Opium-soaked wood chips seized at O'Hare

I hope this will come to the attention of Lao authorities to make some investigation. It wouldn't be good for the image of Laos when its just starting to get international recognition.

CHICAGO - A drug-sniffing dog named Rambo has uncovered more than 10 pounds of opium-saturated wood chips and leaves in a package at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the parcel was found Tuesday at the airport's foreign mail facility.

The wood chips and leaves were found in 29 plastic bags. Officers say they tested positive for opiates.

The parcel was shipped from Laos and headed to a residence in St. Paul, Minn. It was marked "Lao Traditional Medicines."

The border protection agency says that since September, officers at the foreign mail facility have made more than 60 opium seizures weighing a total of 300 pounds.

The opium has been found in bars of soap, in twigs and leaves and in bottles of lotion.

Great...gonna get more scrutiny by Customs now coming back each year. Time-consuming enough bringing dried shrimp and squid through.

depends on the weight of the actual opiate in the chips, not the weight of the chips. I'd think the opium must have been at least partialy processed.  how would you mix raw opium with wood chips? Big stinky black mess with chips.

Raw opium was going for around $1000 a kilo in countryside in Laos. Up 300%! Many metal roofs on houses of Lao Seung.

If it is heading to St. Paul, almost 100% sure is going to a hmong.  This is not the first time the hmong from MN area get caught with opium.

I remember few years ago, the opium was stuff inside the casket and was on its way to a hmong family in St. Paul area also.  The excuse from those people was, their grandparent needs to be buried in this type of wood casket from laos.

LOL! wow I'm from Minneapolis and St.Paul is next to each other. I know there's alot of news about hmong smuggling opium for the purpose of medicine and shaman religion. Plus St.Paul MN is like the capital of hmong since it hold a more dense concentration of hmong refugee and hmong immigrate during the vietnam war. Plus there is so many hmong here in Minnesota and Wisconsin that they end up killing each other who's bigger then who up here LOL!!!!!!! I know alot crazy stories here about them, I hope our people will not do this to our own since All laotian even some hmong still have laolao in them. :)

A few months back,  a Hmong couple from Fresno, CA did the same and got caught too.    Good job American authority.   Meaning Hmong people still can't break their habbit.

Watches are a beautiful thing. Certainly, they tell us the time - but aren't they so much more than that? replicas watches Through their watches, a person can express so much, and in a way it could be said:replicas watches Show me your watch and I'll tell you who you are.
