how to get young Lao Americans to care about Lao affairs?

Recent events at a "Lao Student Organization" have left me utterly appalled and even ashamed by their ignorance and lack of concern about the country of Laos, whether it be about its culture, history, poltics, geography, etc. These were not children, rather 19-25 year olds.

I blame it on lack of determination and knowledge. Selfishness, and perhaps maybe hip hop culture.

Any ideas of how to get young Lao Americans to care about Lao affairs? Or is it a lost cause for this generation?

for that age group, trying to force things down their throat will simply backfire.
you can lead a horse to water but can't force to drink; force it to drink & it'll spit the water in your face & do all it can to avoid water in future :P

& you have to understand that for them, Laos is kinda like planet Mars...it's somewhere out there, but not directly related to/affecting their daily life & interests as far as their world is concerned. human nature = we tend to care more about things we can relate to directly.

perhaps those who've had the chance to visit Laos will feel more interested. maybe wealthy parents can grant their kids an all expenses paid graduation trip - on the condition that the destination is Laos :P

anyway as they grow older, some will come to a point where they start to re-examine their self-identity, & start to wonder about their heritage...some might start being interested when they themselves become parents. be patient :)

Why should Lao-Americans can about Lao affair?

I read way too many comments about how bad Lao-Americans are; we should keep our mouth shut; We are a traitors and/or a childrens of a traitors; we abandon Laos; and Laos will go on just fine without us. So what we do regardless it does not matter. Now I read this comment. WTF!!!! I must be in a Twilight Zone episode.

I think you are not Lao.  I think you are Thai.  You want Lao Nork and Lao Nai to fight and hate each other. If you don't know the Lao government welcome Lao Nork back to Laos.

Why the Fuk Thai wants Lao Nork and Lao Nai to fight and hate each other. I don't know about him/her but I'm Thai and I do know (a little bit about) that Lao government welcome Lao Nork back to Laos. But Lao Nork must give up the other nationality, right? but I don't give a fuk about Lao business if it isn't including Thai. I never post anything in here unless someone started somethings about Thai. I don't give a fuk about Lao government and I certainly don't want Lao Nork and Lao Nai to fight and hate each other. So please don't throw chit at Thai OK? If you want to keep barking at each other that's you business but don't turn and bark at Thai. you little dumb chit.

I can understand you completely, I know for a fact that there're many many of the second generations of different ethnics here in the U.S. that can't speak their mother's tongue language, and don't know their own costume, culture, tradition, and etc......  so Lao children are not the only people that did know about their own culter etc....

I believed there are some who's interest to learn about Lao culture, like my friend who was born in U.S and grew up here, she loves to go to Lao temple and right now she's learning how to read and write Lao language.

If we are smart and beware of what they are so why would we care about simple old trick. Today Lao are well educated and ready to deal with these diplomatic trick . So don't get mad and get even  just get well educated and get rich and wealthy then every body will kiss your ass. For the Lao American to care that is very simple if the LPDR stop be selfish and corrupted and care about Laotian and the country and give the power back to the power and be the government for and by the people. Listen to the people .

It's not the priority of the Lao Government to get young Lao-American to be interest in Laos affair. Lao Government is very respectful of other country's internal affair. The Lao Government have an obligation to the people of the Lao PDR not the USA. Lao-American knows where Laos is....It's up to them to decide.

Another thing, don't use one organization or events to generalize or group other Lao-American.

And Isan should be name Lao instead because of the true name since ancient history! Isan will only divide us in the nexts future and seperate us distance away.

If you

I too, am part of this generation, and upon joining this university club, was hoping to find like-minded Lao kids.

Cut to the chase, after a few mishaps, I was told outright that the club, numbered around 27 closely-knit friends, did not care about Laos. Flat out.

I would agree that Obama's actions in the US of are more important to Lao Americans, however, what would the purpose of a Lao club be? I found it that it was a club for socially inept kids who seek a sense of belonging and friendship only based on their race. Not what I was expecting.

It really just saddens me to think of it. They have no intentions whatsoever to contribute to their heritage, and i think that is largely due to their ignorance. Then seeing shameful statistics and hearing negative stereotypes of Lao Americans compiles to the frustration.

DEATHEP, any real serious organization should have a charter and a mission statement of what they are trying to do. Otherwise it is just a club. So don't be upset about them. Look into some other group that share your passion.

