Shocked...Poverty right in front of me

We have now been in Laos 6 months and as yet I have not really seen anything that has shocked me. Not even the fried bats worried me. But today I had my first shock.

As I was walking home from Z's school. I saw a dog lazing on a battered old porch (if that is what it could be called). I was thinking about how poor the people that lived here must be, when I looked over and saw a lady standing over a 44 gallon drum with a fire lit in it. She was standing holding the back legs of a dog and 'spit-roasting' its head.

I was shocked, it was the first time poverty has real hit me slap in the face. I probably need a few more shocks like this to get me to appreciate how easy I have got it.

South Korea is not a poor country, but believe me right in Seoul there is a section of the city have, restaurants and shops selling DOG MEAT, from ROAST to BARBECUE and other dishes. You can verify this information with the korean for yourself. It is true. People who like to eat dog meat saying that it makes you feel warm and give you a lot of heat during cold wheather.....some even believe that meat dog gives you a lot of energy for sex.....APHRODESIA.
Of course not all korean, or chinese or vietnamese or lao eat meat dog.....some who are in some sort....meat dog taste good or APHRODESIA.

Europeans seem to think that everything that happens outside of Europe or America that isn't a recognised Anglo-American practice, is shocking. Curse the empire for its blindness and the idiocy of its citizens.

they can get shock because thier are still inocense with the world. Many people in many countries arround the world eat dogs. Some contries, religious, ethnic groups..not eat cows, pigs...it's just a different way of thinking. Not because of poorverty then people eat dogs even in Vietnam eat dogs can be cosidered as food culture: there are how to cook, how to eat, when to eat that can be good or bad for you...( Van hoa am thuc: co day du cach che bien, cach an, thoi gian an gan lien voi nhung y nghia nhat dinh)

Europeans, falang are different conception of DOG like a friends, it's normal that they will be shocked when sho know that people eat dog.

I don't eat dog but, I see in French TV : Pekin Express. Candidat must to going to Pekin, Paris-Pekin, without trains or planes etc ... just to stick a "parcours". So, they are in Pekin and need to eat. They entered in restaurant (writting DOG in chinese words) and they say : Humm .. it's very good, I don't know what is it but veryy nice.

After, when they are finish, they see ... a dog ... and they are shocked too. :p

Most Lao people learn how to eat dog from their Vietnamese or Chinese counterpart. Lao people don't use to eat dog, but after the Communist took over that when thing started to change. It's not poor people that eat dog, but the people that have some money. If you go to any Lao villages, they're many dogs but the people don't eat them. It's not a norm or Lao culture to eat dogs. The people that eat dog have said that it tastes good, simple as that. I myself don't eat it and never will beacause I've had dogs around me when I was a kid.

Certain segment of the population in Laos did eat dog prior to the liberation. Eating dog in Laos it is certainly not a new practices. There was a famous Noodle Soup restaurant in Vientiane that was famouse for its dog menu and was very popular with the former RLG elites and officials at the time. According to one of my uncle whom was a former High Ranking Officer in the Royal Lao Air Force.

LPA,

We have to disagree on this. Don't you mean ....prior to the betrayal? I said BETRAYAL because RLG allowed Pathet Lao to join the government. RLG was just too naive about Pathet Lao intention. BUT that is history now.

I just wondering how your uncle felt about your undying support of Lao People Democratic Party. It would be interesting story.

Lan xang,

The first Betrayal of the Lao Nation by the  Rightists was in 1958. During the May 4, 1958 National Assembly Elections, the Neo Lao Hak Sat and their political Allies won 13 of the 21 seats in contention. Unfortunately it take the Pathet Lao 30 years of struggle to reclaimed the victory and liberated the Country from the American Interventionist and their Lao lackeys.

My Uncle was very receptive of the Revolutionary Forces as he was so fed up the blatant corruption of the RLG. The only thing that kept him from joining the Revolutionary Forces was his love for flying and his sense of duty. He voluteered to go to Seminar in Samnua rather than flee the Country like a coward. For these reasons I will forever place him in the highest esteem.

As a High Ranking RLAF Officer, he could have easily fled the Country like the rest of those shameless RLG Officials, but he chose to stayed behind and accept his fate with full dignity.

Some people are just ignorant because they have live in such comfort that they only learn to eat genetically modified food (or maybe just my exageration).. so everything else other than what they commonly see in the grocery or market, they consider exotic of disgusting. But in Asia, as unique as we are, in almost any asian countries you will find people eating not only dogs but other animals or insect that you can imagine, those normally not found on the table of families in europe or in the americas.  This practice is maybe as part of a certain ritual, culture or out of hunger/ poverty. But people who do this should not be judged right away as barbaric or uncivilized. Its just their way of life..... Besides if your stomach is already hurting and there is nothing else available, you would probably dare eat it too.

I myself dont eat dog or agree to eating dogs, but Ive tasted it and its not that bad. Ive known some people who eat dog, and luckily they dont turn into warevolves at night! (just kidding!)

This kind of individual and cultural differences is what add up spice to our lives.

Dog meat is very, very OISHI (delicious). I try to find it in Japan, but never found one. The dog is too expensive in Japan. I found a simple, medium size dog in a store costs 35,000 Yen (3,000,000 kip/ 300 US$).
I will go to grilled dog store once I return home in July haha....

(Enu wa oishi desu)................

I read very good answer of LPA to Lan Xang, it certainly tells the truth about Lao's history and that's what I saw in document like Cambodia to Kampuchia somehow has a part of this document (about 3 hours) telling about Lao's history....it tells you how the french first arrived to Laos and what did the french think about Laos and how they took Laos....not only the rightist of Laos at that time betrayed the country but they also arrested Souphanouvong and jailed him.....(It does not make sense when you won the election and ended up in jail) so perhaps justice prevailed in Lao.

Eating dog is just like any other thing, but let have a look around and we will see, some regarded COW is GOD and don't eat BEEF, some see DOG as dirty animal like ISLAM people some believe DOG is our friend like Western people so you see the opposit thing here Islam people believe dog is dirty animal, western people see dog as friend....some see MONKEY also as GOD...and some don't eat PORK...but as I know people who like eating dog because they believe it gives them SEXUAL URGE it said when you eat dog it make your PENIS erect easily so no need for expensive VIAGRA...so it like after eating dog meat you will serve your woman well....give her a good F...there you are what ever you believe and the way you see thing. ISLAM people regarde dog is a dirty animal, western people love them and see them as a friend....you see now how so different that we human being seeing thing.

Just because they live in America that does not mean they all speak only English here?
As a mater of fact the U.S government encourages people not to forget how to speak  their mother's tongue language.

For example my parents have a rule for us, in my house hold we only speak Lao or Laotian to one another.

Laos is agriculture and Buddhist country and also Lao people have never been starved to death in history of Laos. Lao people should never eat dogs. Dogs are not animal to breed for food. Dogs are the man best friend and very intelligent animals. In the first world countries they use the dos to help the handicap people such blind people and disable people, searching dogs for earth quake victim,  find bombs and drug and police dogs as well. Even the people in the most starving country in Africa still don't eat dogs. Laos is civilize nation and Buddhist country with high value of honor and culture so it should be illegal to eat dog in Laos.

Wherever there are Vietnamese influence just like Sakonnakorn where there are Vietnamese in Thailand  and also in Laos , the people are eating dogs. Pure blood Thai and Lao people who are truly Buddhist are not eating dogs.
