Along with the That luang marsch project there will a resttlement of 200.000 Chinese people. In addition 100.000 illegal immigrant are to be expected to settle in the same area.
Ho do you expect Vientiane to be in let´s say 10 or 20 years? Will ther be any lao culture been left over? Or do lao people not care about theire culture and heritage?
The resettlement plan is for 200000 chinese immigrants. And of course the Lao goverment denies that this is the case: Laos denies 'Chinatown' rumours Source: 14-FEB-2008 Intellasia | DPA Feb 14, 2008 - 7:00:00 AM The Lao government has denied rumours that a huge property development project on the outskirts of Vientiane will become a sprawling Chinatown, home to 50,000 Chinese families, government sources said Tuesday February 12.

You seem to be the most stupid man who edited this topic with no grounds. The rumours said only 50,000 but you put 200 000, means 40 times.
I have never known the person who is stupid like you. What is your point?
Invade most of the time use with 'war', like the american troops invaded Iraq. So if you say 300 000 chinese will invade Lao it means some kind of war, so this person had bad intention when he used the term INVADE. Judge for yourself what kind of person this one is.
I worry next 50 or 100 there is no more lao people in laos it will be little china one part of china like yunnan province of china ,right now north to south chinese from china are everywhere ,lao 100% try to move to oversea country because of economic $50 to $100 per month some lest some no income some rich but not many like poor, lao 100%try to sell their property and move to country side because no money lao lao peoples in laos now keep the mouth shut nothing we can do ,goverment let them come money only ,look at their house cost more than 100 thousand US dollar but their in come only $200 per month drive volve BM mercedes bench but my father make $300 us still livr in hut drive old moto cycle ,i am teen still in shool I worry in future what I gonna do what kind the job I have and where i am going to live I really don`t want to be like street kids no job with out food right now poor more poor rich more rich ,goverment don`t care us anymore money talk only they themself first look at sea game next year watch everything going up and expensive lao ppels will die slowly alive ,,REMEMBER if you go to laos don`t forget bring lot visa and naster card or line of credit ok to help lao peoples thank you this is lao boy in vientiane take care bye
This is similar case like the US and Mexico. As long as the Lao Government knows what they are doing, Chinese immigrant should be positive impact to Laos. However, miss step will affect long term, possible the third generation. There are many example models for Laos government to look at, Thailand for instance, most politicians and people who in power are chinese. Meanwhile, in the US, Chinese are more like a working bee.
Lao people have every right to be concern because the original poster has some points. I just return from Laos a week ago, I stayed in Vang Vieng for one month and the sign of Chinese are quite visible. Some of them rent houses around the tourists area, and open shops. I also saw some Chinese around 6 or 8 people in one house just like the Mexicans live over here in the US. I didn't see many Chinese in Vang Vieng when I went there 3 years ago. There are many of them these time. There are even more in Vientiane, I assume there are probably over 100,000 or more in Laos as we speak. I guess the border gate is just kept open for the Chinese. I also heard about there will be 5,000 families coming to Bung That Luang, who knows how many people in one family, 50 people? Lao government can't do anything 'cause the Chinese government helped built sport arenas for SEC2009. Lao government basically bent over on this matter. Don't read the news, go to Laos and see it for yourself. Please don't model Thailand as example for Laos, I hope Laos doesn't do what Thailand had done. If Laos economy lead by the Chinese, the chances of Lao people become second class citizen is inevitable. Every Lao individual should be concerns about this matter. I am very concern about it. Lengsavad won't say the whole truth because he is Chinese. Just like some Lao Chinese who migrated to the US here, some of them don't want to associated Lao or Laos period.
thats why when i get my eduction and am ready, im going bback to my homeland n create businesses there for laos, my people will never b second class in our own country. i hope many others share the same idea as i do. as long as there are lao ppl with the same thought as me our people will never fade. cheers!!! to the future of laos where u and i are in it
Just have a look what is going on in Tibet in these days. After a third day of protests, there have been reports of around 100 Tibetans killed and an escalation of the protests on Lhasa. Tanks and troops patrolling Lhasa as Chinese authorities attempt to maintain control in the Tibetan capital.
Chinese invaded Tibet and the same pictures you might see in a few years in Laos as well. Just let Chinese settle uncontrolled in Laos and give them as much Land as they want and Lao children have to learn Chinese as the first language and not lao anymore.
The government has explained its development plans for That Luang marsh, saying that the project will not be as extensive as rumoured.
Standing Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad addresses the press conference. Speaking at a press conference held yesterday in the Prime Minister's Office, Standing Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad said the government had not entered into any agreements with the developer of That Luang marsh to bring in 50,000 Chinese families to live in the area.
Mr Somsavat said the government had granted permission for the development to a joint venture between a Lao company and a Chinese company; the Chinese firm had successfully developed Suzhou Industrial Park in China . The companies will develop the marsh within the next 50 years with the possibility of an extension in accordance with land laws.
The Lao company expects to retain a 5 percent share in the investment.
“The partnership will develop the marsh and hand it over to the Lao government when the joint venture agreement comes to an end,” Mr Somsavat told the press conference, adding that all property and industrial units would also be handed over to the Lao government at that time.
He confirmed that any Lao person with enough money could purchase a property or business unit in the new development zone. There would be no discrimination among buyers and no special concessions for Chinese citizens.
He said the Chinese company would profit from the sale of buildings and business centres in the new town.
Mr Somsavat said the reason the government had granted permission for a foreign company to develop the area was part of the Party and government's policy to turn its land into capital.
He explained how the project was initiated, saying that the Lao government wanted to build a sports stadium for the SEA Games in Vientiane next year, but had insufficient funds for such a project.
Mr Somsavat had met with the Governor of the China Development Bank, who offered to find a reliable Chinese company to whom to give a loan to build the sports stadium, while the Lao government must offer a suitable piece of land to the joint-venture investors in return.
The government and the Chinese company selected That Luang marsh as suitable for the development of a new township and industrial zone.
He said that Laos would benefit from the project because it would have a new urban development without having to seek a loan to carry out the work itself.
He added that whatever form the development took, the government would still achieve its goal of having a new sports stadium.
Mr Somsavat said the government had agreed to compensate local people who were the legal owners of land in the proposed development area.
According to officials, the Chinese company requires an area of 1,600 hectares for the development, 600 ha of which will be turned into a water park and the rest will be used for businesses and industry.
Lao Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad held a press conference Monday in the capital to deny persistent reports that the That Luang property project, on the eastern outskirts of the capital, was being developed to accommodate an massive influx of Chinese immigrants into the landlocked communist country.
"There have been a lot of false rumours about this project," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy. "They are calling it a Chinatown. It is not a Chinatown," Yong said in a telephone interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
Somsavat, a former foreign minister and one of the few Lao leaders who can speak Mandarin, called the press conference to clarify the status of That Luang marsh development project which is being jointly developed by a Lao company and its Chinese partner.
"The partnership will develop the marsh and hand it over to the Lao government when the joint venture agreement comes to an end," Somsavat was quoted in the Vientiane Times.
He explained that the joint venture had been granted a concession to develop a "new township and industrial zone" in the Vientiane suburb as a means of repaying the Chinese government for financing the construction of a new sports stadium for Vientiane to host the South-East Asia Games next year.
The concession allows the joint venture to sell residential and industrial units to both Lao nationals and foreigners, including Chinese citizens.
The contract lasts for 50 years, after which it may be extended, said Somsavat. The township-cum-industrial estate will reportedly cover 1,600 hectares, 600 hectares of which will be turned into a water park.
"The labour will be recruited here, in Laos, and if necessary the company will hire some technicians from China," said Yong, who also denied rumours that many of the thousands of Chinese labourers brought in to build the sports stadium had remained in Laos.
Standing Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad He confirmed that any Lao person with enough money could purchase a property or business unit in the new development zone. There would be no discrimination among buyers and no special concessions for Chinese citizens.

