Vietnam's up-river neighbor, Laos, has been experiencing a resurgence in tourism, but it still deals in one of the worst currencies in the world. A single U.S. dollar will buy you 8,640.75 kip.
Laos home to the Indochinese tiger, the giant guar, the Asian elephant and a thriving Opium trade.

This currencies comparison is not accurate. Laos and Vietnam money may be low, but the two countries are very stable, even in a tought encomic times. I think Laos and Vietnam will weather the storm of the encomic crisis better than Thailand.
The two countries came from a have not. Any gain in Laos and Vietnam economic is a bonus and not a step backward.
if you compare just along the few last years, it's better to own kips rather than US$
a few years ago you 1US$ is 10000 kips, now it's only 8500 kips. Kip become stronger every year.
Moreover, interest rates are much higher in kip: put your kips in a lao bank and you can get more than +10% per year (safe investment), maybe 14%/year if you engage for 2 years
How much in an américan bank with US£ (fore 100% safe investment?)
right PV, see in vietnam, they use the dong currency and they are proud to use it, they also have very small denominations too, the most important thing is vietnam is no more a poor country... the question is that do we have enough of these called worst curency ? it will be good to own 1000 us dollars but it is not bad to own ten millions of lak ( lao kip ).
try & exchange Lao kip banknotes in other countries...see how many banks are willing to accept them...there's a reason why tourists are warned to ensure that they use up all their Lao kip before leaving Laos, unless they want to keep the banknotes as souvenirs...
