I heard that Laos plan to build around 60 dams across the country by 2020. Do you  think it is appropriate, or it is too much?

Why many civilized countries like in Japan and Korea, they stop building dam a decade ago, but Laos just start?

Because they are already developed ...
It is good things to build dam as long as it generate foreign currency for Laos...

actually, they landlocked countries in Europe have done the samething.

that's an ambitious plan.
it would require lot of foreign money.
and the power of foreign money is very seductive and desiring.

the need to develop vs the method of getting us there without destroying
ppl's way of life.

i think sometimes too many may be too much, esp. for ppl who are concerned about
the environment and those citing that there is no precedent for so many dams in the makong river region.confuse

I personally disagree with whoever come up with the____ idea to build more hydroelectric power plan in Laos.   I think 60 are too many already.  Take a close at Laos is not a big-wide country.  It is such a small portion of land that the laotian people enjoy doing their living for many generations.  Think this way, how many thousands villages need to be relocated when one dam is being built.  This kind of action is jeopadizing the living of the laotian people.  Instead of getting better, I believe the more dams are built, the more people will suffer.  Soon Laos will have no lands for farming,  all forests will be destroyed,  all the animals will become endanger.  For instance, do all the laotian people benefit from building these dams?

if work in the environmental protection office, i wouldn't agree with Lao govt, why does govt allow and signed many dam projects in Laos? as far as Ministry of investment and planing or Ministry of mining, electricity and energy are concerned , Laos need to get out of poverty and utilize the natural resources is only way to develop and attract the foreign investment.

I hope that, 60dams will be able to provide a better living of Lao people ,but not enrich Mr and mrs in the government.
