Chinese investors plan to build biggest paper mill in Laos !!!

(KPL) A group of Chinese businessmen is carrying out a feasibility study on building the biggest paper mill in Laos to be located in the central province of Savannakhet.
During their visit to Savannakhet province, the directors of Sun company of China said they wanted to plant industrial trees and establish a paper mill.

Mr Chitpasong, an official of the Investment and Planning Office of Savannakhet Province, disclosed last Friday that the Sun Company wanted to lease more than 500 hectares for building the mill and 100 hectares to grow the acacia tree in Phin district, Savannakhet province. He added that their proposal had been forwarded to the Ministry of Investment and Planning for consideration.?If this company gets the green light then the construction of the paper mill will start and when in operation it would provide employment for 2,500 workers. After that it will plant the acacia trees,? said Mr Chitpasong.

He also said that this could be the biggest paper mill in the country, producing cardboard boxes and various types of paper.

Meanwhile, the Lao government has been pitching to investors to build their industrial and service facilities in the Savan-Seno Special Economic Zone, established in 2004, added Mr Chitpasong.

Located on the outskirts of Savannakhet, opposite Mukdahan Province of Thailand, he said it is part of the government?s effort to establish a whole range of industries, besides manufacturing plants, such as hotels, golf courses, retirement village for affluent retirees, etc.

Up to date, the investment and planning official disclosed that 19 domestic and foreign projects had entered Savannakhet Province and are either coming on stream or are already at the stage of production.

For example, he said that a sugar plant of Mitr Phol Sugar Corporation Ltd, with its production base in Savannakhet province, has invested US$22.5 million in a sugar production facility, US$17.5 million to build a sugar mill and US $5 million on land improvement and an irrigation system.

Elaborating on the Lao Mitr Phol Sugar Plant Corporation Ltd, he said, it has a licence on land concession for establishing a sugar plant and sugar cane plantation in Savannakhet province.

This plant, Mr Chitpasong said, needs at least 500,000 tonnes of raw sugar cane per year to enable it to produce 60,000 tonnes of refined sugar.

?The Lao Mitr Sugar Company has already grown sugarcane on 5,000 hectares out of a total area of 10,000 hectares of land concession,? said the planning and investment official.

At the same time, the company got local people to plant sugarcanes on 1,500 hectares of land under the contract farming scheme and they produced one million tonnes of raw sugar cane per year, added Mr Chitpasong.

One of the serious negative consequences of the People's Republic of China's rapid industrial development has been increased pollution, smog, and degradation of natural resources. Much solid waste is not properly disposed of. Water pollution is a source of health problems across the country.
one of the solution is move industrial elsewhere.

Do you know what is the raw material to make paper???? I hope Laos will not sacrifice all ite trees and rainforest for the sake of development... I am so afraid of these words "BIGGEST PAPER MILL".... biggets paper mill requiring biggest supply of trees and pulps to make those paper.... Oh I have to go back to Laos now while I still have the chance to see all those greens... the scenic landscape and the smog-free skyline. I pity all those wildanimals and ethnic minority groups that will be displaced.

the government have to look more closely about land concession for paper mill, paper pulp , every kind of paper... it affects seriously the environment, the forest come first, after that the huge amount of rotten water from the factory deversed to the clear water of the rivers arround the factory

IF LAO GOVERNMENT AGREE TO THIS PROJECT ITS LIKE PUTTING A DEATH SENTENCE TO LAO FORESTS. IN LESS THAN 10 YEARS ALL THOSE WONDERFUL "GREENS" WILL BE GONE AND LAOS WILL BE LEFT WITH NOTHING BUT WASTE AND DEBRIS. NO ONE WILL BE INTERESTED TO COME TO LAOS ANYMORE. CHINESE ARE VERY EXPLOITATIVE, THEY HAVE NOT CARE ABOUT ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH, OR LIFE. THEY WILL SUCK EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO SATISFY THEIR HUNGER FOR MONEY AND DEVELOPMENT. THEY ARE TAKING ALL THE MINERALS AND BLACK SAND IN MY COUNTRY AND TEHY DO IT AT NIGHT. NOW THE FAMERS ARE SUFFERING BECAUSE SAL****ER NOW PENETRATES THE RIVER SYSTEM AND ALL THAT ARE PLANT THERE ARE DYIONG DUE TO SALTY IRRIGATION WATER. THAT'S AN EXAMPLE OF HOW DUBIOUS THEY ARE. DONTLET IT HAPPEN TO YOU!!!

That means they will help us to destroy more forest in Laos??? Why?

And what percentage level Gov will impose the tax on that?

One more thing that is not related to this topic is about mining tax...does anyone know what % does our country recieve? in Australian new legislation will be 40% on mining, which I think it is reasonable because natural resouces are growing, when it finished, it just finish...and that is not fair for next generations that they can not share this benefits.

i hope this story is a hoax, for i would not want to feel the anger among everyone.

if not, someone needs to sent all the pdr leadership to
one of those tree stripped countries like Haiti.
maybe they can see first hand what hell looks like for a country without sustainable forestry.confuse

allowing China access to your forestry, the giant hungry China economy will ravage your innocent land.
your hillside towns will be buried by landslides and
China will lay waste to the forest land and everything else you have worked so hard to provide for your 6 million population.confuse

there will be no illusion about what can happen when laos is without trees,
paradise will be lost.

have a nice day.