Have you tried looking around for other Lao sororities or fraternities in your area. Im wondering how other youth "clubs" are doing in  terms of  puttin up th organization to enhace their understanding about Lao Culture, discovering their enthinicity and coming up with solid activities for the benefit of mother land. If most of the organizations are like that then your concern is valid. But if you find other organizations with a much deeper concern for promoting Lao heritage, then its ok, you may chose to join the latter instead.

I'm not Lao American, I'm a Lao and Thai (half) and I was taught to care about Laos by my family in the south of Thailand. Respect is a must! I do research about Laos both by oral information from Thai tourists who used to travel in Laos. And I am very proud of the country of my mom. In the same time, I also do some research about Thai and my very great hometown. I was born in Laos and came to live in Thailand with my father since 4 month years old. Right now, I'm 23 years old. I'm still unable to speak standard Thai fluently because my southern dialect (Surat Thani = the former capital of Srivijaiya Empire) is very very heavy so my friends in Bangkok think I'm very unique and funny sometimes. >>>> I have a good life in Thailand thanks to my parents.

I go to Laos to visit my mother family in Vientiane every 2-3 years. My mom is a Laonork (Lao American). She said that I need to learn more about Laos but in the same time I need to learn more about Thailand and how to live a peaceful life with respects to each other. I can say that I am very proud of myself because I have a good job here in Thailand and have a successful life in my network business (MLM)

Both Laos and Thailand are the country I love most. For Thailand, I have lived here since very small. I will be loyal to Thailand forever but I have to say that I'm not very nationallistic. I express my nationalism by action such as being a good Thai citizen.

For Laos, I still care about her. I support her by telling good things about to my friends and Thai people. I think I have done a great job here because I always suggest them to enjoy their vacation in Laos to support Lao tourism. I tell them how to go there and how to get good hotel there. What's our tourist attraction is like and sometimes I even take them to my mother's house. There are my grandfather and my grandmother there, they are very kind and sincere. I even used to bring my Lao friend to Thailand to my family (father's side). I always respect both countries. I also donate to Christian Organization in Laos who take care of orphan and I used to go there to see how they work to help Lao children in need and they do a great job. I will never donate my money to Lao government because I don't trust them (nor I don't trust Thai governtment either) I want to take an action directly to our people by myself not anyone.

In Thailand, when there was a big Tsunami hit the south of Thailand, I was a 5-days volunteer who COLLECT dead bodies of the victims. Once when I was working in the unit. A young Thai girl (very young) came to ask me where her mom is and the girl took the photo of her mom to me. And I check it for her both in the computer and the documents. 3 hours later, me and my team couldn't find her mom and finally we found her mom in the list of the dead victims. Do you know what happened after? I couldn't stop crying and when I'm typing this, it moved me to tears . ... ...

I think I'm very young to learn and to do good things to both countries if Laos or Thailand need me. I won't hesitate to help me IF I'M CAPABLE!

I think most Laotian-American really do care about Laos is just the fact that we don't agree on how the Laotian Government is doing development and relationship with Laotian oversea. I think the best thing for Laotian Gov. is to have more relationship with oversea Laotian and build new law and new idea together especially on investment and development again.

Tobias, though Im neither Thai nor Lao, what you said moved me and I believe it all came from your heart. You only prove that helping others in need has no border, and any help, big or small, counts as long as you're sincere. You remind me of my own experiences when I was still active with rescue and retrival operations with the Red Cross. Stand proud and I hope you will continue to be an inspiration to both Thai and Lao alike.

May you be blessed according to your faith! Cheers!

Hope springs eternal, and i believe no one is ever a "lost cause". If there's something they dont know, educate them. they are young, they can learn.

who ever said only Lao bor mee jai like Thai. Yau're sadly mistaken, we do not want to generalize people like a person without a head.
You should know by now, there're 2 kinds of Lao people exited: The EDUCATED/CIVILIZED Lao and UNEDUCATED/UNCIVILZE that like to bash, generalize, and stick with same idea with bad resault. confuseno

Watches are a beautiful thing. Certainly, they tell us the time - but aren't they so much more than that? replicas watches Through their watches, a person can express so much, and in a way it could be said:replicas watches Show me your watch and I'll tell you who you are.
