(KPL) Vientiane authorities have shut down 55 sawmills for their substandard operation.
As a result only 160 out of 215 sawmills in Vientiane capital are allowed to operate now. Of these 107 sawmills have been ordered to improve their operation standard.

The order was reported in a meeting held on 6 March at the Vientiane Capital Industry and Commerce Service, under the chairmanship of Deputy-Minister of Industry and Commerce Mr Siaosavath Savengsuksa. The meeting was aimed at disseminating regulations on forestry management, the management on wooden products and non-timber forestry products.

The dissemination involved the Prime Minister’s Directive No. 30, issued on 17 August 2007, pertaining to stepping up the strict management on forestry activities and wood business, the decree of Minister of Industry and Commerce on the management of wood and wood products, which was issued on 4 February this year.

the problem is not cutting, the problem is "responsible cutting".

You can cut, as long as , for a given land, you never cut in one year more than what nature can renew during the same year. If you cut a tree, you have to plant another tree. And if a tree need 40 years to grow (exemple), you should not cut more than 1/40th of the land you exploit.

If you respect this rule, it's OK. If you don't , you are just a criminal toward nature and future generations! Authorities should just stop your business, take everything you have to try to get money to repair your damages, and put you into jail
