They send 4 athletes from the money they got from charity but who are all those old guys with them? How did they get there? Would it be better to use money to send the actual athletes than these old farts?

Laos hosting ASEAN olympic but can't afford to send 4....just FOUR (4) athletes to World Olympic in China. So embarassing. When the Western media report that Laos is one of the poorest country in the world I get to mad. I want Laos to escape from that. But this sort of thing only enforce that. Why didn't the people of Laos organize some fund raising to help their athlete out.

do you think that Lao government could not purchase the tickets and uniforms for the athletes? i dont think so~   because we just didn't want to spend that if any one has  any doubts  just ringing the Ministry of Finance . because the government might think that, no matter what the IOC will fund for poor country like Laos anyway..

I think you are missing the whole point here.  I don't think anyone is blaming Laos but just want to understand why only sent 4 athletes to the BIGGEST games/events of the world where Lao is getting ready to host Asean Games in coming year.

I’m with LanXang on this “Why didn't the people of Laos organize some fund raising to help their athlete out.”  Come on people, why not use some of your hard earn $ to a good cause instead of wasting all on beer shop.  I LOVE Beer Lao by the way J.

Best Regards.

While they have no hope to win, there is no point to attend too many. Please use your brain.

Anyone know if there are certain speed/time requirement for the athlete to meet before they are qualify to be able to compete in the Olympic? I believe if they are qualify then they should be able to attend.

doh  It is truly sad and embarrassing that our country could not even afford to buy track suits for 4 athletes. It is to my great shock and dismay when I read the news.  The IOC even paid for their flight tickets. When comes to think about it, it is quite shameful and I feel terrible for our team to show up in Beijing knowing that they got there because of handout grant from International Olympic Committee. Did our Laos ask out of desperation? Or out of habit? Either way is heartbreaking to me, but it is reality that we have to live with it. I would not be surprise if our country remains as a third world throughout 21st century provided that we still have a long way to go.  As we all can see, many of our people (if not most) are living in the huts today.

Civilization, advancement and development is like something that we are unable to fumble and grope along as to make correction on our shortcomings. We are as the citizens can only hope for the those days to come, so we can all claim that we are proud to be Laotian with legitimate reason. Don’t get me wrong. I am proud as a person and I am proud of our people, our culture, but the fact still holds. We are the least developed comparing to other Asian States. I recalled my trip to Laos in 1994 seeing emaciated children almost without clothes running along a dusty road and yes, it really got to me emotionally. I was mumbling; asking myself. How the government react to the condition that most of the citizens had to bear everyday.

Ok! My fellow Laotian Americans. Let us all hope and aim high for our athletes in Beijing wising them luck. Nonetheless, they represent our Laos. I am with them wholeheartedly.

For ur knowledge and education and to be open minded, Living in a hut, having food on the table every day is an advantage for human and having land to live on it is better than nothing, why don't u look at the news of other undevelop countries such as african nations, they got no food to feed their stomache and let alone no shelter to live. I think even though lao is consider poor country but we don't have scrape for food and line up for water everyday or wait for the UN to hand out food to us, at least we got land and water to cultivate for food and make a living. So be thankful, don't just put Lao down....Even though we don't have the high tech facilities or but we got the resources to make a living and river and forest to hunt for food. Woke up and grown up....Lao has forest and water compare to some African nations where they only have desert and dry climate.

dohBy your logic our Laos can never get ahead if we will stack up ourselves to the least developed countries in Africa. It’s like telling yourself that it’s ok to make $15.00/hour because there are those who make less than you.  It is ok to appreciate what is there but lacking motivation to better oneself is not quite acceptable.  You have to tell yourself that you can be somebody. I look up to someone who should be my role model, not to someone who is below me. Importantly, I don’t believe in fatalistic passivity because it will lead to stagnation. Things can only get better when you strive for it.  We should be able to discern and find ways to improve it.  I strongly believe the failures lie in those dignitaries in Vientiane government unfortunately our people suffer the consequences.  I don’t think that they are susceptible to domestic poverty, humiliation and the world perception of them. As a result, they just let things go with the flow and hope for a true miracle one day.

dohI am pretty sure that Lao president might feel a little embarass to even stand up knowing that our country is so insignificant and the fact that our athletes got there by handout grant for IOC. I truly hope when he returns to Laos, he would reminisce of things he has seen there. So, he can think harder about improving Laotian economy and create better image for the country.

You seem to be the most stupid mean that you even doubted that Lao president did not follow the rule, meaning he did not stand with other countries's leaders. If he felt embarassing he wouldn't have attended the ceremony in the first place, no doubt.

To some extent I have no surprise over you comment, you are a less educated person. The way you think is not much different with the boy with 12 years old, even not knowing that TV reporters just concentrated on their own contries's leaders. American TV reporter just concentrated on Bush, how you would have seen our president stood on the scene.

Be careful with you comment, otherwise you will be less than a stupid, if not insane person. If I were you I would shut my mouth as you are an American. You have nothing to do with Laos.

Stoping discrediting Lao people is the best thing for you to do. That is my suggestion.

Regards,
Lao patriot

dohYou are an idiot. Did you read what this guy said:

[I watch the Tv yesterday, but why i didnt see the president of Laos at the leader stage?
and didn't see the president of Lao PDR stand up  when the athletes appear like other leaders?]

dohSo, I replied to him. If it could be the reason that Lao President feel a little embarassed knowing that we are in a big powerful country surrounded by thousands and lots of things could come to his mind. Just like a poor person standing next to many wealthy people; you would feel weird. I think you are the stupid one here. Are you living in denial?

If anyone want to see camera on Lao president then they need to watch Lao TV channel ...NOt NBC ...and the person that was mad at NBC ..why? I'm sure that if you're in Laos you probably get to see the president of laos and asean leader together..NBC not responsible for not televised Lao president or lao athletes for more than 4 second ...and I didnt get to see all the leaders from each 200 countries stand up and wave at their athletes...

peace out my fellow Laotian ...
King of SamakonLao