You really believe that? No Lao person will be able to get any share from that cake at all!

Well, it is great that you do not believe what once you heard from someone. You still need use your brain figure out the messages whether there is any ground to believe. However, it would be really inappropriate if you just guess otherwise when the thing has not happened.
Why don't you keep watching how would that happen rather than just accuse Lao government with no grounds? That would be wise of you, I think.
On the one hand, for me, I would somewhat believe people telling, abeit not 100%. And If it doesn't happen according to what they said I will ask them or blame them.
On the other hand, if we do not belive on what people told us, who we should believe? Should we believe when dogs tell us? I don't think that I would understand the dog language, sorry.
Wow, it's even more than I heard of 5000 families. 50,0000 families, I like to know how many people per family that is the question. 50,000x50(people per family) = 2,500,000 people. 1,600 hectares that is around 4000 acres, that almost like another city. 4000 acres is very huge piece of land their. What can the Lao government do? Joint venture between Lao and Chinese company is a lie, there're only Chinese. The lease is for 50 years, by then the Chinese already have planted their seed in Laos, how the hell Lao government going to get rid of them and how do you think the Chinese will leave? Again, the Lao government just bent over backward again. I don't see their point of hosting SEC2009 when they don't have money, they're just a bunch of big face corruptors. Shame on Lao government.
China has 1 child policy for each family, it means you only allow to have 1 baby, so where the person above saying 50 chinese in 1 single family. This person must be crazy or an idiot.
I don't understand why lao people should be fear about chinese in Laos... Don't forget that chinese people are every where in the world, in USA, Africa, Europe, Australia, etc...
Lao people are also every where in the world... Like vietnamese, cambodian etc...
So, do lao people or chinese in the USA, in France or other country act like they invaded their new homeland...?
They do business, they work, they respect their new homeland, they pay taxes etc...
Laos is Laos, and it will always be Laos no China...
So where is the problem...?
Laos is a great and strong country, don't fear about other...

