More bone friendship with our big brother, the longer we live in poverty.

September 2, 2009

Asian Week

A forgotten land

Laos is a beautiful country; unlike neighboring Thailand, it remains relatively unspoilt by tourism and development. The people are warm and friendly, and genuinely pleased to welcome you into their country and into their homes.

Despite its diminutive size, Laos is bursting at the seams with incredible sights and experiences: there is literally something for everyone. From the laid back charm of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, to the wild parties and tubing in Vang Viang. For the nature lovers and adrenaline junkies, Laos’ forests and caves are stunning and well preserved, with a higher percentage of protected land than any other South East Asian country. For sun seekers the unique Four Thousand Islands that appear in the Mekong during the dry season offer a beach experience like no other. And for gastronomic travelers, Laos’s capital Vientiane punches above its weight in the international restaurant scene.

But look past the incredible scenery and hospitality, stumble slightly from the tourist trail, and another picture emerges: a picture of poverty.
Poverty in Laos
  • Laos has the lowest UNDP human development index of all South East Asia.
  • 50% of children suffer from malnourishment, and 40% exhibit stunted growth.
  • 27% of people live below $1 a day; 75% of people live with less than $2.
  • Education remains poor; the Laos government allocation for education is among the lowest in the world.
  • In rural areas, almost two fifths of people have no access to safe drinking water.
  • Laos is the most bombed country in the world, and unexploded ordinance remains a huge threat. The Mines Advisory Group suggests that over 78 million unexploded sub-munitions remain in Laos.

I truly hope you are just being humorous to make such comments; otherwise, you must have the most fukk-up brain in the world. Seriously though, and no offense here.

What perplex me most is his comparison of a third world Laos to well-developed countries like Canada and U.S. using those cars as his logic? I wonder if he has been smoking too much opium over there.disbelief

Unless he is one of the owners and the car paint's too shiny it made him blind.

Having of expensive cars seem doesn't suit to Lao city as you've seen he condition of the road still in poor condition. Less than 0.000000.1% of all Lao population to have car like you have. But it doesn't show that we are rich now. Those who has expensive cars are from riches politicians or Lao high end officers family which is full of corruption

If they are the real Buddhist, nice and expensive car means nothing

I'm sure those with expensive cars care about their wealth and status more than the Buddha's precepts.  Pray to the mighty kips, dollars, bahts or whatever that they stash away.

The thisng is how we are going to reduce that numbers? Not just waiting for our Gov to look after but all of Lao whether in or outside of Lao but must be in one team working together. But in reallity, this is a dream to have such a good coorporation with each other. As long as Lao Nork still selfish and Lao Nai still stupid

I looked at the photos up thread and saw no poverty. I did see many electric lines suggesting access to electricity, a satelite dish for TV, a buffalo, quite a few well dressed people. The houses of bamboo are ok, most had the big posts of wood not the cheap ones of bamboo. Floors and walls of bamboo of course but my sister in law had a house worse than any of these. I didn't see any obvious malnutrition.

I'd say these were not poor but rural people living close to a large road.

Further.

I searched for and found the article in Asian Week, here's the link.

http://www.asianweek.com/index.php?s=laos

On the link I saw no further reference to source of the numbers, are they from 1980?

Schools in Laos are improving at a staggering rate. I've seen government teachers 10km from the nearest road. Education isn't great but it's improving at a fast pace.

I don't think Laos is the poorest in SEAsia. Cambodia and China both have many more desperate people. They also have more rich but the poor in Laos aren't as poor.

Yes Laos is undeveloped, it doesn't look like America, so what. Until I see the source for the nubmers they mean nothing to me. When I saw the words "unspoilt by tourism and development" I knew I was hearing from someone fresh off the plane.

need toilets in school so the kids don't have to go to bush or rivers  and running clean water and schools and vaccines . Education and food are the most needed . NO need expensive exotic cars .

