What do you think about the security situation in Vientiane?

Crimes such as bag snatching and robbery are on the rise in Vientiane. An increasingly unsafe society creates concerns for residents of Vientiane and presents a poor image of the nation to visitors.

To all, please be careful

No place on earth is safe. I think Laos PDR poolice officials are working hard to stop those crimes. Before they take action, residents should not:
1. Wear too much expensive jewelry.
2. Go out at night a lone.
3. Open doors or windows at night.

It is impossible for many countries to be as safe as you'd like it to be.  For a country that visited by many tourist will have some crime that's for sure. At the present Laos is still conceder the safest country to travel , but remember there are many foreigners who are currently living in Laos also so I'm not a bit surprise about the change in condition of Laos

I am sure, Vientiane is not a dangerous place.

I do agree that more tourists and economies boom always result increasing in climes and robberies.

Don’t tell me that in developed countries, which have modern and advance security systems they don’t have crime and robberies.

This question is from the Streetwise column, Vientianetimes newspaper.
If Vientiane is not dangerous, they will not publish it.

Yes safer than many places but it could be much better, especially at night.

Good security at the markets, but at night all the police go  home to sleep. Better if they had a night shift to work the places where people hang out at night. Vientiane is realy a very small town. I hope the video cameras  have an affect, Lao people in general aren't a violent people.

Most crime I see is domestic crime if you know what I mean.

This is the buddhist country. Should be peaceful isn't it?

Anyway, compare to Vietnam crimination , we are still not too dangerous.

Lao should install CCTV in every cornor of the main cities like in Bangkok, Thailand that they have CCTV more than 30,000 CCTVs so no need police go out so just watch from the monitor at the station. If something happen at least we get the thift picture and scare to the thift also. And also if somebody not respect the driving on the street so we can snap their picture and just send the bill + picture & details so they can not say anything that they didn't do anything wrong but in the picture so the speed and incident details

Lao should have more spot lighting on the streets at night b'cos it can help to prevent robbery at first.

It is true, living in Vientiane is not safe as before......
The dangerous one is teenage who are Drug Addicted, they rob, steal and conduct several type of crimes to get money for buying the pills. They can do other things else like rapping and killing.

ofcoz no where on earth can avoid this thing, but we wish it could be minimized as much as possible, esp. when it happens in our country.

Vientiane Time Newspaper should look further into these crimes to see the nationalities of the robbers who committed this kind of crimes? I had a feeling that this certain group have intentions to sabotage Sea Games in Laos.  This their way of making sure to have less tourists in Laos for Sea Game.
