Youths to show Lao culture under Southeast Asia Youth Ship Programme
(KPL) Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union last week organised an art performance in preparation for Southeast Asian Youth Ship Programme held in Japan in this October.
The performance by the 29 young people at the National Culture Hall included traditional dances and games representing the traditions and cultures of Lao ethnic people.
The ship programme has been designed to encourage friendship and understanding between the youths of Japan and ASEAN member countries. “We are so proud to present our show to the public before we join the programme, we have spent several months for the preparation,” said Deputy Director of the Mass Media Department of Lao Youth Union, Ms Douangsaly Sivilay.
“The activities of the programmed held in Japan will be attended by young people from 10 ASEAN countries, who will have a meeting to discuss their respective cultures,” said Ms Douangsaly.
Laos became a member of the programme in 1998, our young people have benefited from this programme,” she said.
The Southeast Asian Youth Ship Programme started in January 1974 following an agreement between Japan and the five ASEAN foundation member countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei joined the programme in 1985, Vietnam in 1996, Laos and Myanmar in 1998.
Cambodia joined the programme in 2000.
The 2007 activities of the programme are scheduled to run from October 22 to December 12 this year, during which, the youth representatives of member countries will visit Japan and five ASEAN member countries; Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Laos.
