Laos versus Developed countries: is it comparable?

I read many topics in samakomlao talking about Laotian today, certain porportion of comments that what exist in Laos Today is less developed, not so good, low-tech, not wise...... compare to other developed countries where they are living. Some expected Laos to be like those. I personally do not agree with that, because if you stand on the side of Developer not Critics, you will she there are so many complicated obstrucles behind.

By the way, Do you think it is comparable?

Your questions was unclear I can only understand the last sentence, and my answer for your last question is Laos is still far from being comparable to the developed countries.

Well said...  Laos still missing alot different ingredients in order to compare to most of developed countries.  For example, clean water, clean air,  and sewage/sanitation problems are some of the main thing on the list.  Without fixing those items, Laos can't really make any comparison to anyone.

Which developed country you want to compare with? Japan? Australia? USA? Canada? New Zealand? France? UK? Italy?.....Laos is incomparable with any developed country, even with emerging and developing country like Vietname, Thailand, Cambodia...
Let's compare Laos with underdeveloped countries( Myanmar, Bhutan, Bungladesh, Kiribati, Nepal, Samoa, solomon island, Tavalu, Vanautu). I think Laos is slighly on the top of thembiggrin

You have missed read the question on the topic above, it did not mention any thing about a comparison of Laos to an underdeveloped countries

, but  to a more developed countries and since you think that we're comparable to those developed countries I believed you are delusional.

I think the question above asking

Why Lao people abroad who live in developed countries, when it comes to their idea in Samakomlao webboard, it always  less developed, not so good, low-tech, not wise like the places they live in.

I think because their good brains are washed by america, so they have nothing good to say to Laos

If you think our good brains are  washed here in America ? That's a laugh I think it is more like you can't handle the truth and you don't want to try harder to better your skills .  This is the reason why Laos will face a lot  of problems for their economy growth .

I think the person who started this topic used wrong word. Laos is the name of the country, Laotians is the name of people. So, we all here have communication problem. But it's good to practice English here anyway, do you think so? lolz

dont be afraid to take what is beautiful and show it to the world.
the people and culture of the lao are beautiful.
dont be afraid.

nothing can compare to the lao, the people and country, a majestic tradition
that took hundreds if not thousands of years in the making.
dont be afraid.

p.s. there are things which should not be compared.
it's not logical to compare technology and modern advances when
laos is yet to achieve such things yes?

To my understanding I think the topic's owner was asking visitor/member to compare Loas with the countries that are more developed so I think it is fair to say that Laos is incomparable at the present time , because of many circumstances .

Oh Brother you just can't look at the (GDP-Chart above) and compare the GDP with other Countries. you really think Whoever has the highest GDP number mean that, That country have better economics to you !!!! Not so, Let me pick one of the country that has the lowest GDP in the Chart ok. For Example: Brunei has the lowest GDP right!!  Brunei Trade Organisation: APEC, ASEAN,WTO,
GDP$19.683Billions(2008) GDP=Percapital-$50.790 (est.2007)

Main Industries: Petroleum, Petroleum Refining, Liquefied Natural Gas, Construction.  and Their Exports about $7.7Billions,     BRUNEI  is very Small and Wealthy Country in South-East Asia.  and Rule by a Sultan Brunei (Hassanal Bolkiah.) and a few years ago He was the Richest Man on Earth Untill Bill Gate and Werrent Buffet beat him out, and all Brunei citizens have access to free healthcare. and Brunei's Darussalam  was ranked Fourth in the Asia Pacific region. and Second in ASEN after Singapore. Now i would like Brother who post this comment compare our belove country (Laos) to one of these countries, i would love to see the Statistic of our Country when compare to  other countries. Don't guess me i do not look down on our belove country and my Blood Birth place. But to Compare to other. we still behind, Except Combodia, and Burma.

Laos is developing, gradually yes but developing. Many people are now familiar with Laos and most likely after the SEA Games It will make a niche in this modern world. But it depends how Laos chose to develop. Right now many structures are constructed in laos especially in places frequented by tourists, but I noticed that people are building as they like. It seems there is no guidelines. I think Laos need to come up with a good city planning. I like the way Cambodia developed Seam Reap. Roads are wide, hotels and other buildings have designs that fit the historical background of the province. Its looking like a city and better than the capital city. There is harmony and not so overdone mix of modern and history facade. Laos landscape though is more beautiful that is why the government should make sure to keep its natural beauty while moving on to prosperity.

