Laos need time and also everything always take time and slow moving forward while there neighbors are speeding up into the modern world. Sooner or later the Lao people will be left out of the dust if this process of development is not going anywhere. And also I think the Laos government should open to American investor and business into Laos which will also speed the process more and the western world. And about other topic I am truly sorry for those that felt offended I was only upset about the Laotian Government for not helping the Laotian people to go forward like everyone else.

For many people who live in the western countries believe that multiple parties will bring prosperity and progress for the country, but there are 9 countries in South America ( back yard of USA ) chose socialism to run their country so there must be reasons for it. Lao should be more transparency and deal with corruptions then many things could be done. Good leaders always see these, bad leaders will end up like the Romanian couple, at the end they just dragged them out and shot them....very humiliated way.

Think it's the sheer hard work of the people in South Korea & Singapore that has brought the country forward. I think Lao people can work hard too...but are they willing to think & work as quickly?

Technology & education are other factors. The education systems of South Korea & Singapore focus heavily on Mathematics & the Sciences. At Mor. 5 & Mor. 6 in Singapore, many students are already studying what US students study in their first year of university for Mathematics.

Is the government of Laos willing to spend the same percentage of GDP on Education as Singapore?

Oh and the only reason why South Korea and Singapore and all other city develop is because they are democracy and actually have multi party and freedom to build there country much quicker.

Kwanjai, have you tried living in Singapore before? We have a multi-party system that's pretty different from the multi-party systems of other countries (with >95% of the members of parliament all from the same party, it's almost the same as Laos). Don't know if we can really be called a democracy, as a high percentage of eligible voters don't actually get a chance to vote during elections. Freedom, depends how you define it.

S Korea's Hyundai Group to build vehicle assembling factory in Cambodia: ambassador

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Hyundai Company of South Korea will build a vehicle assembling factory in Cambodia, South Korean ambassador to Cambodia said on Wednesday.

"The vehicle assembling factory will be opened in coastal Koh Kong Province," Lee Kyung Soo, South Korean ambassador here told reporters in a news conference on the state visit of South Korea president Lee Myung Bak to Cambodian on Oct. 22-23.

The press conference is organized by the club of Cambodian Journalists.

But Lee Kyung Soo did not give the details about the amount invested by Hyundai in Cambodia. Deputy Director General of Hyundai Group already paid a visit to Cambodia a few days ago, LeeKyung Soo said.

The press release from South Korean Embassy in Phnom Penh said that Camko Motor Company is building a Hyundai car assembly factory in Koh Koh province, about 370 km southwest of capital Phnom Penh. It covered land area of 165,000 square meters with two facilities for maintenance and dormitory. It can assemble 3,000 cars per year and the type of car including SUV, Van and other cars.

According to Lee Kyung Soo, South Korea's investment in Cambodia last year was worth about 1,238 million U.S. dollars, but for the first six months of this year, the investment decreased about 58 percent compared with the same period of last year because of the global financial crisis. South Korea's investment in Cambodia focuses on the rubber plantation, mines, energy, oil and gas, real estate, tourism, construction, agri-industry, Lee Kyung Soo said.

For the bilateral trade between the two countries in 2008, Cambodia imported about 309 million U.S. dollars worth of products from South Korea and Cambodia's export to South Korea about 294 million U.S. dollars. So far this year the two-way trade volume is worth about 120 million U.S. dollars. Both sides will try to foster more trade volume, Lee Kyung Soo said.

Well some of you may have some a good idea on this^. But look at the Laos people in general? Do they really want a single party to run Laos and to decide what fit the people? Does Laos even have vote or opinion on how to work together and decide as one instead of one alone or organization deciding for all Laos? I think Laos should at least change there governing system and communism aren't that bad either its just how the government running Laos and hearing positive voice of each single Laotian men and women to improve there country entirely. And if you compare Laos and South America your looking at a different side of the world and people which not all culture and tradition run the same you know? And look at Laos its still a run down backwater where people from the outside world just ignored the people the culture and evey thing about Laos and people. Don't you Laos to improve and to show there self they are keeping up modernization? And do Laos gov. really want Laos culture and tradition to be weak and disapear? This is what Laos is lacking a and keeping a still, nothing is really going to improving and all of there neighbors are way ahead of Laos while the Government is still survey each country to see where they are heading. What I meant that millions of people died during the Korea war and the south government was completely broke and the people were starved and during the killing field in Cambodia as the whole world knew . We are here to discuss and learn, how do the south Korean , Singapore and Austria educated and train their people and developed and turn their countries from poor and poverty to the first world countries in only few decades. Also Cambodia is in the stage of the developing country as Laos and in the progress of constructing to transform and modern their cities. That is the truth , What should Laos has to learn and educated our people ? Should we take the Austria as the model that upper Austria invest a lot on education and training their people and turn their people to become skill workers. As we could see right now Laos need skill workers in every fields. This topic is to learn from how the south Korean, Singaporean and Austrian changed and educated their people and turn their countries from poverty to the rich and the first world countries. If Laos would like to change the laws and the foreign policy by be member of world community so the Lao government just do it no body stopping them just like many countries have done. Why Laos have to go through hell like Romanian coup. Laws and the system are made by the people so what laws and system and policy are failed so Laotian could change them. Laos need to be part of the world community and don't want to be isolated and be sanctioned by the world community like Cuba and north Korea .There are more investors in Cambodia than in Laos and a lot more foreign aid as well. All Lao people want good living, good health care , good education so it doesn't matter what system is called.

