Vientianemai newpspaper reported that recently the fashion from the neiboring countries has influenced the lifestyle of Lao students. Many Lao female students now wearing a very tight shirt and very short Lao skirt, dyeing their hairs, painting their finger nails with different colors, having bracelet on their legs, and carrying a very small and modern bag to school. The male students have a messy hair styles and put their book to the pocket of their tousers.
Do you think it is suitable for Lao students to do like that?
Laos want to be like the rest of the world. So Lao people need to dress and behave like the rest of the world.
And so Laos will loose all it's specificity, it's identity, and loose all it's cultural value and richness... and then loose all it's touristic potential and the money that go with it.
No one should force them to keep traditional clothes.... but it's possible to incite them to do it with a better cultural education.... education is not only learn hos to read, write and count... it's also know about it's country, values, traditions, understand why they are important...
I live in Australia what I saw here is that schools still have UNIFORM, and all students must be respected by the rules of those schools, the uniforms are the same no tide shirts or too short skirts. Only colleges and universities don't have uniform.
Yes, paris - vientiane, you`re right, these students ought to dress according to the regulation of their school or institute and the concerned sector should show them the importance of the cultureand it is the right of everyone to keeping alive our nice lao culture, including these students who like to show their body ...we `ll regret it when we have lost it. University students are adults, don't see why they can't do anything they want.
I think the young lady in the photo is a prime example of blossoming woman hood bursting at the seams. I think at night when she tries to sleep she is dreaming of doing un mentionable things with big thick falangs.

yes, but there are so many wonderfull possibilities to "modernise" lao traditional style rather than just copy western style!
Girls want more comfortable and little bit more sexy clothes? ok that's just evolution of mentalities and behaviour... but why not wear some "modern style typical lao clothes"? i mean for example shorter sin (skirts with more modern shape, but still using so beautifull traditional lao tissues)... or other ideas like this: make lao style more modern and more appropriate with modern life, but preserve cultural specificity, richness and improve traditional know-how.

I think it's great and look comfortable. If one day i live in Laos, i would definitly dress like this (sometime... not everyday...).
I understand that each country is trying hard to preserve its own cultures, including laos of course, that's very idealistic but the reality is hardly any one country can force her own people to eat and dress only her traditional way of life. And you yourself, paris_vientiane, even admitted that this is not feasible on a daily basis to wear this long and large skirt day in and day out. Not only this but economically it's way too expensive to keep a wardrobe full of silky costumes. To preserve lao traditional style, I'm all for it BUT I still need to see some form of variety beyond that. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... That's my 2 kips

You mean PAH SARONG? I still wear them around the house. My friends think it is for old people. I guess they are too Americanized/Westernized. I am not embarassed. I don't care what t hey say. I am comfortable and that is all that matter.

In my opinion, Laos people have a valuable culture and traditional which impress to oversea. However, the global will be changed, the meaning of Laos should not be destroyed by Laos people such as the way to wear, hairstyle, and diary life. As I am a Laos people, I think we had a very great things in our history which we should be took care for existing the meaning of Laos. Better to following eastern style, we should show out and encourage Laos traditional and culture to the international world. For example, Laos silk is very popular in foreigner's vision. They are so fantastic to the manufacture of Laos silk and some products such as 'Chin', 'Pair Mai', and Laos pattern which can not copy from others. Finally, I think the way how to wear or style is depends on personal thinking but I may recommend that we should wear at a right time and at a right place. For instance, we go out of the country which has local people wear jeans with tight T-shirt. It is not wrong that we can follow the style. In opposite, Laos students are setting to study at class room, they should wear the uniform which support to university's rules. It is right thing to do and be cool to show out, is't it? What is bad when Lao university students wear a bit tight. Looking at that picture, I feel nothing bad. They wear similar to other job women in Lao society.
For sure there is nothing wrong in this photo But the overall subject is important (lao people who prefer dress western-style rather than lao-traditional)
Anyway, i don't agree wit the comment that say that those girls just want to attract foreigners with sexy clothes :

For European or US standards, such clothes are very usual and not considered as very sexy (for us, sexy clothes are far more sexy than what we can see in Laos)... so this kind of clothes don't attract/invite any foreigner.. they are so common for us. On the contrary.. a farang who go to Laos is always very impressed by Sin or traditional clothes because it's new and uncommon for him.... if a girl want to attract a farang, she have to wear traditional clothes, certainly not something that we would consider as "common and very little sexy".

when we recruit new staff for our institution, we first inspect the style and way of the clothing the applicants are wearing , the style of their hair ( with discretion of course )if they have tinted hair in blue , blond, red or brown except black and not wearing decently, we would not dismiss them but we simply shall not accept them in the final interview...We know that clothings and hair style has not any importance, everyone can select or choose what he or she loves but we have to think about our society and our culture and in the other hand our institution cannot recruit people wearing like pros or gang`s memebers...
