I don't know why they can't just say China Town instead of New Town.I am anxiously looking forward to seeing it.Vientiane has been called a Capital City of Laos but it looks more like a sleepy countryside in the West. Vientiane, for once, will have a city that resembles other modern towns and deserve to name it a capital city. Would there be a proportionate residence between Laotian and Chinese once this splendid town appears in our eyes?

Depends on how much the residential housing project will cost and how developers are going to market it. If they make it like a high end place, I doubt if there will be that many who can afford to settle there.
Im too busy and cant find the time to read the article (but have the time to reply, he he). Im not sure how it will be developed. Is it going to be a commercial complex or both commercial and residential?
I ask because I am thinking how this project can create job opportunities for Lao. Im sure at least one of the users here would ask that. Im thinking that if part of that is a mid to high end residential housing project, then the most likely longer term job that locals can get is becoming house helpers.
For commercial areas, then more variety of workers/ laborers will be needed.
Well , it is good to see Laos to be developed but in the same time it is sad that Laos will be take over indirectly by the Chinese in every business and future in political as well. I prefer to let the Japan , south Korea , Singaporean , Thailand , Australian and European Union countries to help to develop Laos better because those countries will not send million of their people to settle in Laos like Chinese and Vietnamese. AS every predict that local Lao people will never be able to catch up with the Chinese . The majority of Lao people will always are going to be not well educated and poor and become the minority of our own country and worst of all the will be discrimination and racist between the rich Chinese and low class poor Lao people. So another Lao Chinese for the next generation will be like Thai Chinese in Bangkok who are racist and look down at Lao and Esan people. The same way it is happening in China with the Chinese Muslim today and in Tibet. Well , sad but it is the truth. Laos is still called Laos but the people rule Laos will not be Laotian any more but Chinese and Vietnamese in the next new few generations. as we could see the Chinese will open the Chinese University which will taught in Chinese for the Chinese children and Lao student who speak and read Chinese and will be taught more to loyal to China and Chinese culture more than Lao culture. Even Thailand is illegal to have any Chinese school and every Thai school teach the student to loyal and love the king of Thailand. Now Laos should have all the Chinese who are resident in Laos must learn Lao and Lao culture and loyal to Lao Lan Xang start from when they are very young otherwise big problem that Lao people will face for the nest 20 years . Well the high rank government official please think about Lao nation ethnicity will be extinct or just only $$$$$$!!!!!!. Laotian will be like the American Indian if Laotian are lucky and will survive the invasion of the Chinese and Vietnamese as we know Laotian are very slow multiply but the Chinese they multiply like rabbits.
This is what happen when you depend on others to do things and paid for you. You will ending up be their little bitch for awhile. It is part of a pay back deals. Since you can't pay them back with $$$, they will take something else whether is land or natural resources.
I 'm rather like the western countries to help develop who will not send their people to indirectly conquer Laos. Asean is still better to be part of Thailand than Laos to be part of China because at least Thai language and Lao language are similar and understandable. Thai is the number one investor in Laos today but never send million of Thai to live in Laos like Chinese and Vietnamese.

But some Loa kids hate Thai and love Chinese and Vietnamese who will destroyed Lao culture and take over the nation. MONEY $$$$$$$!!!!!!!
There is no free lunch. Nothing is free. If you want some thing and don't have money that is what the poor people , the nation and country have to sacrifice for the government's mistake. Must learn to earn the money before spending the money so the people don't have to sacrifice for the government who make all the decisions for all Lao people without Lao people approved. The country and the land are belonged to the people, not only belonged to one group of people who rule the country and make all the decisions for the whole country without inform and let the Lao people know of what their futures are going to be and what the country and the people will be facing in the future and have to pay the price. That is not too bad to build China town in That Luang mash that is developing and modernizing the city. But building the new Chinese university in Vientiane which will be taught in Chinese language for the next generation of Chinese population in Laos that is bad idea. Laos should make all citizen to learn Lao and respect and loyal to Lao Lan Xang and international or universal language ( English only) allow to be taught after Lao language. Thailand are very good in controlling to teach and make all citizen loyal to Thailand and the king by not allowing to have Chinese school in Thailand. So Esan and Thai Chinese are all loyal to Thailand because of good controlling of what Thai government teaching in school.

Laos history will repeat again the first " LAO KINGDOME" where at? and why did we move to the place where we are now ? Because of chines is that right? laos government must to do the homework before sign any documents, not just see $$$$$$ will flow into pocket.

