Lowly Laos holds off Filipino lady booters

This article was written by the Filipino sport journalist.  He/she used a poor choice of word toward Lao and its people.

Lowly Laos what does he/she means by that.  I am very much feel offended by this article.  A good journalist would not use a negative word toward any ethnic group of people.

All Laotiane please read the article which is under the hit links right on the Samakomlao page. I don't think you know the definition of "lowly"

Its an adj that means humble in spirit.

Its nearly the same as saying "Quiet" but seriously Lowly Laos flows... makes a good title and obviously it worked because one person is worked up about it.

Well, ****, is your team NOT lowly or are they actually telling the truth? Might make you feel bad, but thats just reality. Lao team has no money and little training, so of course it is lowly. Next you will argue that there should be no winners and losers in sport. Its called competition.

I don't think this writer meant anything degrading by it. Just a poor choice of word to describe the ranking of the team in the game.

I think underdog is more properiate to discribe a team of sport than Lowly Laos.  I know the defination of lowly in heart and mind means that a person is a humble being and not to get upset easily but not when you describe a team of sport.

The correct word would be the
underdog team.

Lowly in heart and mind is only to discribe the person characters and not a good word to discribe any of the human race of people.

I know the dictionary will give you all the meaning: if the word was use as  a noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, etc. and each one of them will have a different meaning when put in a sentence as people should know if they study Enlish grammar.

Please to a person who made the comment of arguing about not using winners and losers.  You misunderstood what I am try to say that lowly is a negative word to discribe any person race and is poor choice of word to discribe a team of sports period.

The correct choice of word would be the underdog Laos team period that is how they said in English Language when discribing a sport team that did not have  enough financial  support or other disadvantage like skills in sports, etc.

One part from the news
"NAKHON, RATCHASIMA -- The Philippine women’s team blew a 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes left Monday and was held to a 2-2 tie by lowly Laos at the start of women’s football in the 24th Southeast Asian Games at the Tumbon Muenapug Stadium here.

Laos, a relative newcomer to the Games, knocked in a goal in the 73rd minute courtesy of striker Phaivanh Souphavahn that forged the tie, giving both the Laotians and the favored Filipinos just a point each."

Judging from the news, I feel that the editor using the world lowly Laos wanted to express that the really bad Lao women's team also could equallize the highly profile Philippine women's team. The kind of looking our Lao ladies down. It is sort of that our Lao lady team could not be compared with Philipino team in any aspects.

I am surprise by the fact that some people want to change our name's team to underdog. Why don't call Lao women's team or Laotion women's team. I don't know you are stupid or insane person?

Look the real meaning of underdog:

Underdog = One who is expected to lose a contest or struggle,  One who is at a disadvantage .

Or it even can understand that they are very bad, even dog would be better.

Stop looking down Lao people. We are the sportsmen. The outcome is not the most important.

Yes, I think this comment definitely expresed by Thai person who always like to look Lao people down. It is the Thai nature. Thai and Philipino people are the same.

Actually, our Lao government, the Minister of Foreign affairs in particular, should protest the Philippine government regarding issue.

The meaning of Lowly Laos doesn't mean the Lao women's team, but country. Laos is country, only Lao means people. This editor looked down our country, which has its own independent. And All Lao people are proud of Laos.

We are in poor Laos country, but never asked the Philippine people for food, no doubt.

I think we need someone from native speaking country to explain the history of the word underdog and lowly.

Both underdog and top dog come from the lingo of dog fights in the late 19th century. In these fights, two dogs would attack each other. The winner of the match was the top dog; the loser was the underdog. As early as 1879, the expression was used figuratively: "It smells of old . . .readers with ragged edges like the ears of the 'under dog' in the fight" (Taylor, Summer-Savory).

Although the expression is originally American, the first recorded use of underdog to describe people is found in a British newspaper: "There is an indefinable expression in his face and figure of having been vanquished, of having to succumb, of having been 'under-dog' as the saying is" (Daily Telegraph, 1887). In 1892 underdog appeared in another British newspaper, looking like the noun we know today: "The mission of the Democratic party is to fight for the under-dog" (Daily Chronicle).

That last quote brings us to the political milieu, where underdog continues to be a dominant descriptive metaphor. Reuters' news on Wednesday reported in their election results coverage: "Bush. . .dealt a possibly fatal blow to underdog. . .John McCain."

I am  going to start using the word NO DOUBT at the end of every comment I make from now on, NO DOUBT.

I am so happy there are some people in the Laos Socialist government that are mature, logical, and resonsible. If they are all like the person I quoted the country is in a shiet hole. NO DOUBT.

(I never read or saw anywhere but here that a person actually use the words NO DOUBT at all their comment. I like to know who taught you to speak like that?)

Vietnam thrashed lowly Philippines 10:0 biggrin

TUMBON MUEANGPUG, THAILAND -- The Philippines will now have to cheer the enemy.

The Vietnamese mangled the Filipino booters black and blue for a full 90 minutes Wednesday afternoon, coasting to a 10-0 victory in the football competition of the 24th Southeast Asian Games at the Tumbon Meangpug Stadium here.

That loss effectively reduced the young Filipinos to mere spectators -- if not cheerleaders for the Vietnamese -- for their chances of advancing to the Final Four now rest on a bigger victory by the defending champions over Laos.

The Filipinos were put in this predicament after they were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by the Laotians on Monday.

The Laos-Vietnam match is scheduled for Friday.

The Filipinos will advance to the semifinals only if the Vietnamese beat the Laotians by a margin of 11 goals or better. Laos gets into the Final Four if it scores at least once and loses by no more than 10 goals.

Strikers Do Thi Ngoc Cham and Doan Thi Kim Chi scored hat-tricks in leading the Vietnamese to the overpowering win, one that’s even better than a 9-0 whipping they dealt the Filipinos in the AFC tournament in Myanmar.

Four foreign players with Filipino roots have since been added to the RP roster, but even their presence couldn’t keep the game close as the Vietnamese raced to a 6-0 lead in the first half to take the fight out of the Filipinos.

“We’re down, yes, but we’re still hoping and praying,” said eloquent skipper Marielle Benitez. “They (Vietnamese) are very quick and that’s their main strength.”

The team will take Thursday off but will return to training Friday in hopes of advancing to the semifinals.

“That is a definite possibility,” Benitez said. “Laos is just basically a two-player team.”

Bui Thi Tuyet Mai and Tran Thi Kim Hong were the other Vietnamese starters who contributed goals, with Thi Minh Nguyet Nguyen coming off the bench to knock in the final two.

The Filipinos managed only two shots on goal against the Vietnamese who made 22 attempts, all but four of them clear shots.

Tournament format calls for the top two placers in each group to advance to the crossover semifinals. Thailand and Myanmar (Burma) both tote 1-0 cards in Group B.

Oh! It is good news. 10-0. The lowly Philipino was suck.

Probably, the bravely Laotian women's team talked to the Vietmese women's team beforehand.

This really suited for them, the lowly (underdog) Philipino.