As long as , the Lao people has good living out of poverty , good health care , good education it does not matter the meaning of social engineering or what ever is called . South Korea and Singapore are rich because their people study hard and work hard and also nothing miracle at all. If Laos will wait for the miracle then I believe that will take a million years if Laos is lucky . Nothing in life come easy so Lao people must earn them and not just wait for the handing out and foreign aid money that will not help to make Laos to be like Singapore and south Korea and Austria. Good news that the south Korean will hire the local Cambodian to work and train the Cambodian some skill so they will become skill workers unlike the Chinese building the stadium in Laos that the Chinese brought their own workers or even building dams and Chinese casino workers are Chinese. All the foreign companies in Cambodia are hiring the local Cambodian so a lot of jobs for Cambodian. I hope the foreign companies in Laos would hire and train local Laotian like they have done in Cambodia.

Education is the main thing to pull people out of poverty line, laos has to work harder to get its people educated, nowaday, in rural area, most people don't feel necessary to have toilet room, or good latrines for their own use, don't feel necessary to have clean environment in their own homes they still live in their parents home built forty-sixty years ago with very dirty " keeseek " which might accumulate all kind of bacterias that get people sick because those people are uneducated. We want to be like Koreans, Singaporeans but do we really want to change and be like them ? Can we make sacrifices for this ? Are we ready to work harder ? To be or not to be , to want or not to want, that is the question !

I agree with you 100% . Education is the key . Knowledge plus hard working that what Laos need and that is no miracle. Laos must earn it and don't just waiting for the foreign aid and handing out for ever that will not make Laos go any where.

Nothing to do with how many political party . Singapore is one party state . It is matter is how to educated and train the people and also make the people obey and respecting the laws from the top goverment officials down to regular people and children , one and for all and no body above the laws and who ever break the laws as such corruption or any crimes, they must pay for their crimes. Just as the very simple law in Singapore from this video. Respect the constitution and the laws stop the government officials corruption and educated the people and train the people that are the key.

Are there any law for drinking age ? The government should make the laws that any body must be 21 years of age in order to drink . Also there must be a curfew at 10 pm for any students who are 18 years and younger. All the police officers and government officers must not drink any kind of liquor including beer Lao when they are on duty . Lao government officials must work harder and Lao students must study harder. I really don't know that the other country specially the first world countries would accepted the degree just as bachelor and master degree from Laos are equal the same international level . Any doctor from any countries in the world must take the exam and spending few years in practice hospital as the assistance in order to get license to be doctor and practice medicine in the US. But the other field such as math and physics , I really don't know.

There are not such as miracle years by military regime ruling my friends . Every things that south Korean and Singaporean turn their countries from poor and poverty to rich and to the first world countries are from working hard and study hard . Everything that the south Korean and Singaporean have done and they earned it. Also 9 counties in back yard of the US are socialism that are still very good for their people because the people still have the freedom of speech , press , equal opportunity , good justice system and the most important of all that the people have the human being right and the right to vote for their president and prime minister. And also any body have the right to be in the candidate for president and prime minister. So it is much different from north Korea and Cuba ,they just transferred the power from the father to the son and from the older brother to younger brother. Also their people have no right to vote for their president or prime minister. So the world community and committee could not accepted their behaviors . i understand your disappointing, but i m sure if LG opens up to ( why USA?) the world, then the gold will flow to our country ?! please, no offences here, but i don't think USA will do that for laos.

if you don't believe me, once USA was and what they did, you still can feel it, million of bombies were over the laos land. i think that lao government makes the math, when they run the country. the history should not be repeated as the 70 ties. i m happy that laos is moving forward, even slowy. my 3cent about western world is, the lao government should and have to be very careful about any country who would like to do a bussiness in our country. we have to learn from the pass and go forward step by step, because when you run, you can easily reach the point of your goal, but at the same time, it's a chance, that you can fell and break your leg and will never reach your goal at all. my3cent thought is better slower, than never get to where we are heading to.

