Children of Lao Expatriates May Become Citizens According to New Law By Songrit PhonNgern 14/05/2004 Laos National Assembly, on May 12, approved the amended nationality law which, among other things, allows the children of Lao expatriates to become Lao nationals, provided one of their parents is a Lao citizen. Lao refugees who have kept in touch for seven years with the Lao embassy in the country they live in may also request their Lao nationality back. Foreigners and persons of no nationality who have lived in Laos for 10 years may also apply for Lao citizenship if they renounce their own nationality. The move to amend the nationality law is aimed at providing the opportunity for the Lao diaspora to return to Laos and participate in national development.
I did not know that Lao government would change and allow Lao who had left Laos for 3 decades to go back to re-unite Lao and re-build our mother-land like this.
If I knew, I would have continued my high level of my education. Nevertheless, I received something better than nothing. I'm sick and tired being second class in another country. However, at least I can contribute to help my mother-land. I will go Home once day not soon or later, but very near future!!
See you our country-men, women, cousins, sisters, youngsters and our far children....
Oh! Maybe for time being I need to keep in touch with Lao embassy and later I can return back to Laos for my retirement.
No matter where I fall on this earth my heart remains in Laos. I believe that Laos has the greatest potential to be developed soon. It would be better for Lao people to help Laos rather than other countries.
Laos is open up and destiny will soon come!!!! Long live Laos and Long live my people.
i hope one day, soon, Laos can accept double nationality, as many countries in the world do.
When you have 2 cultures, maybe one parent from a country and one from another, live or plan to live a few years in one of those 2 countries, then a few years in the second one, then maybe back to the first, etc...or share your time every year between the 2 countries, It's a pity to have to choose only one "official" nationality .... because in your mind, in your heart, in your culture, in your blood, you have 2!
