(KPL) The Lao government plans to grow rubber trees on 250,000 hectares by 2010 with a hope to produce rubber for export and a key for poverty reduction.
The chief of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry?s Cabinet, Mr. Bounthong Bouahoon said that the government was currently promoting the rubber tree plantation in nine provinces of Laos, which the largest plantations are concentrating in the southern provinces of Saravane, Champassak and Attapeu, representing 40 per cent.
Other plantations are in the central provinces of Borikhamsay, Khammouane and Savannakhet and three northern provinces of Luang Namtha, Oudomsay and Bokeo. Last year, rubber trees were planted on 150,000 hectares nationwide, said, Mr. Bounthong.
The demand for rubber products is high on the world market, which tends to see a rise year on year.
The annual global consumption volume of rubber products is expected to be 31.5 million tonnes by 2020.
there are lands to be used in Laos, there is nothing that the local can do to make that land becomes valuable, this is what the government's thought. as far as the local are concerned, some probably get a job and increase the income, but more than half of local don't satisfy with the project, because the project is destroying the ecosystem ,destroying the source of food of local and some don't get that much labor payment even if work more than 8 hours per day.

Viet. make money again. Poor Laotian. Where all of my Laotian men?
This project will destroy the ecosystem and livelihood of the villagers. Yes, it will provide jobs with slave labor with very low pay, it will not lift Lao people from porverty. We can learn from Chiquita banana platation in Columbia, it make the enterprise rich such Chaquita family, few millions$ for the gervernment and yes thousands of jobs, but not to mention how much environtment it destroys and lifes been kill. And plantation in Thailand how many people been sold the the platation for their labor and killed. my opion, not worth it... let look at another opportunities...stick with tourism, mining, and hydro electric dams baby!
you can say that the majority of land use is agricultural. gov't and companies who want to build something new require the use of farm land.
so it seems that most projects like expanding the airports, public dams, hotels like the dong chen, and this rubber plantation tree project will sometimes affect those who lives depend on the land.
and those who are affected by modernization or expropriation are not necessary well-off yes?
i like to think projects that benefit laos in general will not always cause people to lost their livelihood, that there is an attempt to minimize the effects of expropriation.
if you do it right, land use does not necessary mean off limits when it comes to modernization yes?
Is this a good idea to reduce poverty? Ummmm.... No. Not only eco-system will be damaged, but also time consuming, lots of opportunity cost. In short, this is not sustainable way of development. I would love to see cost-benefit analysis of these projects.
Thank you Brotherthai, Thanks for your recommendation. we, lao really appreciate. again. THANKS. and i wish you and all muslim-thai brothers in 3 southern provinces live Happily and peacefully Ok.