I admire your optimism and I also share the same view that Laos is indeed improving (gradually yes, but on its way) in terms of economy, education and even on health care. Just this week a colleague told me that >80% of health centers in Lao PDR received the new vaccine cold chain facilities from the support of Luxemberg. This I expect would improve access of people to quality vaccines and essential medicines, and reduce wastage due to expiration and exposure inappropriate temperatures.

However, I dont know how you define poverty. But a poster here is trying to imply that Laos is now rich due to the presence of some luxurious cars in the city, which is a no way can be used as a measure of poverty alleviation. Especially since quite a number of people in the rural communities cant even afford transportation cost to go to the health center for check up. Many sick just accepted their fate and counted the days until they breathe their last breath; even if they get examined they dont have money to buy medicines.

Many young children (as young as 7 y/o) in the rural communities are also into child labor and are out-of-school to  help their parents in the field. What is the use of good school facilities if the students only represent <60% of the school-age population. no

If you remember the kid with bedsores that I posted here, he stopped studying after 5th grade because he had to help his parents in the field. He got paralyzed when one day he was carrying a heavy sack of mt. rice and accidentally slipped and hit his butt on a rock, mom had to ran to the village to ask neighbours to carry him back home; since then he never walk again. He was brought to the hospital and was only given B Vitamins and 3-day supply of antibiotics. He got his wounds on his knees from crawling to get water, pee or find food to eat as he was often left alone at home, while parents and other siblings work in the field. This is only one of those stories, there are more. If you don’t call this poverty then I don’t know what else to call it. Many of the communities who have access to electricity are along those frequently visited by tourist. I remember visiting A village in Luangnamtha, 45 minutes away from the town they only got electricity supply from 6-9pm every day; but when we moved further away to a place frequented by tourist they have electricity supply 24/7 even if they are 3-4 hours away from town. Some villages in the north with rough road and dangerous trail only rely on kerosene day and night. Some people take a bath in muddy waters along with their buffalo friends. I don’t mean to offend but this is the reality.

The figures and write-ups do they really matter that much? Often they’re not 100% accurate anyway. Besides Laos doesn’t need to be compared to Cambodia, Myanmar or China nor does it matter that much if it is labelled as one of the poorest country in the world (I didnt say this anyway) to realize the fact that there is a significant proportion of Laotians who are poor.  What I am afraid of is that signs of development in popular places like VNT, LPB, Savannakhet, Champasak, and Vangvieng, etc. will mask the existence of below-poverty people living in the remote places...that the unreached population will remain unreached and neglected.  no

I think Laos need to get out of poverty fast since there is alot of chinese, vietnamese workers coming into Laos illegally. And if laos trying to get out of poverty by 2020 then act now. The last thing that the government should think frist, because the more people entering illegally the more problems and the worst it gets.

that is the answer that we are looking for. Laos is very rich in term of natural resources, but very very poor in term of Human resources. We got some highly educated, but brainwash and become brainless because of personal benefits, and leave 90% of laos live in the dark of 21 century. Thos poor people will never know what is 21 or 22nd of century the world  look like,  becuause of a bunch of people profits from them everyday.

iagree that laos is rich in term of natural recoures and poor of HR,  yes it is very important in Laos, as for Laos government, i think the gov doesn't take a priority for education in Laos, the money don't use and invest to education reform in Laos, many school and education protects has been aided by international org, it's so sad. however, rich or poor is not the most important of all, i think the most important is that people are happy to live and enjoy life day by day.

Poverty is a fact of life regardless of whether you are in Laos, or the UK, or America. What is sad is when there is no effort is made by each concerned government on alleviating this social concern.

Laos is not like other countries, it has not access to the sea, the mountainous area occupy more than the 3/4 of the country, the rice and other crops are low because we don't like to use chemical fertilizer and pesticide because it is too expensive but most lao people is happy with what it has In this world, not a single country could claim that it has no poor people...

