(KPL) A new magazine Sao Lao has been launched as part of a campaign to promote Lao women’s major role in culture, tradition and code of dressing.
Lao Women’s Union in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Culture launched a new Sao Lao Magazine yesterday in Vientiane. The launch was witnessed by Mrs. Sisay Leudethmounsone, President of the Lao Women’s Union, Mr Somsanouk Mixay, Deputy-President of the Lao Journalists’ Association as well as concerned officials.
The LWU management hoped that the Sao Lao Magazine will publicise the roles of Lao women and to infuse them into the minds of the public. It will also publishes Lao women’s advancement and provides useful information on the study of Lao culture and the lifestyle of Lao people.
Mrs. Sisay, LWU President, said that the establishment of the Sao Lao Magazine marked a milestone in the constant growth of women media. Since 1975 the Lao media has been a sharp tool for promoting the government’s guideline to local people.
Now there are more than 10 magazines in the Lao PDR including Mahason, Update, Sayo, Target, Khuanchai, Classify, Lao Culture, Meuang Lao, Discovery and Sao Lao.
However among these magazines, some have not provided sufficient useful information to general readers. In particular their content focuses mainly on business and not much on general interests, said a reader who wants to be anonymous.
Why not promote women's role in business, leadership and education? Why it always gotta be clothes and tradition? Women have more to offer than this. It is a backward policy.
I do agree that there are too many lao magazine about Lao girls and all of the magazine are very similar. For example, fashion, health tips, interview, etc....
I wonder if there will have another kind of magazine that really useful for our people
Like magazines about old Lao women, Middle aged Lao women and young and very young Lao women. I suggest they should publish the magazines about Lao women in every profession and status. e.g. about Lao women farmers and Lao women laborers, traders and so on so forth.
We need current affairs magazine. Magazine that discusses politics and economic and social issues. Magazine that encourages debate and criticism. But all we got is magazines are just about pretty images.
