I think Lao officials really overreacted this time. What do you guys think?By Kultida Samabuddhi and Achara Ashayagachat The Thai soap opera Pleng Rak Song Fang Khong (The Mekong Love Song) was yanked from Channel 7's schedule yesterday after the government of Laos complained that several scenes were inappropriate.Souvanna Phouyavong, deputy head of mission at the Lao embassy in Bangkok, said the Information and Culture Ministry asked station executives and Workpoint Entertainment Co, the show's producer, to adjust some parts of the programme that Lao officials consider "inappropriate". "After these points of concern have been fixed, the play can be put back on screen immediately," said Mr Souvanna. Starring Alexandra Bounxouei, a Lao-Bulgarian singer, and Thai actor Kanaros Sukolwat, the programme was scheduled to air at 8.30 pm yesterday, but Channel 7 and Workpoint Entertainment decided to replace it with another show. There were at least three parts of the programme that upset Lao authorities, said Mr Souvanna, including a scene where an actor gives dok champa (plumeria flower) to his loved one, but she refuses to accept it. The character is so disappointed with her response that he throws the flower into a garbage bin. Mr Souvanna said dok champa is the national flower and official symbol of Laos, and it was considered inappropriate for the actor to discard it in such a way. There was also a scene in which a character proposes to his girlfriend. In Lao tradition, this should be presided over by senior members of both families. "In the programme there were no phu yai at the ceremony and this is inappropriate from a Lao point of view," he said. Other parts of the programme could also create misperceptions about Lao women, Mr Souvanna said. He said Lao authorities did not intend to ban the programme, but would like the producer to adjust the screenplay and change some scenes that could mislead the audience about Lao culture. Foreign Ministry spokesman Kitti Wasinondh, meanwhile, said that the problem was unexpected because Channel 7 executives and Workpoint Entertainment had consulted Lao authorities from the beginning of the production process. "The TV drama is based on good intentions by the producer, who wants to boost good relations between Thai and Lao people. The producer was in discussions with Lao officials throughout the production procedure," said Mr Kitti. He lauded Channel 7 and Workpoint Entertainment for agreeing to suspend the airing. A public relations employee at Workpoint Entertainment said the programme's director, Thongchai Prasongsanti, would be responsible for making changes to satisfy Lao authorities.http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=116783
I agreed with the view of the lao diplomat Mr. Sounava, Thai TV should not create the wrong thing view related to the culture and the way of life of Lao people and should not lookdown Lao people and Dok Cham Pa is national flower of Laos....
There seems to be a littrle overreaction on the part of the Lao officials. This was a Thai soap opera and the conditions in the story apply to the Thai culture, and NOT to spite the Lao. They are what is acceptable in Thailand - by the Thai people. They were not meant to insult the Lao people. Some people need to have an open mind about things. The world is opening up to a lot of possibilities.
The majority of Laos Goverment Officers are sencitive because they lack of education, they are 30-40 years behind their neiborgh countries, just think Thai Opera is a tiny business for promotion and advertising goods to attract Lao and Thai population to buy their productions, this is hurt Lao revenue that Lao consumers whose send all $$$$$ to other countries. Man Bo La??
