smileum8.gif   I am more or less proud of our motherland (Laos)-The Land of 1 Million Elephants.

It seems to me that Laos has learned a crucial lesson in increasing international integration as the country gets to experience a taste of economic advancement.  I do not believe that self-isolation would ever be an option for Laos again.  Laos understands it fully well and elucidation is not needed because Laos realized only openness to the outside world would Laos ever gets a chance of stepping out of the least developed country. By ensuring a constant trade with other nations, Laos would obtain a meaningful and a sustainable improvement in people’s lives leading to significant opportunities for human development as well. But economic advancement also brings possibility of widening the existing inequalities between people in the urban and those who live in the rural areas.

I believe Laos still lacks sufficient transportation throughout the country and the need for concerted effort from the government and nongovernment institutions should be emphasized in order to alleviate this great difficulty. Laos cannot solely depend on the market and trade alone to ensure equitably distribution of benefits. In combating poverty and promoting human development, Laos needs to build a solid trading regime according to a current global level.  Our motherland must have perseverance, initiation and implementation of the strategic measures to promote economic diversification in various sectors: such as, agriculture, tourism, garments and manufacturing.  The increase in education and vocational training are equally important. Furthermore, Laos needs to identify what sectors would generate employment opportunities for the rural poor especially the women and the young.

We need transparent mechanism to properly manage export revenues and other public expenditure which I am sure Laos is making progress in this field. This is the golden opportunity for the government to lay down foundations and take full advantages of the new regional as well as global trade. It has been overtly seen throughout the years that foreign investments are on the rise in Laos and this is good news for our people.  For instance, the new technology along with new ideas and the flow of investments are becoming a crucial engine of economic growth.  This confluence is going to have a drastic social change and a rise in standards of living for many Laotians.  The recent increase in life expectancy itself has been manifested. Give Laos a chance. We all know only hard work would entail success.