A developing country is that country which has not relatively low standard of living, an undeveloped industrial base, and a moderate to low Human Development Index (HDI) score and per capita income, but is in a phase of economic development. Usually all countries which are neither a developed country nor a failed state are classified as developing countries.
The standard of living refers to the quality and quantity of goods and services available to people and the way these services and goods are distributed within a population. It is generally measured by standards such as income inequality, poverty rate, real (i.e. inflation adjusted) income per person. Other measures such as access and quality of health care, educational standards and social rights are often used too. Examples are access to certain goods (such as number of refrigerators per 1000 people), or measures of health such as life expectancy. It is the ease by which people living in a country are able to satisfy their wants.

Industrialisation (also spelled Industrialization) or an Industrial Revolution is a process of social and economic change whereby a human group is transformed from a pre-industrial society (an economy where the amount of capital accumulated per capita is low) to an industrial one (a fully developed capitalist economy). It is a part of wider modernisation process, where this social and economic change is closely related with technological innovation, particularly the development of large-scale energy and metallurgy production. Industrialisation also introduces some form of philosophical change, or to a different attitude in the perception of nature.
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, and standard of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to determine and indicate whether a country is a developed, developing, or underdeveloped country and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life.

Per capita income means how much each individual receives, in monetary terms, of the yearly income that is generated in their country through productive activities. That is what each citizen would receive if the yearly income generated by a country from its productive activities were divided equally among everyone. Per capita income is usually reported in units of currency per year. While per capita income reflects gross national product per capita income when comparing nations, it is also used to compare municipalities within nations. When determining the per capita income of a community, however, it is not economic activity that is divided by the population, but the total personal income.

I agree with you.
Since we still have natural beauty that some other places dont have.
Following industrialization path is acceptable, but there should not be heavily.
Natural conservation and eco-tourism can bring Laos dual development (economic and environtment friendly)

Well, to do that we just need supper clever human resources.

Whether is Japan, America or Germany or whatever! Have you ever heard that they will not build any poisons in their country that mean they got o invest and build up many toxic waste in poor country instead of making it in the country. They build some factory in Lao they don't care about evironment coz it's not their country.

UK also selfish and ugly while his front side is so high class and looks good in all things but behind his back is full of toxic and smelly. UK is an island and no place to throw away the waste from their daily using it everyday (Once they use it, they throw away and they will not use it again due to the hygenic) and when they have no place to throw it they just start to look at some place to throw such like in poor country. They give or donate lots of money to the poor country or some small exchange trade to these poor country with the deal just about to have some space to throw they toxic waste in the poor country who has plenty of land space.

I don't think Britain will dump toxic waste in Laos like they did in Brazil and Ghana because our leaders never let them do so.

as far as i read in the previous comments from other members and anonymous regarding to Laos's developments. people are concerned about the corruption in Laos and concerned about the sustainable development in Laos, it seems that no lots people compared Laos to other developed countries such as why dont we have a subway in vientiane? why don't we have a tall building in vientiane or blabla?

To compare things with other things or laos with other countries is that how we human learn to develop ouselves, the country and so on.

That is the reality that laos is a less or underdeveloped country, but on the ways to make it better.

When we see develpoed countries in the world  like usa, japan eu countries they have faced the same problems when they develop their countries.

For us is the same. we need time, capitals, a lot of capitals and the most importest things is that we need you all as educated and qualified persons.

Beside all of the things you've mentioned, Laotians must be more open minded & willingness to make the change instead of clinging to the old dated ideas.
Last, a risk taker also.

This topic has been discussed to death, I don't see how anybody with a reasonable level of coherence is still asking questions like this. It seems like people are asking questions they know the answers to over and over and over.

Spend about an hour reading about Lao history, economy, and government on a reputable site, and you will find the answers to your questions and why Laos is in the situation it is in today.