According to BBC Report on Tuesday/6/10/2009 of United Nations Organization about HDI of 2009 LAO was ranking number 133 and Cambodia ranking 137. That means the leaving standard of Lao people are better than Cambodian people.

I Believed that American Govmnt realized their wrong doing that's why they're trying to help clear-out bombies in our country this is what I heard.
Thai & Hmong are just as guilty for indirectly helping American with this campaign during that time.
I'm too.... very angry,disappointed,and sadden by this so I asked myself is it good to make enemy with Americans of what they did to my country? what about Thai? and who else?
My answer is I want to see my country go forward and be strong not to let the history repeats.
I want you to know that the American attitude is they are not jealous of other country will be better or bigger than America.
They will most likely want share their skill with any country that have interest in learning what ever the area that this country wanting to learn from economy skill, sport and so forth... and as far as letting Lao American help win for gold at the Sea Games I don't think is a bad idea at all if he/she is very good and meet all qualifications, even Yao who played basketball for American Pro have gone back to Beijing during Olympic and play for his country. I have to agree with some of your view, but there is nothing wrong with letting American company and business into Laos since there is a lot of Laotian living in USA. And I think the LGov. should bring them in since alot of Laotian-American really do want to help out Laos and do business enterprise company in Laos. This is also a good time to build relationship with USA and Laos in the region and build back up Laos and improving the country ability compettively ,in all business sector in the future and our generation. Now is now if the L gov. really want to improve Laos and to be an active business country. But keep in mind L Gov. must keep education and medical a high priority to eradicate poverty quickly.

Very well my 3 cent friend , the United State bombed Germany and Japan even drop atomic bombs in Japan then rebuilt Germany and Japan and also rebuild south Korea after the war . The United State bombed Cambodia and Vietnam as well but doing the business with Vietnam and 7 largest investors today in Vietnam and also helping to rebuild Cambodia today and will help to clean up the bombs in Laos soon. Why Laos has to be isolated and be sanctioned from the free world and free countries? What does Laos have to lose ?Why does Laos have to follow north Korea and Cuba foot step and be isolated and sanctioned by the free world community ? Laos should look for the better and the future instead of living in the past . The United states was not the only one who caused the damage in Laos . Lao government has to compromise about the dual citizenship also because there are a lot of retirees who won't want to give up their pensions and social security checks and benefit so they will have some income and could spend their golden years and die in Laos. Like the other nation such as Israel , the Israel allow dual citizenship. Also Laotian could have some politic power influence in the US congress and senators or even in the White-house to get loan to invest and rebuild Laos ..etc..

Laos and Cambodia are uniques in term of geography and cultures. The level of economic development in each countries could never be identical. Laos and Cambodia have its advantage and disadavantage. What's good for Cambodia not necessary good for Laos and vice versas. The skyscraper is not an indication of living standards and the well being of a nation. Laos as a Buddhist country, the emphasis is on spiritual well being and gross happiness index rather than GDP.

You are right but right now Cambodia is not only modern their cities only but Cambodia open free trade with WTO and expense their industries and more investors come to Cambodia and train and hire Cambodian people unlike Laos the Chinese come and brought their own workers so the other foreign companies , they don't hire and train the Laotian. Laotian need to start to be train and be educated to become skill workers that is how south Korea and Singapore and Austrian leaders have done for their people. Education is the most important for Laos to be successful. Laos could not afford to depend on foreign aid and handing out that will bring Laos no where.

Also the people who are well educated such as doctors , professors , skill workers and successful business persons that are also the people that Laos need . South Korea and Singapore are rich because their people study hard and work hard and also nothing miracle at all. FYI, Laos is already open up to American investors and the Lao Government are actively seeking become a full membership of the WTO. The question is? Where are the American investors? We have the most liberal trade & investment laws in ASEAN.

Of course, you are right that it is easy to say than to do it but south Korean and Singaporean have done it . The Siamese use to say the same thing to them and also used to look down at Singaporean as the low class people who were living like the animal 10 to 15 people in one room and now 40 years later . Singapore became the richest country in Asia and more well educated people than Thailand. siamese used to say that Singapore was just tinny island and swam and the poor and low class people and uneducated people who were working in the dock by loading and unloading the ship for the rich people who own the shipping companies. So many of us in this web site are always complain about Thai Bang Kok are always make fun and low down on the Lao people so if we won't start to educated and train our people to become the skill workers instead to be just low cheap none skill workers and farmers then how the future of Laos will be ? This topic is about how to educated Lao people and turn Laos out from poverty like south Korea and Singapore.
