Lao Youth Culture seems to be a mixture of Bangkok Pop Culure/Hip Hop Slang/Korean Hair Dos.  Look at how youth behave in BKK and it's mirrored in VTE.  Dudes sound like girls and girls behave like guys.

Feel Free to add on.

It's because Thailand has great cultural influence on Laos.  Not just the young but older people too.  Nothing original comes out of Laos.  Not talking down, just talking sense.

Traditionally Lao men were supposed to be manly men and handy/smart.  That's how Lao men were able to take care of their families in olden days.

Now Lao men spend as much time in the hair salon as women do.

Just look around and you'll see that Lao men have become more effeminate over there years to varying degrees.  Guys don't want to break a nail.

Most young Lao, the poorer ones anyway, are working in Thailand anyways.  So of course they are going to pick up cultural influences from the Thais and Korean influence also by way of the Thais.  Those still in Laos just watch too much Lakorn and visit Thailand often.  Since Thailand is a bit more prosperous, they see the Thai way as the right way.  Even though there's good and bad that comes along with it.  Lao people don't know how to take in the good and discard the bad.  They take it all in.  It's a result of being closed off for so long and being a bit naive.

Anything from Muang Nok is seen as cool among Lao people.  It isn't just Thai stuff.  Lao people are mad for all things Western, Japanese, Korean is seen as hip/cool among Lao people in general.  Even stuff that is completely stupid.  There's no differentiation.  It does have to do with being closed off for so long as said.  But it also has to do with being a less developed nation and looking up to more developed nation.  Laos and Lao people wants everything NOW!  It's a big difference from a country that's stayed open, developed over time, and mixed modernization with their own cultures.

The Lao PDR said last year South Korea should be a model for Laos.  But go to South Korea and see how hard those youngsters study, work, and their discipline.  There's time to work and time to relax.  Lao youth have too much time to relax.  Even at work Lao people go comfortably late and just go on facebook, instagram, youtube all day.

Laos doesn't need to be like anyone.  They just need a better work ethic and they'll be fine.  ASEAN is right around the corner.

I don't like how Lao youngsters and Lao people get so ****y once they've had some sort of education.  Everyone thinks they're a know-it-all.  It's quite annoying.  Some of the biggest douches in that regard reside in Laos.  In more developed places, education is so common, it is not used to look down on others.  You don't even know who's had higher education and who hasn't.  But in Laos everyone likes to brag about how about how smart, modern, and worldly they are.  If they were really all those things they wouldn't need to brag about it.

It's a byproduct of not having any good role models to look up to.  Most places have a mixture of good and bad role models.  Laos is full of the latter.

Can I first just say how moronic this post is?

Lao norks support globalization, yet they are complaining Lao youth are losing their culture and liking others too much. hmm Where is the sense in that? Any nation that falls under globalization will lose their native culture slowly but surely.

The only solution to this is to become a complete hermit. aka North Korea. The youth will never get a chance to absorb any terrible outside cultures.

Obviously you don't live in today. People with higher education certainly do act superior to others. This has got to be one of the most rediculous statements I have ever seen. The neoliberal out of control capitalist world loves to stratisfy society and education is certainly one of those things to use.

PS education is not that common for Lao in America. I have left the data here, but only 50% or so of Lao Americans graduate high school and a much lower amount for college graduation.
