Don't be shy. If you are gay, come out and play.

I know being gay and Lao is tough when everyone is trying to hide himself. It's hard to find like-minded people to be friends and hang out with.

I'm very curious, are there any groups or organizations that provide support to Lao gay community in Laos.

Happy being gay!

Good question. What kind of help or need? Do Lao gay people need one, I mean special needs? Or are they just content with who they are, how they are treated...?

I guess like other countries, there are a group being set up to spread the safe-sex message (to prevent AIDS and other STD) among gay community, to provide consultancy for those who are facing problems...; the gay-oriented websites also being established for gay people to meet each other ( not for sex der but to provide a platform for like-minded people to meet, exchange experiences, thoughts...provide supports, etc).

First of all, you need to know between gay and transvestite

Gay or homosexual is someone who is attracted to the same sex. However, they don't have any desire to be like women (act or dress like women). You can't really tell just by looking at them coz they wear, speak, act...just like ordinary men.

Transvestite or Katoey is someone who likes to dress like a woman or act or want to be like one.

The ones you see in Savannakhet are probably transvestites. But generally gay men are not very open about their sexual orientation. Some people are actually married to women. But many are hidding themselves in the closest. It's hard for these people to mingle with like-minded people because they are all trying to hiding themselves. I like to call these people "mutants", just like the ones in X-Men, in the possitive sense, of course.

anyway, gays or transvestite, these people are in "contradiction" with themselves............they are attracted by people with the same sex...

I can understand it is a huge pain for them !

Killing is bad. Please don't do that. Police may catch you and put you into jail. When you die, you go to hell, if there is one.

What support do you want? Is something wrong with you?
If you are gay. YOU ARE GAY. People dont give a damn what you do in your privacy but just dont do gay stuff in public like the gay people in America and other Western country.

When I was younger I've seen gay people around in Laos. They dress like every one else. They blend in with the society. That how it should be. Gay are people so act like people.
I've also seen gay Lao in USA. They dress and talk like American gay people even practice that lifestyle. (I don't mean the sex) I mean the way they live their live, the clothes they weird and where they hang out at.

I don't think Lao is ready for the IN YOUR FACE type of gay in Laos right now.

Laos is a lovely place for visitors to the region. Gays are becoming quite visible within Lao society and gay business entrepreneurs and managers are setting the trend with stylish boutique operations that compliment the diversity of local cultures. However, the government is not going to allow a sex industry to emerge publicly as it has in neighboring countries. The Lao are moderate in their behavior and while it's natural for friends to casually hug or hold hands, public displays of romantic affection are against the norm. Novice monks, while less formal in their interpersonal relationships than in Thailand, are still to be accorded proper respect. Please respect local laws and customs during your travels in Laos. Harsh penalties, including fines and imprisonment, have in the past been imposed on Lao citizens who were seen to breach the social norm or become inappropriately intimate with foreigners.

We'll tell you a secret. Laos is a don't-miss destination that most travelers to Asia skip simply because they haven't a clue about the wealth of beauty and tradition waiting to be discovered here. Spectacular landscapes that would have thrilled Ansel Adams abound; traditional life that has long-vanished from other parts of Asia continues here with refreshing vitality; friendly, law-abiding citizens wear handsome faces that reflect the converging streams of cultures and ethnicities that flow along the mighty mother river Mekong; costumes, cuisine, gardens and homes are a color-splashed feast for the senses. Laos has a very young population, so we expect its refreshing vibrancy to blossom further as the new generation gains confidence and freedom.

Don't travel to Laos expecting to find a sophisticated gay scene. Instead, enjoy the gentle and familial tolerance towards local gays who have begun to stand out and contribute their talents to trendy cafés, pubs, boutique hotels, galleries, restaurants and craft shops popping up in the two main cities

And more on

Hey,

I am interested in you question about gay community in Laos. Well we have some organisations that support to raise the fund for gay community to set up community panel connecting government organisations such as HIV/AIDS centre.

Anyway, to find out more about gay comminty you can find out from PSI/Lao www.psi.org and I know that BI is also involving wiith male to male safer sex program as well.

Also to response with some other commends, that government will not vast $$$$..... YOU ARE ENTIRELY WRONG ! Government does not always put national budget on the program, but empowering community to conduct their activities and fund rasing is their responsibility....

If you don't know, I think you'd better shut up !

The population of Luang Prabang is 26,000 (that's over 1,000 Gay men)

Bars & Clubs :

Maylek Pub (mixed)

On the corner of Kitsarath Settathirat Rd and Visunnarat Rd, not far from the Dara Market. Open air night spot. Easy-going, cozy atmosphere. Good variety of ****tails. DJ parties on occasion (watch for flyers around town). Reggae and blues beats, low-slung lounge chairs, and smiles from strangers (imagine that!).

