(KPL) The water level of the Mekong River in Vientiane Capital decreases below danger level (12.50 metres) to 11.92 metres today, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology yesterday. The water level of the Mekong River began to decrease from 13.68 metres on 16 August to 11.92 metres on 19 August and tomorrow will be at 11.22 metres. This level is below the warning level (11.50 metres, Vientiane). According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology’s forecast on 19-20 August, while the water level of the Mekong River is reported to recede below the warning stage in Luang Prabang and Vientiane Capital on 20 August, the water level will further decrease above the warning stage in the central provinces of Borikhamsay and Khammouane, and the southernmost Champassak provinces. The department expects a slight recession and the water level will return to normal, said Mrs Souvanny, a senior official of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, yesterday. This year’s water level is considered the highest of the Mekong River over the past 40 years, which flooded badly the farmland and livestock in many northern to southern provinces. In 1966 the water level of the Mekong river was just 12.70 metres in Vientiane Capital but this year it measured at 13.68 metres, considered as the highest level.
