KPL — THE National Institute of Cultural

Research, and the Ministry of Information and

Culture in collaboration with intellectuals,

writers and authors held a symposium on the

historical bravery and background of King

Anouvong of Laos on  14 and 15.

The two day event, chaired by Mr

Phandouangchit Vongsa, Minister of

Information and Culture, aimed to inform the

participants on the situation of the Lane Xang

Kingdom during the period of 1779-1828. Laos

became a colony of Siam (Thailand) from 1779-

1878, during which time the Lao people met with

incredible suffering.

King Anouvong decided to stop this

injustice and led his people in against the

Siamese only to see the Siamese army burn

Vientiane in 1827.

The symposium also reminded the

Lao people of the reasons for the defeat of

King Anouvong, the reason for the ill-treatment

of Laos by the Siamese and the reason

why King Anouvong is praised as a national

hero and will be respected forever by the Lao

people.

Ya Mo may or may not have been a part of

this history. Those who attempt to place Ya

Mo into this history are turning something

obviously subjective into an objective fact.

This is something it can never be.

What the Lao Gov. has said, it is correct.
King Anou is Hero of Laos.
Ya Mo is Hero of Thailand.
How could Thai T.V. make the movie (history of Ya Mo or "...") without relating to the Lao history especially history of King Anou?
That is something impossible.
That is very big problem between two countries if the movie was built.

Effect:
Generally, movie is distributed all around the world. So that, the audiences will understand according to the movie said because before the movie was built, it must be passed the agreement of the concerning countries. People around the world will think, know and remember, who Ya Mo is and who the Lao is, following the movie.
the best way is they must stop making the movie.

I strongly hope that Lao Gov. will strongly disagree for making the movie.

thank you.

To the negative commentor please have some respect for us Laotiane people.  This movie is about history of the Siamese and Laotiane people.  When you make a history movie of course it is going be controversy for both nations.  Please be more compassion and have respect for one aother.  If this movie was to be made it will cause a great deal of pain and suffering for both nations.

This controversy movie involved our Lao king Chao Anouvong.  Our hero king who suffer so much to free his people from slavery that the Siamese king imposed on them.

We Laotiane did not rudely disrespect your Thai Siamese king and you should do the same.  I know you are not Laotiane but you are Siamese person with such a hateful comment like that you could not be a Laotiane and if you are that is such a shame.

It would take another individual like king Chao Anouvong to unite Lao Nai and Lao Nork. We might disagree on the current politic of Laos but we both agree that Siam causes so much suffering to Lao people. They tried to erase our history by burning everything, destroying or taking everything back to Siam, and moved the entire population to Siam territory. Even tried to hide Laos (Lan Xang) history by not putting it in their history book. They even implement the Thai language so all Lao Isan can stop speaking Lao. Fortunately for now, Isan people still speak Lao. This fact will burn into the heart of every Lao person till the end of time.

What I like to know is when the word THAI came into existence. There were no THAI people before.
It is not like French, German or British. It is like Mexican, Canadian, American or Australian. They are a made up name to label all people from various ethnicities. It explain why the Thais (Siamese) keep coming out with this PATRIOTIC film so they can convince various ethnic in Thailand to think they are Thai.

As far as the movie goes, I say they should go ahead release their movie. I like to see it so I can better comment on it.

Too much rambling. I hope I make sense. I am too sleepy.

Its a MOVIE! Do you understand "M-O-V-I-E" - film - in other words it is not HISTORICAL FACT, it is just a story. If people want to make a movie and call it history they can do so. Who cares what happened 200 years ago. Nobody can tell what is truth and what is fantasy. Laos lies about its history just as much as Thailand does.

Dear all,

Please let me share my thought about this topic which I regard as really interesting and important to Lao people.
I cannot imagine how we can unite with Lao people in Thailand. They are Thai citizen. That's why I have no idea. So, I think the only way we can do is to share our Lao culture, language, and keep a good relationship between us.

However, some Lao people holding foreign passports still try to do bad to Laos. Like they are really keen to serve foreign contries or foreign governments to destroy Laos, let say Vangpao for example. This kind of things I must say is not available only present time, it appeared long time ago, say for example Nang Mo served Thai occupants to kill Lao soldiers in Khorat by putting a poison stuff into the food and water. As a result, Chao Anouvong was defeated the war for independent of Lanexang Kingdom.

