Laos to join world coffee organisation

Laos plans to join a global coffee association at the end of this year, in a bid to boost exports of the crop.
Lao Coffee Association President Sinouk Sisombath said yesterday the Lao government would apply for membership in the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) at its annual conference in September.
He said Lao coffee growers, exporters and processors would benefit fr om membership in the international organisation, adding that Laos would also be able to obtain technical assistance from the world body.
Lao coffee traders will be able to access information about the coffee market, which is important to boost the export of Lao products.
Laos is one of many coffee exporting countries. At present, exports amount to 15,000 to 20,000 tonnes annually, generating revenue of about US$60 million a year.
The only coffee growing area in Laos is the Bolaven Plateau, which straddles the southern provinces of Champassak, Attapeu and Xekong. The plateau has fertile soil and a climate that is conducive to coffee growing.
The International Coffee Organisation (ICO) was set up in London , UK , in 1963 under the auspices of the United Nations because of the great economic importance of coffee. It has administered six International Coffee Agreements.
At present, the organisation has 77 members including 45 coffee exporting and 32 importing countries.
The ICO is the main intergovernmental organisation for coffee, bringing together producing and consuming countries to tackle the challenges facing the world coffee sector through international cooperation.
The organisation also makes a practical contribution to the world coffee economy and to improving standards of living in developing countries.
One of the organisation's roles is to enable government representatives to exchange views and coordinate coffee policies and priorities at regular high-level meetings, encouraging a sustainable world coffee economy, initiating coffee development projects to add value and improve marketing.
The organisation plays a role in increasing world coffee consumption through innovative market development activities, promoting the improvement of coffee quality.
The organisation also aims to ensure transparency in the coffee market by providing objective and comprehensive information on the world coffee sector by means of statistics and market studies.
Coffee is one of the world's largest traded commodities produced in more than 60 countries, providing a livelihood for some 25 million coffee farming families around the world. Many of these countries are heavily dependent on coffee, which can account for over 75 percent of their total export earnings.
Among consumers coffee is a universally popular drink, with over US$70 billion in retail sales a year. ICO exporting members account for over 97 percent of world coffee production and its importing members are responsible for around 80 percent of world coffee consumption.

To start with maybe she should consider membership to the Lao Coffee Association. It will give her an advantage on how to maximize opportunities for her products. Sometimes the association may also offer seminars or trainings on how to improve crops and boost income from the coffee industry.

i will be traveling to laos in 2 weeks i will be there for around six weeks. I have been to Laos before and spent some time in the country side ,looking to spend more time out on the country this time...is there anyway i could possibly visit you families coffee plantation? i was in the Bolaven Plateau last year for a week or so...planning on heading back.

Hi Jay going back to laos in the next couple of week! good luck and enjoy our motherland in advance. If you can wait till december of this year i will take you there myself. And if i know you personaly i would give you their address and telephone number and the whole nine yards. But for now here it is:once you get the city of Paksong ask or pay someone to take you to Mr Seyphonedone's home, then ask for Mr Say or Mr Zuiet Luangsouvanh and tell them"your brother Ty send you".

thank you so much! on this website i am constantly reminded of how nice ,hospitable and friendly the Laos people are...i live in America and i can tell you there is no way people would be this helpful to me.i mean you offering the info to get to your brothers coffee plantation and giving me your name to tell him... ,,that's amazing!!..
i realize we don't know each other ,but i can tell you i only have the best intentions , i am just looking to get to know the Laos people and their culture , the only way to do this is to be with Laos people..and you are helping me do that..... If you have any questions about me feel free to ask,i will gladly tell you anything you like, so we can get to know each other better.
