Laos, hurry up now

Written by DAP NEWS   --   Wednesday, 28 October 2009 09:49

Phnom Penh will boast a state-of-the-art solar powered ‘skytrain’ similar to the elevated trams of Bangkok if plans discussed in a meeting on Monday are put into action. The developer claimed the new skytrain could carry over 600,000 people per day, with a possible capacity of over 1 million people by 2043.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) held a meeting presided over by MEF Minister Keat Chhon with the GREENCAMECO Company, according to MEF reports.
About 39 km of rail would be built around Phnom Penh, Richard Rory of GREENCAMECO said.

An addition 34 km would be covered by buses and solar power would be integral to the project, he added.

The four year project would take until at least 2014, with the first stage from 2011 to 2013. The total budget will be over US$3.6 billion, GREENCAMECO said. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the MFE Keat Chhon recommen- ded that “Before starting project, the company should survey extensively first, to protect any impact to the related railways of Cambodia.”

All designs and planning should be clear and support ease of access for all disabled Cambodian people, as well as children,” Keat Chhon added.

Rory said the project would support Cambodian development, inclu- ding public transport, road safety and less traffic jams.

The company should cooperate with the Ministry of Land Manage- ment, Urban Planning and Construc- tion together to better serve the public, Keat Chhon added.

LAO population is not huge, so why Vientiane should have sky train, look Canberra the capital of Australia does not have this sort of thing, and even bullet train project from Canberra to Sydney had to be cancel because it too expensive even rich country like Australia. Vientiane needs a good public transport system then it would do the good job.

I agreed, we don't have to prove to anyone wheather we have or don't the "state-of-art skytrain... Who cares......I love LAO the way it is now.

What will the skytrain benefit? Just Vientiane? There are other Laotians out side Vientiane city limit. Let us do something that would benefit all.

It is just a waste of money to build that. There is no way Laos can build this at the current Laos economy or even 10 years from now. I would rather see a better highway system from North to South, better police force, does Lao even have a fire department?, and clean the garbage around the city. Laos will always going to be a tourist destination and if the place is disgusting no one will come.

I don't think Cambodia need Sky Train right now in next 2-3 years. I have seen Phnom Penh by my own eyes last year. Local people can't efford to pay for the ticket to riding the sky train.

They don't have even normal railway. Road still in red dust and only main roads has good condition. Come on. Cambodia is not the country in Middle East. Their economic doesn't go so fast right that. Their educaion of the people stil very low skills and it's take quite sometime to make and prepare their highly skilled labors for factory industries

Confirmed that The Sky Train will be in just dreamed of people in Cambodia for next few decades. 2043 I may believe it. But 2011-14 It's impossible

Ground level tram system is better for small city like Vientiane.  It's also cheaper to build too.

to laos, vientiane doesn't need nor the people will effort to use this kind of skyline train if someone build it. the same to the buildings. it would be nice to have hundred of the kind of building in the back ground, but who will pay to live in. everyone knows when you live in just building, your freedom is limited,. it'll be a very strict rules and policies, otherwise these kind of buildings will last short. think about it !

we should do what we need, a not what we want.

I am not Laotian nor Cambodian, but Vietnamese. Skytrain!? So much money!. It's waste of national resources, Gov't better to use money for investing in better road, hospital, school. They must use money in a usefull way, for long term purpose, not short term.

It's not the government but private companies that are planning to invest in the skytrain. Cambodian government is poor and can't afford the 3.6 billion dollar bill that this project will cost.

skytrain and subway in bangkok average fare around 3$ USD per day , 90$ per month

I agree with some comment above, local cambodian can't afford to pay for the ticket.

yes, they can't afford the ticket. So that compny will burn $3.6 billion when they finihed building the skytrainbiggrinbiggrin

I don't think investors will invest in a country unless they see profits. The project in not slated to be finish until at least 2014. Maybe by then the average Phnom Penhian can afford to play the fares for the skytrain instead of wasting valuable time and petrol in other modes of transportation due to the congestion of the streets in the city.

For speak-out, Either we have it or not. I'm fine with that. But what i really want them to do and fast is to up grade our Education, they the Govt need to invest heavily on Education Systems. Remember, you can build the tallest building in the world  if you want it too. But if that building do not have strong foundation, that building just like a piece of ****. i hope you understand me what i'm trying to say, right.

600,000 people per day???? that IS a very ambitious plan, but its also a welcome development since sometimes, its hard to deal with their tuktuk drivers. you agrfee on a price then upon reaching the destination, the rate drastically changes (as was my similar experience in India). great news.

There are major differences between the NEEDS and the WANTS. At the moment, Vientiane does not NEED a state of the art Skytrain. However, the Lao Government have done a feasibility study on the subject matter. At the moment there are more urgent issues in Vientiane that needs to be address than a Skytrain for the purpose of bragging right.

Phnom Penh is not in the List of Asia's Metropolitan yet. Only Japan, S. Korea, China, Hongkong, Taipei, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and India in the list

well, I am a Phnom Penh recedecnt. Traffic in PP is suck!!!!!  I would agree with all of you said we need to have better edu. but it for the whole country! but for Phnom Penh to build a skytrain is another solution for difference problem. Skytrain will not build by the government. I think some of you here even don't look at the article maybe just the title. :) well I would worry also if the PP recedecnt can't afford to buy the ticket might be the investor from Australia and Korea too stupid to invest this amount of money 3.1 billian?? Well, maybe they look far then you look or they study about Cambodia more then you did! So How many of you here come to Phnom Penh and learn about Cambodian living standard? or you look at the Province side and talking about Phnom Penh eith this article?? Well. I don't understand what the reference you did! I can tell you one small thing: to go to one place to other place in PP is very expansive!!! for Skytrain which use the green anegy will make a changing!
NOte: before this project. PP also have another project from Thai company wanted to build teh skytrain as in Bangkok but it was rejected cause Cambodian gov't and Cambodian said that it not time for PP to have this kind of transportation yet.

Hi Just want to correct you.
3 interconnected electric trains runs across Metropolitan Manila, 2 with tracks above ground and 1 withtracks both above, on and below ground. They 2 lines are called Metrorail transit 1 &2 (MRT1&2) and Lightrail Transit (LRT). This is in addition to the traditional train that runs on ground.

Well, I have been in Philippine for one month. I was staying in Queson city.   To go to one place to other places I don't use Taxi, bus or jeepny. All the time I go out I am walking or using the skytrain. Skytrain is my best transportation for me because traffic in Manila and other city in Phi r terrible.! :D Pls go to take a look at Manila and Phnom Penh. The differece of Manila and PP is Manila is a mega city PP is not. But look at the side of PP compare to the population right now?? PP is now too small for PP citizens that why now there are many city r in Construction in order to solve this problem. Look at Camko City, Koh Pich City, Grand Phnom Penh International they are the  sooner future of Phnom Penh. Again I am a Phnom Penh Citizen, waiting to use the skytrain. And I don't think that we need to compare Cambodia to Laos or PP to Vientiane because we have difference problem to solve.

Best Wish,

Rasmey