I think u haven't read the other topic which talks about GDP of Laos compare to others country in the region, not to US, even not to thailand cambodia and vietnam. Laos is 60% below Papau New Genea, a new country, small island, that just finished a masscre war 6 years ago. You are rite we are moving every day, like turtle of course, and 90 percent still poor, but they still have rice to eat, so let them be a poor no?

But if you truly care for the "real Lao people" you should know that they deserve better than that, right? Have you ever tried talking to them heart-to-heart? Are they really satisfied with their current status? Do you think if they have better options, if they are informed and aware of the advancement you can see in VNT,  if they will learn other ways to make a living.... would they still say "we are happy with how we are rigth now?"

If you think they are happy and you as Lao is happy and contented with these fellow, would you exchange your current status with them for at least 3 years so they too will experience the comfort that you have. That they will also find time to type their thoughts in the computer and not break their back the whole day working in the field to put adequate food on the table???

Now tell me, would you do that?

you are wrong my friend, now,Laos is like other countries, look there are many car in laos, before there were a few car in Laos so it's like other or not?

not access to the sea, bull****, this is only execute that the lao government use to protect themselft when they can't develop this country

we dont use chemical fertilizer becasue the farmer dont have enough money to buy it, but it was before 1975 and before 2000, after 2000, the Chinese chemical fertilizer has opened the agent and shop in laos,  more and more farmers use it so, do you think laos is not like other country???

lao farmers dont use cow or buffalo to work in the rice field anymore, u know why? because now we have a steel buffalo,it used gasoline and it works even longer, so you think laos is not like other countries?

however my friend, just a little thing to tell you and the world that laos is changing, changing to the modern world. people's mind are opening, opening to the world of crazyness and not happy anymore.

regards

Hehe ! you are optimistic, my friend, it is good. Why we are not like others ? because we have to pay high tax to the government and profit to those who run business in importing goods from oversea + the transportation. lao farmers have to pay more than 20 % the same tool paid by thai farmers and if you, my friend, want to buy a sedan car you have to pay 120 % importing tax+value added tax more than a thaiman can afford to buy it in his country. This is the difference, my good friend.
regards.

Hi Mod, Im just wonderin why you deleted my post challenging posters here living in comfort if they would be willing to exchange their current well-off life to experience being poor for a while and see how it feels going to bed in empty stomach, if they will still say being poor is JOYFUL, that poor people being able to laugh does not  mean  the poor has no desire to improve their life and wish things would be different.

The best way to get poor people out of poverty is to face the reality that the problem exist and not to keep on denying it, hiding it or acting like a hypocrite that people accepted wholeheartedly that they are poor and there is no hope for them.

If each and everyone will acknowledge it exist, be realistic and try not to be defensive, maybe this will trigger everybody to think of the real best way to lift Laos out of poverty.... Acknowledgement and cceptance are the first steps. Once you accept you will cooperate in the efforts and solutions that address this issue.

If people here will keep on saying that those poor people in the rural Laos are already happy and satisfied and those living in comfort agree to that, then there is no reason for NGOs and other countries to support the country anymore....

Ironically, whenever there is a post about development in VNT, everybody says "horray, gogogo." But whenever, something here plays devils advocate to not let you forget about the majoirty who lives below poverty and needs attention, many will turn their back and pretend not to notice... nodisbelief

I don't think Lao people or Lao government denied about poverty in rural, that's why they have projects and plans to minimize poverty, but look long ago before 1975 if you travelled from Pakse to Savannakhet there was no electricity for many part of this road....but now along the road 13 from Vientiane to Pakse we have light now....if we talk about poverty, just have a look recently in the news about JAPAN, there are still plenty of homeless people....sleeping in the streets and going to charity for their meals....the same in USA or Australia.... there are people who still have to sleep in the parks, for some people saying that rural people are happy with the way they are, that's also some true in that statement, because they wanted to keep their believe and cultures, live simple perhaps without big Fuss. Documents showned us about Native People of Amazon in Brazil they wanted to live their life in jungles, they also told us when the Amazon native people were brought out in the open and live like other brazilian they died out.....because many problems from food to health, they were not immune to many new things which they faced.
So just saying that Lao people or Lao government denied the existence of povery in LAO in a kind MISLEADING or they do have BAD INTENSION toward LAO. Lao government did have plans and direction to help rural people for a better life. Each time I visit LAO and going to rural areas I do see people have good houses...even satelite disc....but of course LAO is just like any other countries in this world, so there are rich and poor people, tell me if a country in this planet does not have poor people.

biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

There are many poors people living in many countries, but Laos is the poorest, don't you get that my fr? I know that u don't deny this fact, the problem is that you are hard to understand what is economic and what is GDP, and how we measure the economic performance of a country. I advice you to read more, better see the new release of Asia weeks, Laos is worst than Papua New Ginea. Do you know where this country is? and how bad this country is? goolge it.

I think the reason for this critic on poverty in Laos is because there is "NO PROGRESS" in laos or any development being done or made in almost all level.   TO deal with this is education in rural areas and college for those laotian who are welling to go to the nexts level on education and career.  Laos need more investor and jobs to build up there own income for local urban and rural areas and other development like roads.

Laotian are too relax we need to work harder in all programs and education and stop eating sticky rice maybe alittle bit so you don't get too relaxing.

Right ! I'd like to say it many years ago but many wouldn't agree with me . I had experience in planting gluetinous and white rice, the white rice is superior in quantity and weighing more than 1/3 of the gluetinous rice, it is a fact that no one cold deny it and more, the white rice contains less sugar and when sated you feel heavy hehe ! ... and after looking more closely arround us I found out that lao people is the only one people who eat gluetinous rice ( sticky rice ) as main food in the world. Thai eat white rice (not including esan people, they are of lao origin) so do vietnamese chinese, japanese, koreans, malaysian, cambodians, indonesians, burmese, tibetan , indians, bangladeshi Pakistani... Why don't we try to do like them ?

The reason why Laos is so slow is because they eat too much sticky rice, Which in fact it will make a person very lazy and tiredness. And no I am not saying anything bad about eat sticky rice just a suggestion that lao people eat it only make u that way.

Critics are good tool to improve yourself. All critics are good for Laos. Laos is so behind of everything. Again in 1960 the earning per capita in South Korea was lower than Laos. Today South Korea is investing in Laos. Logically it should be the other way around. Yes we are and still one of the poorest country in the world. We aren't the only one but we are in that group. Yes we do see couple Mercedes and other luxuries car in Laos in the big cities like Vientiane. But the middle class of Laos only make $20 a month. A professor at the university of DongDor only make $30 to $40 a month. Many high government officials rely heavily on government support, housing transportation etc.... Those who know how to get the money either right or wrong way, those are in very good shape. Laos need to extensively improve the educational system up to the international level for every son and girl of Laos. Because according to the rumor in 2015 Southeast Asia may become a union like Europe in 2020 Southeast Asia may share the same money like Euro. These are in the plan of all Southeast Asia government's desk already. By those years how can Laos compete with Thai, Viatnam who are immediate to Laos. Which they can freely and legally work in Laos. By the way Thai is some of the best medical team in the world. Someone was talking about NongKhai become Laos, I believe if Lao government can't improve Laos's educational on time Laos will belong to Nong Khai. These are the serious fact not just Bla Bla Bla like some guys up there. But I know we are Lao and Asian we always look down to those who aren't very fortunate. That's why we don't care and we say we already have some luxuries cars. But I know there are Lao people who don't want to say where he or she from when others people ASK: Where are you from?

let' s wait and see, we spent 34 years to achieve the actual level of poverty eradication and we will need other 40 years to double our income, cos' our forests are not forests any more it rather become brushes, so no more timber to export= no income for our high ranking officials

Watches are a beautiful thing. Certainly, they tell us the time - but aren't they so much more than that? replicas watches Through their watches, a person can express so much, and in a way it could be said:replicas watches Show me your watch and I'll tell you who you are.
