Logging in Laos

Thongsing was asked recently about logging in Laos.  He said he's been working on it for 20 years.  How can he be working on it when he's been participating in it.  I guess he forgot.

Rich Lao people own multiple businesses but still rely on the good ol' logs to pay for their high priced lifestyles.

Here's a well known woman in VTE that owns multiple businesses she started with her share of the logging profits.

Again she's one of many who've got their start in the "logging industry" and reinvested their shares in other businesses.  No coincidence they all are related to the Pak Lat.

We're talking about Laos as this is a Lao forum.  If you want to go off topic, make your own topic!

Interesting how a woman in Vientiane has claim to all those logs in Saravan when the local villagers aren't even allowed to get a couple of logs to build a stilt home.

Same thing with Northern Laos.

She has no shame.  But she's just one of many.

Thousands of log trucks leave Laos on a daily basis.  They don't even bother to cover the log trucks like they used to.

These photos are posted and reposted all over the place by people within Laos.  You don't need to add this lady.

She should enjoy her weekly Bangkok shopping sprees and exotic European cars now because she and the rest of her kind will find themselves living in a new kind of accommodation soon.  The Villagers in Northern Laos are not happy at all with all this logging.  I'm sure it's the same in the South where those photos were taken.  The log trucks get cursed at daily by local Lao villagers.

The logging will eventually slow down because a lot of provinces are running out.  Saravan is almost empty of trees now thanks to people like this lady.

not to mention the killing of the Native Americansno

http://www.saveamericasforests.org/resources/Destruction.htm

Decades of Rampant Clearcutting in Our National Forests Is Ruining America's Last Wild Forests.

But a new bill in the U.S. Congress, the Act to Save America's Forests, would protect and restore these national treasures.

America was once covered with one billion acres of towering primeval forests.   These forests were teeming with plants and animals, a treasure-trove of evolutionary diversity and biological richness. Giant, centuries-old trees had trunks more than 15 feet wide and soared to the height of 30 story skyscrapers.

In the past 500 years, aggressive logging and development have destroyed over 95% of these original forests. The last remnants of America's virgin and natural forests, with their unique and irreplaceable life, reside mostly on our national forests. The 155 national forests cover a large portion of our country, an area about the size of California Oregon and Washington combined, and stretch from Alaska to Florida. Most states have at least one national forest.

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mblowers/def.htmlDeforestation in the U.S.

A few months back, I was waiting in line at a small store that often tunes its radio in to the Rush Limbaugh show. That being of those occasions, I heard Mr. Limbaugh assert that not only is excessive logging not a problem, but that in fact, the United States has more trees now than it did 300 years ago! He then fielded several calls from listeners who agreed that this was technically true, but wanted to point out that many of those trees would have to be seedlings in replanted clearcuts and therefore Mr. Limbaugh's statement was misleading. Well, I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that Rush was not only misleading, he was also making it up. The present total forested acreage in the United States represents only a fraction of the total in the 17th century, requiring that most of the present acreage be densely covered by extremely young trees in order for Rush's statement to hold true. The difference between current forests and their predecessors becomes even starker when one compares old growth acreage, an important indicator of not only forest health. Consider the following maps:

Minerals

Historically, the U.S. government identified sources of materials in Third World countries, and then encouraged U.S. corporations to invest in and facilitate their production. Dating back to the mid-1960s, the U.S. government literally installed the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko, which gave U.S. corporations access to the Congo’s minerals for more than 30 years. However, over the years Mobutu began to limit access by Western corporations, and to control the distribution of resources. In 1998, U.S. military-trained leaders of Rwanda and Uganda invaded the mineral-rich areas of the Congo. The invaders installed illegal colonial-style governments which continue to receive millions of dollars in arms and military training from the United States. Our government and a $5 million Citibank loan maintains the rebel presence in the Congo. Their control of mineral rich areas allows western corporations, such as American Mineral Fields, to illegally mine. Rwandan and Ugandan control over this area is beneficial for both governments and for the corporations that continue to exploit the Congo’s natural wealth.

American Mineral Fields (AMF) landed exclusive exploration rights to an estimated 1.4 million tons of copper and 270,000 tons of cobalt. San Francisco based engineering firm Bechtel Inc. established strong ties in the rebel zones as well. Bechtel drew up an inventory of the Congo’s mineral resources free of charge, and also paid for NASA satellite studies of the country for infared maps of its minerals. Bechtel estimates that the DRC’s mineral ores alone are worth $157 billion dollars. Through coltan production, the Rwandans and their allies are bringing in $20 million revenue a month. Rwanda’s diamond exports went from 166 carats in 1998 to 30,500 in 2000. Uganda’s diamond exports jumped from approximately 1,500 carats to about 11,300. The final destination for many of these minerals is the U.S.

Nope if I had my way they would all be arrested and wealth be redistributed among the people. But beside my point, corruption exists everywhere. You Lao nork don't understand because America exports its corruption. America has had years of stealing from other nations brown and black people to build up it's resources. You can't deny America's treacherous behavior as a world policeman, so that is why you are so right wing and unstable in your analysis.  You can't believe for one second your white father is such a scum and thief.

That's a well known Viet/Lao family.  Besides shopping that lady and her sister use that log money on Bangkok gigolos.  She's always running around with different young Thai men.  Rich single Lao not unlike rich Thai women like to use the service of Thai gigolos.  She owns a very well known business in Vientiane.

It's unbelievable how some people are making excuses for the logging in Laos.  Some people even say logging in Laos is necessary because Laos needs land for rubber farming.  Really?????  And who is doing most of this rubber farming?  Not Lao people.  A whole other issue is the land issues.  Poor farmers are being left landless all over Southern Laos.  People who have farmed their lands for generations are being stripped dry.