Laos has to start somewhere. Right now they are depending on help. There's nothing wrong with that. A lot of countries started out that way.

Yes , a lot of countries start out that ways by always depending on the handling out such as countries in Africa and never try to be our their own feet and never go no where for century . Why don't Laos look at better model who would not take too much advantage from Laos.
Japan , Germany , Australia , south Korea and other countries in Europe who could help Laos without sending millions of their people to live in Laos. the Chinese has send their people to settle in Laos and the Chinese multiply very quick and much faster than Laotian and soon Laotian will be minority . Most of the business and land will be owned by the Chinese. You are Laos but no land to live and have to rent the land to farm and to live in our own country from the Chinese and Vietnamese. Lao don't own Laos but Laos are owned by the Chinese.
oh ! maybe you are right but for me, no free lunch, no one love laos than lao people...no government don't love its people...Hehe ! I might be wrong on this last paragraphe... who will inheirit the new stadium ? our children ? not sure as long as the chinese will continue to take cocession of it, who will pay the dept our children for sure ...

No government doesn't love her people but some high rank official prefer the Chinese wiring the money into their accounts in Swiss bank.

They love money and themselves so do every body. You would not take the money so you will not be around too long.
Laos is better to move forward then nothing at all. Laos still in a poor stage and will it ever going to prosper like Singapore or Malaysia? Or even Tokyo for all we know, Laotian must work together rather you a Lao Nai or Lao Nok. And who ever invented that saying "Lao Nai and Nok" is a stupid goat!

Live Long and Prosper.
It would take few thousands years for Laos to be like Singapore or Japan and perhaps never unless the asteroid strike the earth first to wake Lao up. Right now the development of Laos is frozen in time.
let's say 100 year for laos to compete with actual Bangkok and in 100 years what BKK will look like. Go to compete with Nongkhai first, their roads in rural area iare much better than Vientiane city's, all concreted , you will not see it if you only go to " big c, big chiang " or other center, I seldom go there 'cos I have no much money. haha ! to tell the truth, ( I say it very softly)...I was ashamed and still am after visiting my relatives years ago...in very far rural area in Changvath Loei ....and Nongkhai... Sixiangmay district I'd like to cry HuHuHu !
Japanese, Korean, Thai, Singaporean, Malaysian and Westerner races : Special First Class Citizen
But UN race : Is our God to can bring in the money by magic to poverty of Laos
Hmong and Lao are the same class but Chinese and Vietnamese are the bosses. There is no God to bring Laos any money but Lao must earn the money so stop depending on handling out which the Lao people will pay the big price by losing their farm and their land to the Chinese and Vietnamese for the debt settlement.
The "New City Development Project", as the government refers to it, involves a joint venture between three Chinese companies managed by the Suzhou Industrial Park Overseas Investment Co and a Lao partner. The terms of the agreement, first announced in September 2007, give the Chinese company a 50-year concession, with a possible extension for another 25 years, while the Lao partner retains a mere 5% share in the project. The project will revert to Laos once the concession period has ended.
"anyone country has china town, why dont laos build one? " mr somsavat lengsavat said
It's good to have China Town in Laos so I can find a lot of tasty Chinese food.
Hopefully it will be like n Bangkok
The Chinneses's ancestors who live in China town(Yaowarat) migrate to Siam more than 100-200 years ago. Their descendants now are 3rd or 4th generation.
Now,Thai chinese in Bangkok call themselves Khon Thai not Khon Jean(Chinese). Most of them except old people speak Thai ,don't Chinese. And they are the most potential group to develop Thai economy.
So I think it's different from new town in Veintien. When I went to Talad Jean(Chinese market)in Veintein, I didn't see any Chineses speak Laos,or watch Laos' TV. They still have chinese heart not Laos'heart unlike chinese people in Thailand.
Thai Chinese and Lao Chinese who have been fled from starvation in China 60 years ago are different from the new Chinese who immigrant in Laos today. The Thai Chinese and Lao Chinese who were born in Laos and Thailand are loyal to Thailand and Laos and respect and be part of Thai and Lao culture but the new Chinese who have no interested to protect Lao culture but dominate and conquer . The worst of all the Chinese will build the Chinese university in Laos and will be taught in Chinese unlike Thailand not allow any Chinese and every thing must be taught in Thai and loyal to Thailand. The new Chinese just like the French and the British who were looking to dominate and conquer in the third world countries in the 18 and 19 century. This is the new way of indirectly conquer.

