The plant is to supply electricity to both the domestic market and neighbouring Thailand, generating about 270 million dollars a year for Laos, one of the world's poorest countries.

Nam Ngum 2 hydropower, ( Nakai, khammuance ) with an installed electricity generating capacity of 615 MW, is also due to open this year, exporting all its electricity to Thailand, the Vientiane Times reported.

Another plant to open this year, Nam Lik 1-2 hydropower plant, with installed electricity generating capacity of 100 MW, is to supply the domestic market, as is the Nam Nhone hydropower plant, with a generating capacity of 2.4 MW.

Nan Nhone is Laos' first small power plant project, being jointly developed by the Lao and French private sectors.

The plant is to supply the Electricite du Laos grid in Bokeo province in Northern Laos.

At present, there are another 17 power plants in the planning stage in Laos, and 45 others undergoing feasibility studies.

The Communist government of Laos, a mountainous nation with abundant water resources, has set a goal of becoming the 'battery of ASEAN.'

Laos joined the Association of South-East Asian Nations in 1997, which also includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The government has signed agreements to provide 7,000 MW of energy to Thailand by 2015, and 3,000 MW to Vietnam by 2020.

If we need to build one, where should be appropriate location in Laos? i heard that the NUCLEAR POWER PLANT SHOULD BE LOCATED NEAR THE RIVER, SEA AND FAR FROM THE VILLAGE.

I actually agree with the "NUTS" guy.  Nuclear power plants are very expensive to build and maintain, also safety is absolute paramount.  What are we going to do with the nuclear wastes?  They've a shelf live of tens of thousands of years.

Ah Nuclear fusion, wouldn't that be nice to have endless supply of cheap energy with no polution nor harmful wastes.  I think they've been talking about this for the last 40-50 years without any break through in sight.  I wouldn't hold my breath on it yet though as at this stage it's still science fiction.

Nuclear fusion and it is the same equation of Albert Einstein E=MC2  that will develop plasma rocket engine that could travel super speed. Laser, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion, cell phone ....all come pointing at E=MC 2 (Albert Einstein) or even the theory of the Big Bang how the universe began 13.7 billion years ago.

We're still far far from commercial use of nuclear fusion, if ever.  Otherwise those foreign companies wouldn't have build or planning to build dams in Laos.

I believe you but Nuclear fusion has been studied for decades, but has never been commercialised due to the impracticality of replicating the solar reactions in a controlled environment.  But who knows what future will hold.

Politic just like electric car that the oil companies don't want to build. The technology is here today.

Yes I saw the film "Who killed the electric cars".  I was very interesting.  Do you know that GM was a decade ahead of the Toyota back then?  Damn Hummers!

There will be no nuclear waste . Don't use the uranium and don't use nuclear fission but use nuclear fusion the same way the sun . Use plasma to break the atom turn hydrogen to helium(Deuterium and Tritium are every where on earth from rock and water).

Since Laos in the future going to have many dam and reservoir. I suggest all Lao invest in Development of a new and unique lodge right near the reservoir. Also suggest entertainment like like

1, Boating

2,Canoeing

3,Kayaking

4,Rock Climbing

5,Sailing

6,Lake Beach

7,Lake Reservoir Restaurant/Lake Side Restaurant

8,Camping

9,Biking/Hiking with path&trails

10,Lodge

11,Souvenir Shop

12,Beach Side Bars or Clubs

13,Beach Side gas station

14,Beach Side car wash/garage

15,Casino

These are some of the things we can invest or do business for entertainment for Tour. In this sense, touring bring in a lot of money and income to family. This also help Laos with a less boring, but exciting entertainment for tourist to come again and again. Also this kind of business can be possible since China sell cheap manufacture good like kayak or a sort of Boat. And another ways to get these things can be in Thailand also. About the price for renting should not be too high or too cheap. It take time to gradually build up that price, so it would be better if price are reasonable for everyone and keep all the area for entertainment CLEAN as possible, which will tell tourist, wow this is the most clean and exciting place ever! We want to surprise them with a welcoming gesture, and to advertise more tourist to come to Laos. Also We going to have to build link or connection in the area of this exciting entertainment for those who wants to do business next door to you. Is all about building and linking our business together to bring more tourist into this one area of reservoir or Lake.

Laos should open a Energy save program like solar power within the country it self. Solar Power are cheap ways maybe for only Laos Local to use and other development. These Solar power can be constructed in a isolated area in a higher geographic longitude, because and also receive more day light hours from the sun raze.

In today world, Any Thirt-World countries can built Nuclear-Power Plan, All you need is '' Cash ,'' Ok. But number one problem for those who had, How you are going to maintain the waste??? and where are you going to stored it?? Even in the America today, U.S.congress still debated where are they gonna store all the Nuclear waste? because the Residences of NEVADA don't want to put all the waste in their home state.

There are no nuclear waste with the nuclear fusion and not to use the nuclear fission from the uranium . So build the plasma and use the hydrogen just like the sun power . Plasma turn the hydrogen to helium like the sun.

It depends on whom you are talking to. If  Laos would like to join WTO. Yes ,of course all of the members of the world community will say no to Laos. If Laos still would like to have the nuclear weapon, Lao leader would be insane instead of having food to feed  their people  just like north Korea let their people  staving to death.

True but then if we have nuclear weapons no one can kick us around.  With North Korea, with or without Nuclear weapons, they were go to starve anyway.

Wrong Vietnam is not the most powerful weapon. Vietnam is  scary  and afraid of China and NATO or US. So Laos couldn't depends on Vietnam any more. Before Vietnam won the war not because of the Vietnamese military but the world media and the press. Military , Vietnam could be white out of the earth by the Chinese and the American less than you could imagine. Only humanity and the media and the tactic that Vietnamese are good at for military and weapon not a chance . So it is nice for Laos to have nuclear bombs and intercontinental nuclear war head missiles.

Nuclear weapon is impossible for Laos to build because it is too expensive but Lao scientists could develop biological germ warfare that could infected and do the damage as much as nuclear weapons.

It' not impossible.  North Korea is poor, in fact they're so poor that millions of their citizens died of starvation and they still have nuclear weapons.  If not for their enemies, US, South Korea & Japan feeding them then more would have died.

In the last border war between China and Vietnam, not too long ago.  China was within the gate of Hanoi in 48 hours.

If the conflict ever happen again this time Vietnam could not ask the Russia for help any more. China have very modern , strong air force , Navy and army with very hi tech spy satellite  with large number of soldiers and a lot of money to crush Vietnam in matter of days.
