Vietnam to build BIG BIG dam in Luang Prabang world heritage !

HANOI, Oct 17 (Reuters) - State oil group Petrovietnam has signed an agreement with Laos to invest $1.7 billion in a hydro power plant in Luang Prabang, company officials said on Wednesday.

The 1,410-megawatt (MW) power plant will be under build-operate-transfer investment terms, they said, but declined to provide a timeline for the construction of the project.

A host of Vietnamese companies have sought to build hydro power plants in the neighbouring country to export electricity to meet soaring demand in Vietnam.

hum.. i hope it won't be not close to the city!!!! Mountins around luang prabang are so beautifull.. i hope they won't change this for a giant cement wall

If it's far from the city and if everythng is done to compensate the negative effects of the dam onto local people and nature, that's ok.... but how can we know?

Yes, it's understandable. Our foes do not want it. They know very well that the dams will generate revenue for Lao people. They don't want Laos become rich. What they want is Laos remains poor.

Otherwise, they have no pretex to blame our government. Just let them talk rubbish. No where enemy would want good rather than harm for us.

I WANT LAOS TO BECOME RICHER, but I DON'T WANT LAOS TO ACCEPT LOOSING ALL ITS CURRENT VALUE (culture, preserved environment-that local people just need to live-, human and religious values, some very important aspects of social organization, ethnic diversity) JUST TO GET MORE MONEY!

How can some people dream that more money will solve all their problems, especialy if they don't want to think about all aspects of development?

paris_vientiane,

You can not debate with people like that. All they see is $$$$$$. It is covering their eyes. They don't see pass that. You see first thing coming out of his/her mouth is "rich and poor". Nothing about environment. This is great example of majority of Lao. They always want to be just as good or better than their neighbors and friends.
