Chinese shopping mall to open in August

New Lao-China shopping mall postponed from April is set to open on August 1, according to the SanJiang Company yesterday.

“We promised customers that we would open the SanJiang Shopping Mall in the middle of April before Lao New Year, but finally we had to move the date to August because we had to rebuild some rooms for Chinese businesses who rent our rooms,” the SanJiang Company President, Mr Ding Gou Jiang, said.

About 100 rooms were designed by Chinese businesses that rent rooms in the shopping mall and then constructed so that the design matched their products.

“More than 60 rooms were designed by us and they are for Lao businesses,” Mr Ding Gou Jiang explained.

Construction on the SanJiang Shoppimg Mall began in September last year and the company expected to complete the project in April, but this was later postponed to August this year.

The shopping mall will target the Chinese market in Vientiane , and most of the products sold there will be imported from China , including both quality and low-priced goods.

The SanJiang Company invested about 57 billion kip (US$6 million) in the initial construction at Oubmoung Neua village in Sikhottabong district, Vientiane .

“The project has three phases. The first is building the best shopping mall in Vientiane . The second phase will invest another about 57 billion kip (US$6 million) in hotel construction in the same area and the third phase will invest another 57 billion kip (US$6 million) for an office building,” Mr Jiang said.

“A large-scale project such as this highlights the long-standing cooperative relationship between Laos and China ,” Mr Jiang explained.

The company also reported that the centre would facilitate customer parking, with a parking lot for 800 cars and 5,000 motorbikes. Mr Jiang's experience is that most markets around Vientiane don't have enough parking.

“Many markets in Vientiane have this problem, but they are unable to do anything about it because they don't have any space to build more car parks. This centre will be very convenient for customers to use,” he said.
