I think hamburger and fries are probably not good for babies either.
But adults can eat anything you want.
>>While many Lao believe sticky rice is the ideal baby food, health experts say just the opposite. Feeding the glutinous grain to babies can not only result in gastro-intestinal disorders and immune deficiencies but also contribute to malnutrition.....
Any food not good for infants or babies from 1 day till 6 months of their age bcz this time their digestion system not complete build yet esp. stomach. Good for them only mother milk
If sticky rice is not good for a new born..I think we have no Laos today as I belived all of you ate it before
Have you read the news? Why do you think Laos has high infant mortality rate? Why are there a lot of young babies having diarrhea? Dont you know mother's milk is the most nutritious and safe food for babies. It doesn't only provide nourishment but protection (Antibodies) as well. In the past there was a mention about the lack of safe and potable water in many rural areas in Laos. Mothers milk doesn't require water to prepare, it just comes out naturally and abundantly during the lactation period. Think twice and think carefully Lao girl. Someday you'll gonna be a mother, too. Who knows.
LAOS: Sticky rice harms newborns, say specialists Source: IRIN News
VILABOULY, 4 May 2010 (IRIN) - While many Lao believe sticky rice is the ideal baby food, health experts say just the opposite. Feeding the glutinous grain to babies can not only result in gastro-intestinal disorders and immune deficiencies but also contribute to malnutrition.
Traditionally, sticky rice, a primary staple in Laos, is offered to spirits and given daily to monks for Buddhist alms. Much of the country's culture, festivals and rituals centre on planting, harvesting and eating the rice.
According to research supported by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), sticky rice first chewed by the mother is fed to about 25 percent of infants within the first five months after delivery and for many, as early as the first week of life.
"In the most severe cases, women feed their infants sticky rice immediately after birth in rural areas of Savannakhet," Phouthong Ratanavong, of the National Centre of Mother and Child Health, told IRIN.
A 2007 article in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition stated that 5 percent of Lao children were never breastfed, and that inadequate breastfeeding contributed to high rates of malnutrition and infant mortality.
"Early complementary food may reduce or terminate their breast-milk intake, may be a source of microbial contamination and interfere in the absorption of essential micronutrients such as iron and zinc," it stated.
Breastfeeding campaign
In a bid to counter this, the Lao government, with the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) [http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/laopdr.html] and other international agencies, in September 2009 launched an exclusive breastfeeding campaign.
Exclusive breastfeeding of infants for the first six months prevents infection, provides ample nutrition, and is economical, according to UNICEF.
However, only 26 percent of Lao babies younger than six months are exclusively breastfed, while 70 percent of six- to nine-months old are breastfed with complementary food, the agency says.
"We're reminding mothers that adding anything else to their children's diet - formula, rice, juice, even water - is unnecessary and can be dangerous," said Khamseng Philavong, a pediatrician at the National Centre of Mother and Child Health, the implementing partner with UNICEF for the campaign.
The campaign targeted 3,000 village-level volunteer "breast milk messengers", who then pass on the messages to other villagers.
Building awareness
"More efforts should be made to build awareness among the village elders. The mother of the newborn cannot say no to family elders feeding their infants sticky rice," said Khamseng.
Lai, holding her newborn in the Vilabouly District Hospital in Savannakhet Province, has delivered five children, but one died very soon after birth and another passed away at about three months. She does not link their deaths to feeding them sticky rice.
"We'll go home soon so he can eat sticky rice," Lai said. "He can have breast milk, too, but if he's really hungry, he needs to eat rice. It helps him sleep."
Lai considers breastfeeding important, but she and her mother, Bounyong, say it does not provide adequate nourishment. "I encourage my children to feed their children rice if they're hungry," Bounyong said.
According to the UN Development Programme [http://www.undplao.org/mdgs/mdgs1.php], 37 percent of Lao children under five are underweight. Chronic malnutrition, or stunting, affects 40 percent of children under five.
The Lao Ministry of Health, however, says that overall malnutrition rates are improving - from 405 out of 100,000 people reportedly malnourished in 2005, down to 300 per 100,000 in 2010.
you are right, Khonthakhek, it is neither not good for lunch 'cos it always makes you asleep and lazy to finish your work...or not before having a siesta or a short nap that is a lost of time that might be the reason why we are so low in making progress comparing to the other neighbouring countries
You guys are listening, reading too much with news and internet related stuffs. First of, how many Laotian families can afford to buy milk or baby foods for their kids. Second, Laos is one of the poorest country in the world. Sticky rice is the main part of our meal, easily available for everyone in Laos and it's affordable. Would you rather starve your kid just because you can't afford anything else? Do your own judgment and stop listening to others. Just like western medicine, it always have good and bad reaction to it.