To some extent, I really appreciate Chinese people bahavior. They always can keep their own culture no matter how far from China. They have their own schools, keep talking in Chinese and the like. Some foreign Chinese now come back to China to do businesses which also help China to grow. And more importantly, they never forget that they are Chinese people, Chinese race.

Talking about Thai nature, as we know they always want to take an advantage over Laos. They could and can do everything as long as they gain more benefit from us. Not so long ago, Thai Prime Minister accepted that it was not good to change history of Southern three provinces where now war is going on. The three provinces, previously Patany Kingdom, were occupied by Siam like they did to Lanexang Kingdom. But based on Thai history, the three provinces were part of Thailand since first century. That is why there is a war, war for their independent.

Fortunately, in Eesan there is not like that. I also understand that Lao nature (Eesan nature) is peaceful. Lao race people always love peace and stay calm. They are Buddhists like Lao people in Laos do. They love peace and cooperation, but not confrontation. We are not the kind of Buddhists in Burma or Myanmar if you like.

That's what I want to say in this topic, and of course,it's my opinion. Better way which Lao and Thailand can do is to carry out cooperation. No need to mention the bad history between us and definitely Lao people neither in Laos nor in Eesan would not need and hear the bad history. It was and is salty for Lao people around the world.

Regards,
.........

To the person who make a comment that h/s does not care and said it is just movie?  It is just a another movie to you, but the story about Yo Mo is an insult to all the Laotiane People.

Only a stone or an animal would not care about anything, but we human have care for other person feeling.  A good person and a caring person would care for other well being even if is does not make sense to us.

The Siamese is still continuing to add a salt to our wound one afer other and incident after incident; they just plain cold heart snake.

I can't imagine the Siamese is thinking about making a movie on fake heroine named "Ya Moh". I've read Chao Anouvong history and it touches my heart dearly. I'm in tear just reading about how Siamese torture him and killed his families, even little child the Siamese didn't even spare. The branding of Lao people, the slavery. How barbaric is the Siamese? The Siamese are animals. Ya Moh is a made up story, there is no such evidence to proof is. Don't read the history written by the Siamese when it comes to Laos, they will never write the truth. They took all the important documents away when they burnt Wiang Chan. Even Maha Sila Viravong books are base on some Siamese authors. Do read a book that written by a third person like Martin Stuart Fox who would take neutral stand on the history about Lao and Siamese. The person that said "it just a movie" , he/she needs to learn more about Chao Anouvong's history. 200 years isn't that long when you think about this, you can't forget about it. The story of Chao Anouvong and the suffering of Lao people in the hand of Siamese will never go away from my heart and soul. I will pass on to my children, they will read about it. Again, would an experience commander like Chao Anouvong who have defeated the Burmese from invading Siam allow his soldiers to fall for women and alcohol in the war time. Come on now, only the child would listen to that.

Lao Nok are the overseas Lao people. They are there for many reason one being they disagree with the current regime. Just because they are oversea does not mean they are Lao. Lao people in Esan are Lao. They are not Esan or Thai. They are Lao. Lao in Yunan, China (Sipsongpan Na) are Lao even though. They are not Chinese. Lao in France, America, Australia are still Lao. It is people like you with that attitude no wonder Lao can never be united.

TO ALL YOU LAO PEOPLE IN LAOS PDR,

Lao people in America does not want to hurt Laos or our Lao brothers and sisters.
I never heard anyone that want to go back to Laos and start a war. No one here is thinking that. Everyone here want to go back and have fun, visit their family again. They want to do it now because it is safer and much easier than say 10-15 years ago.

You people need to stop thinking there are a huge conspiracy to take over Laos. Anyone with enough logic and intelligent knows it can not be done. Beside you have nothing to worry about.
We know the better way to change the Laos current government policies is from the interaction with other countries.

Why would any Lao with money go back to Laos? Change the way how to do business. Make it easier and safer for the business people and investor and they will likely to do business there.

I think you mean to say "caused". We're far from Siam, Lan Xang, Chao Anouvong, and so much more.

Although a society's descision is based on their past, we can't hold our future back because of it.

I think its the opposite btw. Tai has always been a word in various languages. Theres a lot of ethnic groups with the name Tai in it. The Thai-Siamese just became the dominant, storming over the other ones creating a massive "Thai" grouping. It is Lao that came into existance after Lan Xang was made.

I think you are mixing up citizenship naming with ethnic group naming.