The tentative budgetary estimate for a construction of this highly anticipated Chinatown is roughly $1.1 billion dollars and that's a lot of money. The Chinese ain't that stupid to spend away their money without some sort of decisively prudential expectations for substantial gains (economically, politically and influentially) and for sure they won't spend just for the love of Laotian. Any out of pocket monetary values from Chinese would already have been well calculated based on its customary practice. Its expenses are tantamount to its demands in return. We would be lying to ourselves if we are not worry about "sinicization" As I stated on my other post, the influx of Chinese in the 40s, 50s, 60s or even in the 70s was mainly due to a confluence of domestically repressive communist policy, the unending fate with poverty and the economic mismanagement. They were granted residency in many parts of the world based upon humanity, but the surreptitious deal of allowing the influx of Chinese into this little kingdom in our modern time is quite the opposite. They aren't there out of desperation but to boss around and to give orders eventually. You can't brag all you want about your ethical and moral values because by the end of the day, money still rules.
It would be nice to have greater assistance from South Korea, Japan, Singapore and other European nations but for now, it might only be a wishful thinking. The Chinese Communist Party is more than willing to sacrifice at any cost as long as she can gain her foothold in Southeast Asia in the 21st century; after all, many Chinese still consider it as their tributary states as it used to be in ancient China. We can only hope for newer generation of Lao Chinese or Chinese Lao to appreciate their Lao heritage instead of disdaining their fellow Laotian and expressing rather negative comments. Laotian do witness the economic potential by engaging itself with various investors, but it is also quite cumbersome when their irrational resistance to employ Lao workers whether in commercial enterprises, road construction, plantation; a good example would be Don Chanh Shopping Mall, the buildings of hotels around Vientiane and construction of road in the northern part of Laos. Vietnamese and Chinese brought in their own laborers unsympathetically brushing aside our locals who are filled with joy seeing their country for the first time moving forward and enthusiastically hoping to share that joy by gaining employment even if it would only has a diminutive effect on their living standard due to a minimal pay but even that only let them end up in a complete despair.
I have no doubt the new immigrants like Chinese or Vietnamese would maintain a dual citizenship to which it will give them advantage in maneuvering throughout their lifetime the undeniable opportunities from which Laos and their country of origin offer them. Can we revise or amend our constitution so that a requirement would apply to certain non-Lao ethnics who intend to permanently reside in Laos to use Laotian names, study in public or private Lao schools without precluding their choices to simultaneously study in their own Confucius Institutes? This might gradually absorb them into our society as one and eventually lead them to a full assimilation. Laotians must not let your guards down. Nothing comes easily including freedom and civil liberty. You must fight for your right. You deserve to be employed in your own country.

Our Lao leaders are very short sighted. This wetland is an invaluable asset for our future generations. I have nothing against China town but why can't they just build it some where else? Plus it's so not right to have a China town next to our national symbol. Imagine building a China town in New York Central Park.
How about building ChinaTown in Savannakhet city too? :) Since that's my parents home town and many other Laos top leader are from there also. I wish to hear news development in Savannakhet City of there progress beside casino.

Nothing wrong of building the China town in any part of Laos as long as it would not cause the trouble to the local people and hurt Laos in the long run politically just like xinjiang and Tibet. The discrimination and racist between the rich Chinese and poor local Laotian in the future generation to come. We would like to protect Lao ethnicity and culture don't want to become the minority of our own country or be extincted. Laos is not belonged to Lao people but the government and some group of powerful people in the government who made all the decision for all Laotian regardless the majoirty of the Lao people like it or not.

Have you ever heard of local consultations, public debates before decisions are made? The leaders will decide what's good or not for you. Just except your faith. Resistance in futile!

You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that is full of injustice. The sooner you except it the less painful it becomes.

Why does every time I post my view, someone just turn it into a chaotic episode? Please don't assume that I am causing trouble here ok? I'm just here to be more open minded about certain criteria. Oh my buddha!!
Will Laos and its people be the next Sipsongphanna?
I doubt it in 50 years Laos will still be named and called Laos and still in the map but the Lao people will be like Sipsongphanna and will speak Chinese mix with Lao because they are Chinese speaking Lao and all Lao Lan Xang will be extincted.

What rights would a Lao partner have when he/she owns only 5% in a joint-venture? Positively, rights are: carrying bags for the Chinese when they go to a meeting and serving them water when they are thirsty or not thirsty.