The 1 Child policy is only for mailnland China. It is not in Tibet where the Chinese can hava as many Children as they want and it will not be in Laos where the Chinese also can have as many Children as they want!!!!!
we are not ready in every point neither aren`t our sportmen and sportwomen, let`s grap twenty medals or shame of us ! holala ! we want to run but our legs are weak, poor laos ! we want to fly but we have no wings...
When i come to read some news here, i think some of you don't know nothing about politic or business, you are like children just born...
Only thing you can do is criticize everything in Laos, even lao people...
Who are you ? How old are you ? What do you do like job ? How many children have you ? Do you live in Laos ? What can you do to help lao people ?
You are just behind your computer like babies, crying after something that you don't own... But you want it at all like babies crying for his toys...
You want Laos to change, to be a democratic country (what is democratic country anyway ?), to fight against poverty, fight against corruption, make Laos to be a better place to live...
But you can't do nothing, nothing, you are just like nothing...
Laos doesn't need you, because you are useless, so useless...
Hehe ! I do pay tax to the government, donnating to poor people, contributing to the construction of road in my village, what can I do more ??? I`m not rich and could you mind allowing me to ask you a question ? you who are so clever, what have you done to the country and people ? why insulting people who want to express their idea ? the construction of the country doesn`t come from just a single idea, all people who posted here worry about laos destiny, everyone present here love our motherland , so no need to shout rude words between ourselve LAO ! hehehe !
stop fighting Lao people! he problem which the initial Poster showed is a serious one. But you ar fighting about the small stuff. Lao culture is already inluenced by Thai medias ( or what TV channel are you guys watching in Laos?) and now the chinese will take over...... Don't you guys get it? or is this a children's forum here?
as far as this topic concern.... it is touchy subject!! everybody feels threathen in some way that chinese folks are taking over laos.
back in the early 1900's my grandpa and his relatives did the samething... my grandpa is full blood chinese.. to be exact it was back in 1915, my grandpa was just a little boy when he left china with his relatives... they got on the boat and floated down the MeKong River and ending up landing in Laos... ever since than they've been living a normal life as lao citizen... run business.. he married a lao lady(my grandma).. the fact to this topic is... the chinese people been known to spread all over part of asia.

This discussion is not against Chines People at all, I think. It is more about the question of how can Laos as such a small country with such a small number of people living here, can keep its Identity, its Culture and Heritage. Compareing the number of people living in Vientiane, regardless of 50000 Chinese or 200.000 Chinese will come will be there a real Lao culture in the Future or not?
in France, in Paris, allways know what is China Town ! Place where Chinese regroup. But, the question is, are they influent ?
In France, we know that Chinese people coming to do buisness and that all. When a policy comes to arrest them, they can speak chinese but they understand french. Its a reality.
They are not in politic, not in education ... just in communuty of chinese people. When you see London, whith many communitys like Indian, Pakistan, Chinese etc ... are you sure thats is good for the future ?
All around the world, Chinese people make same community, they are regrouping and we think they are assimilited but its wrong, they can be docile, calm and peace but major part of them don't assimilited, they rejects others cultures ... imagine when there are a big community.
But, Laos with 6M habs need to be more and more ... to build the next Lao.
Who are you ? How old are you ? What do you do like job ? How many children have you ? Do you live in Laos ? What can you do to help lao people ?
I'm not a child, but perhaps I speak like a child cause I don't be very good in english, not very rich, not very clever but why I post here so ? Cause, here, I can speak about Laos, I can speak with Lao spirit, Lao people ... and what can I do for Laos ? Just allways loving, it's very good I think, I don't live in Vientiane or others Lao's cities but I choose to be Lao, and if you see me 10 years later, you can ask me again, what can you do for Laos ? I will smile :)
PS Indeed, It will be so easy for me to speak french with you, but It is good either to speak english, to speak together ;)

