I am very angry when I try to introduce myself and tell the people I just met that I come from Laos. All the reaction was that they have a lot of questions on their faces, and answered me, "Excusme, where is Laos?
I guess they are very bad in geography or have a very little information about Laos.
Usually people say, Laos is next to Thailand and Vietnam, I don't believe that they don't know even Thailand or Vietnam!! But it 's so fucccking true that most of foreign people don't know where is Laos. so, We must think how to promote our country to the World.
Why do they know well Afghanistan? Because Bin Laden and his people attacked World Trade Center.. but our Lao people no need to do that, Because it 's so infamous
As long as Laos football go to world cup in South Africa , i am so sure that the world will know where is Laos....

If you were me, what should you do?
just go ahead and educate them.. give them geography 101.. i always tell them it is this little tiny landlock country surrounded by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Myanmar.
It's not that foreigners are clueless about our country, it just that many of us really not strive to make name for ourselves and our country to be heard. Name me one or more person(people), objects, situations and(or) subjectswithin the country that are famous or known globally beside tourism?
Soon people will know more about Laos. Just give it time. Laos is still developing. Spread the love for Lao culture by playing Lao music, or telling people about Lao food. That will get them interested and word of mouth will make Laos more well known. Also it wouldn't hurt to get someone playing Lao music on some kind of late night show like Jay Leno. Then a lot of people would know.

yes!! i totally agree with you on that... words will get around and people will start to notices.
well.. with more and more press covering Laos and talking about Laos.. it will help out alot.. few example.. Matt Laur from NBC "Morning Show" did a live show from Vientaine, Laos.. Anothy Bodain from Travel Channel show.. "No Reservation" went to Laos and made 1 hour show out of it.. and few others
I think the don't really represent Lao people right on King of the Hilll. I think some real Lao people should be doing the voice overs and should tell them about Lao customs and jokes so it's actually authentic.

Well.. here is the scope on "King of The Hills". The writer of the show used to live next to laotian family.. and that's how the story begin. He incorporated into the rest of story. you guys ever that episode when Hank trying to pronounce Khan last name.... Soupannouhvong.. Sou pan no uh vong.. hahahah funny as hell

I saw the "No Reservations" episode about Laos and it was depressing to watch in my opinion. He went waaayyy out to the rural areas or something. They didn't really show the best of what Laos has to offer. The food was meager, and the people looked like they were starving. And Anthony even seemed depressed throughout the whole show. But it did open my eyes to how life is for a lot of people over there, and I would like to help improve their lives someday after I graduate and start making 100k+ a year.
Maribelle, good luck with your educations hopefuly you will help our people out when you're making alot of money. I am rooting for you all the way. You look like a good role model for our people, hopefuly you will make their come true. What are you major in - mind if I asked?
BTW, I saw the show too and it was very depressing to watch - it was more of the US and Lao history than the foods show.
true..... he even admits it at the end of show .. all of his shows are kindda crazy.. getting drunk, eating wierd foods and talks some smacks. but, the episode that he filmed in Laos was totally opposite... the first time I saw the other side of Anthony.. he is humble and sad at times.. he saw what the American did to Laos and many people still suffering from it..
No one to blame!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you just stop and think a little bit, you will know the reason. I am now used to the question "where is Laos?" when I try to introduce it. Personally, I came to realize that if they just know that a country called "Laos" exists in this globe, that's more than enough. It is because they are more than 190 countries recognized to exist in this world. I don't expect them to know about its exact location, well if they do, I am really glad though. On the othert hand, if there is one person from a country called "Panama", Do you think you are able to tell, perhaps some of you are, that it is bordered by CostaRica and Colombia? The way to introduce our country lies in the hand of you, mine and all people who consider themselves as Lao. So, just try our best!!!!!!!

if you're talking about loy & geung, linda lana etc i know them. they're my sister's friends.
Have you ever seen a small map? It is 1 squarefoot long and has one page and you can fold it and keep it in your pocket. When somebody want to know Laos you show them the map of Laos with China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar surrounding it. That is very easy to show Laos.