Oh grow up, the only thing you know about Lao and Thai history is the propagandist crap you were told to repeat like a talking bird in high school. There are thousands of movies that depict acts that are disagreeable to governments and populations all over the world and people can be angry about them, they can even produce their own 'agreeable' movies in response if they want to, but it does not mean they should censor the movies they disagree with and prevent them from being made. One day people like you will stop a movie you disagree with from being produced - the next day a movie you agree with will be censored by other people and you will have no way to stop it from being banned because you have already sold yourself to the interests of book-burning, movie-banning fascists. So let this movie be produced, go and watch it, and if you don't like it, write a book about it, produce your own movie condemning it, start up a pro-official Lao history political party in Thailand, do whatever you want. But don't f***king well tell me what I can and cannot watch.

Thank you for reading Lao history. I have read as well as you. The way of suffering from Siamese used to do to Lao people and King Anou and family, it is still in my memory.

They should not make the movie.

I am impress the person who want to come back to Laos. "Mostly well come back". I would be happier if you come to live in Laos but  not you come and marry some lao lady after that bring them to US.

Thank you

In a way, it's also good if Thai made this movie, Lao people would hate Thai people more and boycott all Thai products. Now we can trade with Chinese and Vietnamese people who respect and never look Lao people down.

This is according to Chotmaihet muang nakhon ratchasima ( Collective Document Related to Khorat ) edited by the Fine Art Department. Readers can discover this hoax in this exact chronicle, "The compendium consist of detailed reports written by Khorat authorities, including Khun Ying Mo's husband, on the evening of the battle. Khorat authorities forwarded these reports to the Bangkok court, hoping to win royal favor for their contribution to the struggle against the Lao and to prove Khorat's loyalty to Siam, about which Bangkok was deeply suspicious. They have also taken great pains to find proof of her "Heroism" but so far have not found any convincing evidences."

And the war that divides your hearts and minds will continue until eternity remembers you only as dust in the wind and never a time will come when you can stand up and truly say you overcame the errors of the past

Blame solves nothing. Lao and Siamese are human brothers, neither are innocent and neither are more like animals than the other. Stuart-Fox may not be Lao but he cannot be neutral either. His approach to Lao history is heavily critiqued by other academics for its own bias. A very good book to read is "contesting visions of the Lao past" - particularly the chapter by Grant Evans on Chao Anouvong - it is the latest critical essay on this period of history by a foreign author and it also critiques the Lao book about Anouvong by Mayoury Ngaosyvathn called "paths to confligration". Charles Keyes also has a chapter about Ya Moh in a book called "cultural crisis and social memory: modernity and identity in Thailand and Laos". None of these authors are 'correct' but they do offer some interesting and new perspectives on a debate that has no solution.

Napoleon Bonaparte once said:

“What is history but a fable agreed upon?”

Every nation fabricated her own fables.  Not only Thailand and Laos; China, Japan and Korea, for instance, have fabricated totally different fables of the same history.

History was written around some inspiring or touching events to portray national glory, to unite people in praise, or anchor a degree of consensus.  Another problem is that most of the written records were completed by the literate class who locked themselves on the top of ivory towers.

None of them has actually witnessed what happened hundreds or thousands of years ago.

Thais are always blamed for the attitude of "Look Down" neighboring countries.  Actually, Thais are looked down by other countries as well.  The difference is, Thais don't give much a damn.  There are tons of things which are more worthwhile to do than to wasting time on such non-sense issues (Lai Sa La)

People love their countiies.  They want to develop their countries.  They want to modernize their livings.  But you can never ever achieve if you keep on....

CLINGING TO THE PAST, DIGGING THE "DIRT AND DEAD" AND BLAME THE OTHERS.

Yeah, just listen to Nopolean Bonafide or whoever you like, but Lao people will never forget about what the Siamese have done to our people. You're talking from a westerner mentality, not from a Lao consciousness. Laos will move forward, but at the same time Lao people will never forget theirs past either. Do you think that China forget about what the foreigners had done to them, what the Japanese did during WWII in Nanking? Chinese people never forget about theirs past that is why they're determined and work hard not to let other countries colonized, bully them, and develop their country where it's today. I'm sure this line sound good to you "forgive and forget", very western, very christian. Oh Nopoleon....blab blab!!!

Hello !

