Laos: Chinese Firms Will Not Develop That Luang Marshland By Dara Baccam 12/08/2008
That Luang marshland development plan
Lao authorities say they will not be able to allocate lands in the That Luang marshland to Chinese companies to develop into a new urban and commercial center, because only 20% of the promised 1,000 hectares have been acquired so far. Local residents and land owners refuse to relocate because the government is not able to provide them enough compensation.
The government had promised the lands to Chinese New stadium being built companies in exchange for the new stadium and sports facilities they are building at KM 18 on Route 13 South, which will be used for the 25th SEA Games that Laos will be hosting at the end of 2009.
So the government is still obligated to look for new lands for the Chinese. Officials have reportedly been looking at areas adjacent to the new sports facilities in Saythani district and areas next to the Tha Nalaeng train station in Dongphosy village, Hadsayfong district. The Chinese companies expect to spend about 58 million dollars on the sports facilities they're building for Laos, and plan to invest more than $88 millions to develop the lands they will receive in return for building the sports complex. The development is expected to be completed by the end of 2010, in time for the commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the founding of the capital city of Vientiane. Listen to Songrit's report for more details in Lao.
we do know that yet, there is a topic about this issue yet.
Maybe it's better to preserve the marsh and locate the project in another place. Near Ban Dongphosy? why not, there is a lot of free land covered by forest (i love forest, but maybe 15 km from the center of vientiane is not the best place for forest preservation... land is too rare).... but not too close to the train station please, or it won't be close to my land, it will be ON my land!!!!!! I definitly cannot accept that. I need this well located land for the day i'll live in Laos.
I say the Lao Government should build it on paris_vientiane's lands. I mean, who care about the French anyway. After all the French at one time illegally occupied our land and never pay any compensation for it. I think it is a fair game with the French. LOL
Satou satou it is a damn good news for me. So that I can live in a normal life again. My land is safe from a time being. I hope those people who want to take my land away won't come back. Please leave us the poor people in peace. It is only a block of land we own from the generation I am so much happy with the news.

Eta Rap, I understand why it took you that long to share with us your anxiety and concern, but finally you blurted out the long-overdue excitement. I want to be the first person to share this joyful moment with you. I am sure you aren’t the only one who feels at ease after learning the “That Luang marshaland development project was cancelled.” And one of the reasons the local residents and land owners refused to relocate was because of the insufficient compensation by the government in which I had mentioned that a few times in my other posts.
you guy know what? the project is dead bc buing tha luang is not just buing. all chiness buget can make buing thatluang to be land before they buil the building. they try so hard but can not file the lake. how many monks from many wat come to pray to chant to ask but nothing happen. like they say '' bor sua ya lop luu" there are big snak living in this buing. like old poeple call nak''.pha yak ''
Does the forests near Ban dongphosy or near the future stadium (see on google earth) belong to the state, or are they private?
If they belong to the state, they can build their project there. Tjose places are good locations . But they reasonably cannot takeh private lands.... those lands are too important for local people (they use it for living, working...), and as they are not far from Vientiane, their value is now very high and will be certainely higher in the future.... so it's near imposible to imagine acceptable compensation for the owners who could loose those lands.... too expensive or constraintfull.
Anyway, i hope this project can be acheived, but only on public land and with good regulation, planification and accompaniment by lao autorities. In those conditions, it can bring many benefits for everyone.
