i have been traveling all over indochina. i am fortunate to get to travel 3-4x a year, and asia has been a favorite jaunt for the last 2-3 years. i am not Lao so i will be speaking from the outside looking in.

whenever i get to chat with other tourists, i can mention 6 persons from different occasions: a british college guy from University of London, 2 french couple, a canadian, an old guy from perth australia, a girl named rachel from washington DC USA, it has always been a pleasant surprise for me that all these people cannot stop saying great things about Laos, their favorite country among the places they've visited. And the common denominator has been the Lao people!

I have never met a bunch of people who treat tourists like you do in laos. you don't look at tourists as a bunch of "walking dollars" and that makes people feel at home in your country. tourists feel welcome. you have been the kindest, gentlest people i've ever encountered in all my trips within asia. 

does it matter that your country is among the poorest in the world? maybe so. but be proud that in the hard life or struggles of your people, you have retained your soul and your humanity.

it doesn't matter what other people say - or compare your country with. be proud because despite the wealth of your other neighboring countries, most people who have experienced Laos prefer your country. if in the process, you are provoked by some people, skip those negative posts. don't let unscrupulous elements jade you. in my book, you are winners!