I just see the video. If the film about Chao Anouvong that (named by Thai Thao Soura Nary defaited by Nag MO (La pute) will really realised by Thai producer. It 's directly and hardly touch my heart.
I think i will fly directly to Vientiane for demanding the permission to edit the true reasons of war "Why Chao Anou against Siam ?". I will demand to see with the Informations Minister of Laos directly. People both countries must know the reality.
If they raise these questions really, i would say " Isan must consciencious and be wake up to "Indepandant" While "Pak Tay province they" they want to be Indepandent, and XiengMai was "Lanna" not Thailand furious.

Yes ! Laos was great in the former time, the king Souriyavongsa was the most magnificient and richer king in the southeast asia , under his governing everything was splendid : the educational system ( in pagada of course ), the foreign relation was great the national defense was strong but after he died, everything became bad to worse... finally the country was divided in many parts and each part has its own Chao who hated each others and the ennemy took this opportunity to invade Laos, killing all men who are against them, they made a quick selection in each village choosing best housebuilders, sculptors, goldsmiths, blacksmiths and weavers, made a concentration of those poor people and deported them to bangkok, not enough, acting according to their jealousy, they burned our beloved Vientiane, the only one pagoda the siam soldiers took shelter did not been burned was : wat Sisaketh. So, don`t be surprised to see great sculture, finest jewelries and finest silk production in Bkk. It has its root from LAOS... and why laos has so few skilled people ... and don`t be surprised when you go to Nakhorn Nayok, Samuthprakane near Bkk to find thai phuane, thai mei, thai phuthai there ...Sad story isn`t ? do you hate more thai now? It was a history, we cannot revive and change it... chineses and koreans people were killed by japanese warriors and japanese people were bombed with atomic bombs by the yankees... et ainsi de suite... Here, it seems to me one of speaker understands that no talk about the past. Also they seem to accept that Lao people and Easan people are same nation. Laos has long its own history, its own language and cultures from long time ago.

Actually, the real Thai people also call Easan people as Lao.

When the Lao kingdom was strong it did the same to the smaller neighbouring kingdoms. Slavery was a part of the Lao kingdom, just as much as it was a part of the Siamese. Both Lao and Siamese are to blame for the problems of the past. There is no black and white, no right and wrong. It is a hard reality to swallow, but that is why they call it reality and that is why they call your argument 'romance'.

Exactly HOW MUCH of this history do the current people have to be responsible for? How much of this history do we have to say "Sorry" to all the time? Why am responsible for what my grandparents fought for? Or why are the Thais responsible for what the past Siamese did?

You easily talk about moving forward, but how can you move forward when you can't forgive the past and let it go.

Remembering the past and holding on to it are two different things and I believe you can't understand.

Ya Moh's story is a made up, and no need to create a  movie to make siamese feel superior.  I think the people that have no feeling about what happened in 1827-1828 are not Lao by root. They're probably Lao of different ethic such as Lao Theung (Ka), Lao Seung(Hmong, Mien)... I'm of Tai phoun origin so whever Chiip mentioned in BKK is unrelated to Thai Siamese. Thai Siamese are the barbaric we are talking about here....

You were noot alive in 1837, you cannot remember a single relative of yours that was alive in 1837, the only place you have heard about 1837 is history books that have been continually altered to suit the political interests of today. You don't have 'roots', you are not a tree. Open your mind.

The only way to win Thailand is to develop our country's economy. As long as we are poor we definitely cannot cope with them. Look, right now we depend on Thailand more than they depend on us, means we are defeated. If we have lots of things to export to Thailand than we import from them, then we would be the winner, though this case would hardly be happened.
What is Thailand would need from Laos is electricity, no doubt. One day our dream may come true, say we can produce 28,000 megawatts of hydropower as our Prime Minister said in many conferences.

We must accept that now Laos is poor, even our Lao people don't want to stay in Laos, they love USA, France, Australia more than Laos, to say nothing of Easan (Lao race) people. If one day Laos can be developed more than Thailand, then Eesan people may change their mind to call themself they are Lao, although I doubt about that, but everything might happen who knows.

True, I`d like to witness the day that we would be self -sufficient but for esan people let them there, being as they have been, I don`t think that we could change our boundary...the thai authority had erased the real esan history and created a new understanding for them : thai national, thai language speaking and writing, thai culture and thai mentality and they consider themself as thai 100 % and even if esan was seperated from thailand, they would set up one independent country of their own... but it would be landlocked as laos actually is...it `s only a supposition, so, take it easy !
