Laos holds 20% share in Hongsa coal-fired power plant

(KPL) Half of 710 million tonnes of coal in total will be exploited from Hongsa lignite mining during 27-year concession investment period to supply in Hongsa coal-fired power plant.

The Hongsa lignite mining locates in Hongsa district of Sayaboury province Laos is estimated 710 million tonnes of coal.

According to Mr Sayphet Aphayvanh, Deputy General Manger of Lao Holding State Enterprise told KPL News last week that now his company is considering a joint investment procedure of Hongsa coal-fire power plant with two Thai companies of Banpu and Ratchaburi Companies.

He said that his company has set a plan to hold about 20% shares in the Hongsa coal-fire power plant, which the concession agreement have not yet been signed.

27-year concession, about 340 million tonnes will be exploited to produce electricity.

The Hongsa coal-fired power plant with its production capacity of 1,800 megawatts, it needs 2.3 billion baht of investment.

The joint venture agreement of Hongsa lignite mining among Lao Government, The Banpu Power Company (BPP) of Thailand and Ratchaburi Company of Thailand, expects to be signed soon.

The Lao government or Lao Holding State Enterprise will hold 20% shares, BPP and Ratchaburi holding 40 % share each.

Now Thailand requests to buy more than 7,000 megawatts from Laos to support its economic growth.

maybe i don't have right information.. but seems to me that coal power plant are the worst solution from a ecological point of view.

How the Laos government can accept such project?

Thai reject this project on their land, so they try to find another place to pollute to do it and Laos accept? Oh my god!
