Pig farming has an important role to play in small-scale agricultural systems in Laos , and can be a very profitable business, according to a successful pig farmer.
Mr Chantha Phamichanh and his family of 11 live in Phone village in Nongbok district, Khammuan province.
“Raising pigs is a way to generate income for the family, a source of valuable fertiliser for paddy rice and vegetable plots, and a means of family capital accumulation,” he said.
Mr Chantha said he started out with around 150 pigs after investing a total of 500 million kip.
His farm now has 1,500 pigs which are raised on a free-range system with a diet supplemented by rice bran and other household waste products.
Sweet potato is the most common crop in his local area after rice and maize, and both its tubers and leaves have high biomass yields.
Traditionally, sweet potato is used as human food when there is a shortage of rice, but at present it is commonly used as feed for farm livestock, especially pigs.
Mr Chantha said the tubers have high carbohydrate content while the leaves are rich in protein, and both parts of the plant can be used as animal feed.
With adequate food and care, his four-month-old pigs typically weigh between 95 and 120 kg. His total investment has now increased from 500 million kip to 1,500 million kip.
Through patience and perseverance with pig farming, his family has become wealthy, with an income of over 20 million kip per person per year.
The family owns seven vehicles, six houses, a rice mill and a feed processing factory, all bought from the proceeds of pig sales.
They have 150 sows and 15 male pigs as breeding stock.
The Lao government has given the highest priority in its rural development strategy to improving livestock production systems, given the potential of livestock production to alleviate poverty and reduce shifting cultivation.
