A Jumbo of a Win for Mom & Daughter
Schenectady – Viengkham Kounnavong and her daughter, Anna Vargas, vowed to split their Lottery winnings if they ever hit the jackpot. Their promise recently became a reality when they purchased the popular Jumbo Bucks Instant game ticket at Wegman’s, their local grocery store.
Kounnavong purchased the jackpot winning ticket from a New York Lottery vending machine at the grocery store. She said she knew it was going to be a winner when she saw that the selection button for that particular ticket wasn’t originally lit like all of the other tickets, but then lit up while she was making her selection. Vargas couldn’t be more thrilled with her mother’s selection of the elephant themed Instant game ticket.
Mother and daughter both plan to take a trip to Kounnavong’s native home, Laos in Southeast Asia, dubbed "the land of a million elephants" by King Fa Ngum in 1353 A.D. Kounnavong and her husband, Vargas’ father, moved to the United States after the Vietnam War 25 years ago. The 46 year old Kounnavong, mother of three, shares the prize with her oldest daughter, 24 year old Vargas, who has a daughter of her own. Both mother and daughter plan to continue working, Vargas in retail and Kounnavong as an assembly worker at a local company.
Jumbo Bucks is a $5 Instant game ticket with 12 chances to win up to $1 million. Overall odds of winning a prize on the Jumbo Bucks game are 1 in 4.92. Mother and daughter purchased their winning ticket at Wegman’s, 2599 W. Henrietta Road, Rochester. In addition to announcing the first Rochester millionaires of 2005, the New York Lottery also recognized Wegman’s as the #1 retailer in lottery sales by location for 2004.
