Even if they were on welfare, their living standards are undeniably way higher than many of you domestic Laotians. They have access to all the basic needs that so many of you can only dream of. There should be no need for you to mock them. They have supported their families in Laos by sending home some money especially in the 80s when the commie’s economic policy failed and those poor Laotians also wished they had relatives in the West. You are an ignorant dimwit. You think that I don’t know about life in Laos? Most of my families are still living there. Hey guys there is nothing wrong with receiving food stamps to help people to start a new life. Besides it just temporary just like for any nationality. What is wrong is to dare question its purpose and to lack self confidence that you give a downcast look to those who are benefiting from this program. In fact, whether you or not you are at the receiving end you should not feel insecure or helpless because its one way of giving you a good head start. The problem will come if after the time that the support ended and you still have not made personal effort to improve your life status then... you are indeed dumb!

You are a fool for even raising this question because its not only Lao who benefit from this program. Other nationalilties as well.

My friend in the US I hope you will still reconsider supporting the initiatives of fellows in Lao. Lao should never criticize another Lao especially in cyberspace where anybody can read this. Lao should support Lao, any Lao's success whether abroad or in the native land adds to the pride of Laos!

Well said brother!!!! I know for fact that without foodstamps and welfare checks our family probably be out on the streets. My parents didn't know a word of english and neither did I. We came along way since then and I'm sure most of Laotian whom settling in the U.S. or Canada will say the same.

I have that feeling too. Normally,Laos people don't say thing like that to each other. It could be Hmong people do this because Thai sent them back home,Viet. in Laos are unfriendly to them. I stumbled upon this website while surfing about the 2th ASEAN Games in which I desire to volunteer. I have known and develped many Lao friends, some ordinary people, some working with the government. They are Lao who only do their job and keep hardwork so their lives are "gradually" improving and the future looks promising for them... unlike some colleagues who instantly become richer because of corruption. They are not among the rotten tomatoes.

I though this website is good to learn more about the Lao psyche, culture, history and traditions. But I was a bit disappointed when I read some of the negative exchanges between Lao nork and Lao nai. It seems some do not respect their origin. Or it could be right that maybe it a non-Lao who are posting the negative comments just to irate and make Lao people fight each other.

I hope you would be wiser in what you are posting here because some comments could give disgrace to your country and will create negative impression among falang to Laos in general. The fact that this is linked with the SEA Games website makes you more exposed and vulnerable from outsiders scrutiny.

Please consider this site as a portal for other people to know about Laos. So you better make good impression so others will not find this site silly.

I still believe that generally Lao people are very polite, humble and smart. You have a very beautiful country and culture, you have to be proud of it.

I work for a living now, i love to on welfare but the US goverment told me it's time for you to go get a job and work to support yourself. being on welfare is great, no work only play and lay back.

What are you thinking there many people in America who have been here for than 3-4 centuries. they are still in the program. this is America, if you are so jaleous then get in. America is rich anr not poor very poor like Laos

Because you are lazy on welfare if you sick you go hopital they will ask you what life insurance do you have ? if you answer welfare insurance you prepare to die coz they hate welfare peoples they will put you on sleeeeeepppp forever (DEAD) like animal is true body

We left Laos with empty hands and stayed in refugees camp.
fortunately many countries such as :USA France Australia
Canada etc..gave us chances ,it's means new life for us,for those who work hard enough there are plenty of opportunities .many are doing quiet well .I was on unemployment benefit for 3 month
I now worked for more than 20yrs and paid taxes same rate as other citizen in the country .Most of Lao I known here are
working,and work hard to support the family both here and back in Laos.but most important is "FREEDOM" The thing we were looking for when we decided to leave the country.