Ok ? Now you understand ? Where are the USA ? I think in the next few years China will be the most foreign country to invest in Laos !
I agreewith Common aboveif in fact 50.000 Chinese family come to live in VTE no one know for sure how many they going to come , and 2008 how many VTE population compare the new Chinese immigrant it going to increase VTE population to double and the traffic going to be jam pollution , many more problem …………..What is the point to let Chinese ppl stay in lao for 50 years exchange for stadiumBy the time 50th year the Chinese they be long gone no one would go back by then .who make this decisionwho ever it was , he must be stupid , think about it pee nong look at USA the Mexican illegal all over every where . If all American people have thought like this person did, our Lao people would have not been the Lao- American.
In fact, There is a law of imigration. It is not that you want you go to Laos and stay without any rules. In addition, Lao government invites only foreign business people who would give a huge contribution to Lao development, but all.
If this person read the article in which DPM explained more careful, he would have understood this topic clearly.
Laos will never be a part of China because it's a communist country (like China), China is just an ally like Vietnam...
Russia is an ally of China because they are both communist country too...
As far as i know, China has never invaded Laos, but France, USA, Japan, Thailand did...
Maybe we need them to make our country stronger and not to be anymore a poor country...
What the occident country did for Laos...? War...? Colonization...? Dropped bomb...?
So life goes on in Laos anyway...
LOL Are you really sure that Laos must be part of China ? China is a part of Russia ? And if I stick this logic, Europe is a part of US ?
We are not in freeze war, this division isn't good for world. And we see that Lao choose a communism cause Russian prupose her help (Varsovie Pact), it will be different if it was Marshall Plan.
I'm not really agree with this, I think Laos must be open with all the world, Europe, or Afrika ... and not close in this Red communism where people arn't really free.
Past is past, Are black people say that they are slave many times ago ? Yes, and it's good ? No, see the situation of them in US, Asian people who coming after having most succes. Why ? Cause, they are closing in her past.
China is a big country, they can support and help our economy but I don't think that is better to depend of China all time ... no no.

For your information. Laos now is opened to all countries in the world regardless their political believes. Lao government always foreign investors to do business in Laos.
However, Laos has close relationship with Vietnam, China and our neighbours more than others. That's a factor for Laos to grow.
May I ask you how many do you have your close friends who you can trust? Probably you have not more than 20, if not less. That doesn't mean you are an enemy of other people, is it right? And these people are worthy for you because they are always ready when are in need. Other people may not help you as your close friends, unless you beg them many times. On top of that these people would only want to take an advantage of you, no doubt they are capitalists.
Other thing is your data are outdate. Russia is no longer communism and the Varsovie pact was over long time ago. Now there is only NATO which uses force with double standard and serves USA.
lol, Lao is open yes, but not really like we thinking.
Perhaps i choose not a good time to speak, I know thats Russia is no longer communism, like Varsovie Pact, if you see my quote, I speak about freeze War and not now.
In add, as I say, I think thats what you thinking of "open country" is not wrong ... but not really right either. I know that gov is more open than past but, you can't say that it is an open country where we can free visiting or do what you want. I know that Lao Gov even limit tourism cause they don't want that people be too influencable by falang, modern thinking or others ... I don't say if it is good or bad, but I say that Communism Gov doen't help Laos to open.
but, If you think thats Russian is open like France ... ok, I don't speak more.

Sorry but i'm not ok with your point of view, as far as i know lao government doesn't limit tourism lol... Where did you find this new..??? Now in France to demand a lao visa it's easy, just fill the form with your passport ok and you got for 3 months... Before it was 15 days then 1 month now 3 months....
Never in my life, i got a visa so easily... No questions at all... What about the USA...? Or France...? In Laos if you want to come visit France or other country in occident, lao people must have an interrogatory with their ambassade... And you said lao goverment are not open...
Before telling something you don't know, take some sure informations, please...
In Laos many things has changed, it's not closed like before, loa people can go everywhere in the world, at least they have money to buy their tiket and have the visa where they want to go...
Like other country... Same in France or USA, you have money you can go anywhere...
Now i don't want to talk about politic in France because it's worse... What about the USA..? lol
China is an ally like another south east asia country...
Occident have allies too...
Lao government are not stupid like you think...
That's my point of view, and i went already in Laos 4 times... Lived 2 years... Never had a single problem at all...
Never believe the others, if you want to know about life in Laos and it's politic, see by yourself, take sure imformations or go live there...
You will be more able to understand by yourself then to believe the others...
what kind of chinese people will come to live in or country nowaday we should strict about this because Laos gonna be discover by chinses people soon and no more Lao people. if we have china town because we want to gain some good thing from them we should bring chinese people who has education and going to have a business in Laos to provide jobs to Lao people. Not to bring a big group of chinese people who wants to make money from our country and birng it back to their country or their people.
Actually lao peoples are stupid i am also lao too ,now lao kill lao not chinese kill lao lao like money chinese give ,because chinese have lot of money lao no money .lai tai gnone keith . chinese gave money to big guy then kill small guy in country 6 millions peoples will die only couples rich guy survice
laos is laos and will remain LAOS for Ever, please, don`t worry too much about thatluang marsh and lao government knows well what it is doing, keep in mind that in laos, law about land is not like other countries : no people have right to possess a land but you have the right to buy the right to use it and when the government want to use it, you have no right to refuse, the government will relocate you in appropriated area, of course, you shall not have the same size of land and the same environment you used to have in the past but at least you have where to live. regards.