Discos :

  • Dao Faa (mixed) Near the stadium. Lots of cute local guys and some gays. Nightly.
Duang Jampa (mixed) Just outside town, about 15-20 minutes by tuk-tuk or truck (ask your driver to wait and take you home). Open nightly, from 9:30pm-midnight. Very popular with local gays.Muang Xuo (mixed) Phou Vao Rd. Nightly (closes before midnight). Packed and popular Lao style disco, with live music, disco dancing and socializing. Plan to walk home if you stay until closing as transportation will be difficult to find late at night.

Massage and Spas for men :

  • Dhammada de Massage Near the Dala Market, 020-554-5995. Mainly masseurs, unlike the rest of the massage places in town, and a class above, in both setting and massage.
Red Cross Blind Massage Red Cross complex. Herbal steam sauna and cool-off veranda where you may sip special herbal tea or get an incredibly inexpensive massage. Very down-to-earth and relaxing. Not gay, but it has a discreet gay vibe. You will most likely meet local gays or gay tourists there. Massage from 9am. Sauna opens at 4pm and closes at 9pm.

Vientiane

The capital city is a short ride from the border with Thailand at Nongkhai. It is very easy to visit Vientiane, even for a day. There is a shuttle bus from the Thai side of the friendship bridge which will take you across to Laos. The Visa-on-arrival office however is not always open, so be sure to check before you cross or you may not be able to enter Laos.

The Mekong river divides a community of people who are basically Esarn culturally. Everyone in Vientiane can speak and understand Thai. They all listen to Thai pop music, watch Thai TV, and it is relatively easy for the Lao to cross over to Thailand. On the Thai side of the river, people listen to Lao country songs and speak Lao. The most noticeable distinctions from Thai-Esarn are the bright red dirt roads which slice through an abundance of trees and wildflowers which have long since vanished from Thai farms and gardens. You may also notice that Lao temples are more animistic, colorful, and free-form compared with the institutionalized decor and behaviors in Thai temples. In general, Laos appears lush, natural and carefree.

Vientiane has a frontier town feel to it, with its drowsy lanes, ever-spreading gardens, and French-colonial villas slowly fading into sepia-tinted retirement.

There are lots of clubs, karaoke bars, discos, and restaurants in town that appeal to local gays and lesbians. Nightlife swings until early morning.

It is best to use Thai baht while in Vientiane. The initial fun of wielding fistfuls of kip gets tired quickly, and you won't be able to exchange any of it when you leave unless you have your original receipt when you first exchanged your money into local currency.

The population of the capital city is over 200,000 (that's 8,000 Local Gay men)

Bars & Clubs :

Blue Cool (mixed) Located on the right side of the road as you drive on Luangprabang Rd from the airport to Novotel. New club opened by the former owner of Pack Luck.Dong Tan Palace Hotel nightclub On the river front, east of the city center. Many gays after everywhere else in the city closes at midnight, as it's open until at least 2am every night.GQ On the same street as the InterCity and Orchid hotel, which is a side street from the road along the Mekong river, Fa Ngum Rd. ("GQ is the new gay bar in Vientiane. The best time to visit is 10pm-midnight, when most guys head off to the Don Chuan club. It was banging when we went last night! GQ is really easy to find, just find the Inter City Hotel and walk down the street next to it. Bingo! Wew chatted to loads of friendly guys, and the owner also has a hotel up in LPB)Discos :D-Tech (mixed) At the Novotel. Best decorated club in town with an international crowd. Far and away Vientiane's most popular disco. Jam packed on Wed Fri Sat and Sun after 9pm. Closes at 11pm - same as everywhere. Extremely loud music, of course. Outdoor boxing school beside the river. Place Nam Phou fountain in the evenings. The riverside park.
Crusing Places :

Saunas for men :

Next door to GQ bar is the sauna frequented by many gays: Sauna Wat Chan

Based on my Longman dictionary:

Woman who loves another woman= lesbian (or gay. This term 'gay' is now also used for woman just like "guys" used for men and women)

Man who does not want to be a woman but loves another man= gay

Man who wants to be a woman= transvestite

Woman who wants to be a man= tomboy/lesbian

Man or woman who loves both man and woman (who can swing both ways)= bi or bisexual

There are also terms like faggot, transgender, homosexual, homophobia (those who hate people with above-mentioned sexual orientations)...

I don't think being gay, lesbian or transgender is diseases or being sick; they are born with it.
