Laos will soon have a national science park to be used for scientific research and education.
Work has already started on the project in Borikhamxay province, which was funded by about US$448,000 from the Italian government.
The ground breaking ceremony took place on Friday and was attended by the Italian Ambassador to Laos , Mr Ignazio Di Pace, and the Provincial Governor, Mr Khamphan Philavong.
Minister to the Prime Minister's Office Professor Dr Bountiem Phissamay spoke at the ceremony and is also the Head of the Science, Technology, and Environmental Agency.
He said the project's aim was to develop scientific knowledge in the areas of biology, biodiversity and ecology. It would also be a place where items of scientific significance would be displayed, and this feature of the project could attract tourists.
The initial funding will be used to install electricity and build offices, staff dormitories, fences and a bore well. This stage of construction is expected to take one year. Additional funding will be granted to complete the project.
Prof Dr Bountiem said it was the first time the two governments had worked together on a project, although they had good diplomatic relations in previous years.
“The park will be a significant example of cooperation in scientific study and research between the two nations,” he said.
The two governments signed a memorandum of understanding in March 2004 agreeing to work together to promote socio-economic development in Laos.
What a great news! This will improve Laos' developement through educating the people about science. Hope there will be more educational related construction and less casinos and nightclubs.
