Can Lao in the US speak Lao?

i think they understand Lao and can speak a little, it depends on parent and how regular the parent speak Lao to them at home

it depends if your parents speak to you in lao

my parents always spoke lao to me when i was young.
and I was exposed to the language when I went to Laos when I was young
I went there twice

i remember my aunt teaching me a lot

as far as reading/writing lao

i am better at reading than I am at writing.
i can read very good though.

It's up to their parents to teach their kids to ( wao) Lao.I 've seen some Parents worry so much about their kids don't speak fluence English, and they talk them in English at Home. Even they themselfs Speak a little English but they still tried hard. this is my personal opinion if the kids were born here or grew-up here I would not worry about this.Because they were born here or grew-up here and they will eventually Speak English for sure". otherwise they will go around the Downtown collected Cans...Ha,Ha, Ha..Right, I'm not joking;

We left Laos 1980 and was in Nongkhai Camp for 6 months. I'm still struggling adjusting to everyday life in the U.S.. My english sucks and been cleaning toilets for so many years now. I should have listen to my parents when they used to preach about going to school and study. Now, i'm stuck working as janitor cry

but it pays the bills.

let me help you on that, i m an expert on cleaning toilet. it's true, it pays the bills and i m still doing it. don't make money, but a living. sorry for myself, some will do better life and happy to see ppl of our ethnic get so far in the their life. i don't regret, bcoz i hope my kids will do better. that is all important. my kids don't know world lao. it's hard for me to teach them. we used to live where it no lao ppl at all.

Well, most kids that born here are like that. Alot of them doesn't want to speaks lao in front of their friends too. It starts from parents, they have to reinforce it often. Both of my niece and nephew do speaks/understand lao. It is easier for them to understand then saying it out in lao words. Once they get little older, I will take them back to Laos and show them.. this is Laos.

I heard a story about Tiger Wood and his mother. She tried to speak to him in Thai but it ended up confusing him and had a problem speaking so the doctor told the mother to just stick with one language and it worked so Tiger Wood now can't speak or even understand Thai so he is a 100% american.

another story is a Thai mother who live in Thailand she is very rich so she hired an English native speaker nurse and the kid ended up not speaking anything for years but now can speak Thai and English.

So don't put the Lao people down if the Lao Kids in Laos today have the opportunity , I believe they could do as good as any nation on earth. I guess , you and I problely disagreed with each other over some topics. You are lucky that your parents are rich and are able to sent you to study in the United States.

I agree with the upon statement. It's up to their parents to teach them to speak and also to read & write. When I was in elementary school, I tried to teach myself how to read & write pasa lao with the help of my uncle. It seemed like he was more interested in drinking beers with his friends than helping me. I was frustrated and eventually gave up. My older cousin (who had some early schooling in laos) is the only person who can read & write ( a little bit) in pasa lao. Maybe next time when I go back to Laos, I will hire a tutor.

Does it matter?

I can read and speak Lao eventhough I had only 1 year of schooling in Laos.

The only way for little kids to learn to speak the language is to speak to them in Lao at home and when they go to school they can learn to speak English with the kids in at school.

But i also think anyone can lern any language if there is a teacher to teach them. I just saw a Black girl speaking Korean.

Lao is not not hard to speak! So, stop with that excuse my brother. English is much harder to speak and learn. There is a group of people in Lao and Vietname that speak a language known as Arem. They live in the province of Khammoaun on the border of Laos and Vietnam. There are 20 fluent speakers out of 500 from census taken in 1995. When the last speaker of these language die what will they be call? Laotian or Vietnamese?

Maybe they are still Arem but they just can't speak their own language.