yeah!!! thats why lao people must take a nap after lunch, dont you think so?? anyway, I eat stricky rice when i feel like, sometimes at the midnight hehe..
If, you are feeding your newborns sticky rice then you should think twice about having a child....I don't have any of my own but, i took care of my younger siblings...this is how my mom does it , raising all 11 of us.
soak the rice first "NOT STICKY RICE THE REGULAR RICE" Dried out in the sun grounded up until almost power consistancy. (you can make enough to last at least 3-4 weeks..Thats how we did it) when ready to feed the baby boil water until boiling point add a few spoons of dried rice powder stir consistantly until transparent add riped banana and smash until the same consistancy.
let it cool down first before feed the baby...
My mom never chew the rice to feed her kids and I think thats great although i see people do that all the times.

Hi my Darling. That is a very nice tip you shared with our colleagues here. I hope it reaches those mothers in the rural areas who have misconceptions on proper newborn and infant feeding. As an expert on this field I agree with your baby food preparation that is one of the ways. You can even add some squash and other similar ground veggies to make it more nutritious. You can even use ordinary rice without drying it under the sun. You just have to cook it well, like letting it boil until it becomes porridge; thinly sliced veggies can be added while its being cooked so they will also become soft enough. BUT THIS FOOD CAN BE GIVEN ONLY WHEN THE BABY REACHED 6 MONTHS AND ABOVE.
MOTHER'S MILK REMAINS THE BEST FOOD FOR BABIES BELOW 6 MONTHS OLD. Mothers may also maintain breasfeeding the baby for up to 2 years of age while simultaneously giving solid foods at >6 months. Keen mother's should notice that the babies teeth start to erupt at 6 months. one or two teeth may appear at 4 moths but notice the size is too tiny to be used for chewing. This is an indication that babies younger than 6 months shouldn't be feed with solid foods yet.
Please folks re-read the news. It cautions about newborns ( 1 day to 28 days) and babies below 6 months old being fed with sticky rice. Glutious rice are more difficult to digest than ordinary rice. Does anyone of you know that the size of a babies stomach is only about the size of a ordinary bean? Thus, a few suckling of milk is enough for each feeding. Too much may cause indigestion and other gastric problems.
I hope you guys take this caution seriously. Its not to criticize the fondness of Lao for sticky rice. I personally like it too!. I eat it during lunch and dinner almost eveyday.
Breastmilk is best for baby for up to 2 years og age.
Exclusive breasfeeding is recommended to babies less than 6 months old.
properly prepared solid foods may be introuduced to babies 6 months old and above.
Infant formula should be avoided as it increases babies' risk for infection, such as diarrhea... it doesnt contain antibodies and doesn't come in cheap and abundantly than breast milk. Breastmilk doesn't require preparation and need to get up at night, boil water, shake bottles, and clean them afterwards.
BEST OF ALL, breastfeeding forms a lasting bond between mothers and babies!!!
The best food on earth for new born up to 4 months is breast milk and the reason why I said up to 4 months is not all babies start on solid baby food at 6 months, it depends on individuals, your baby's obstetritain will let you know if your baby is ready for solid or not at starting 4 months.
Even though your baby is taking solid food, you should still continue breast feed your baby until your baby reaches 2 years old.
Adult's saliva is very dangerous to baby / todler. Please do not chew food and then feed to your baby or todler # it leads to gum disease and tooth decay # do encourage your baby who's teething chew their own food , starting with soft food either mashed or cut into a small bite no larger than around their pinky to prevent choking hazard. se This will encourage strong bone for their jaw and steamulate the growth of their brain.
I'm pretty much against feed sticky rice to children who's under 2 yr old. Stick rice takes longer to digest.

Sabaidee everyone!
as you all know almost all in Lao they would feed their babies breasth milk until they talk, walk and even some of them already going to school....this is the truth.
some people go on to say sticky rice is even bad for grown up i do not agree at all, its depends on your diet... our family always have SOUP and Vegetables with all our meals and most the deserts are almost always fruits....most fruits would help digest/break down especially pineapple.

Nangdarling
Wow Nangdarling, you are maintaining a healthy diet. I imagine you must have a nice bod and pretty as well.

These two comments are so ignorance. Productivity has less corrleation with taking nap in the afternoon. French and many weathfare european states' workers are as productive as their american counterparts. In fact, those crosss-country skiing fanatics, Norwegians, are the most productive when productivity per hour work is analysed. Americans are productive but they ususally work longer. Long working hours is not necessary good for workers because fatigue increase accidents and fatality. Each year, over 5000 U.S. workers die on the job while the U.K. has less than 200 deaths per year.

I totally agree but, both sticky rice and regular rice is equally and readily available.
