The World Peace Committee of Indonesia has announced it will present Laos with a khong of peace, a musical instrument used to recognise peaceful countries, in March this year.
Committee president Mr Djuyoto Suntani met with the President of the Peace and Solidarity Committee of Laos, Mr Bounpone Sangsomsack, at the Lao Plaza Hotel in V ientiane yesterday to discuss preparations for the presentation ceremony.
Once the khong is presented, Laos will become the fourth country in the world and the first country in Southeast Asia to be recognised in this way by the World Peace Committee of Indonesia, according to Mr Bounpone.
During the meeting, Mr Suntani praised Laos for its enduring peace and solidarity, with no violence or discrimination between ethnic groups, a fulfilment of the Resolution of the Eighth Party Congress held in March 2006.
Mr Bounpone informed the delegation led by Mr Suntani of current socio-economic developments in Laos , explaining the government's policy of promoting family businesses to make the country a modern and industrialised nation by 2020.
He also commented on the growth of the Lao tourism industry, which has generated significant income and helped to alleviate poverty in many communities.
On the same day, Mr Suntani called on the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Thongloun Sisoulith, at his office to discuss future cooperation between the two nations.
The delegation from the World Peace Committee of Indonesia also visited places of cultural and historical interest in Vientiane .
The Peace and Solidarity Committee of Laos was established several years ago and every year holds events to create public awareness of the importance of building a peaceful world.
i think i knew what we are trying to do, we are trying to make people come to visit laos so we can make money, government can make money. but you should not say " laos is the most beautiful country in the world" coz that's not true. so they gonna laugh on us and think we are lier. then finally they won't come to to visit us. coz they know who we are and what our country look like, they seek information about laos before they come to laos. i think this is not a good idea.

Beautiful or peaceful, i agree with the person above. It is naive and obviously wrong. This Indonesian "World" peace council can give khongs to whichever country it likes, but there is not attempt to explain what peace actually means. Does peace mean a lack of terrorism and insurgency? In this case, Laos is not peaceful. In fact, it is one of a very few countries in the world to have had a coup plot exposed against it in 2007. It also has a small continuing counter-insurgency action being waged against groups of Hmong bandits by the Lao People's Army. Laos also has a relatively hgh rate of dometic violence against women perpetrated mainly by alcoholic husbands. Then there is violence against human trafficking victims. Of course, every country has problems, but this is exactly the reason why it is silly to say Laos is 'the most peaceful'. Yes, the government spends alot of time telling the Lao people that everything is peaceful, but come on, think for yourselves, don't swallow every bit of propaganda as if it were true.

I would agree with you if drunkards don`t exist in other countries in this world .
Is is wrong to say Laos is the most peaceful country in the world. That means no other countries can beat Laos in term of peace, stability. prosperity and happiness. I don't think so.
peaceful country ok ! but most peaceful... we have to think twice before saying it and adding " in the world " it`s simply impossible ! because we still have many many thing to arrange, to understand, to manage to reach the word " most " peaceful !
