MANILA, Philippines—A large number of migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos face the threat of deportation from Thailand if the government goes ahead with its nationality verification process, an independent United Nations human rights expert warned last week.
In January, the Thai Cabinet passed a resolution allowing for a two-year extension of work permits for approximately 1.3 million migrants provided that they were willing to submit biographical information to their home governments prior to 28 February 2010.
However, migrants who fail to do so by this deadline risk deportation after the 28 February deadline.
Jorge Bustamante, the UN expert on the human rights of migrants, noted in a news release that carrying out the verification process in its current form places many documented and undocumented migrant workers at risk after 28 February.
“I am disappointed that that the government of Thailand has not responded to my letters expressing calls for restraint,” said the expert, who reports to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council.
“I reiterate my earlier messages to the Government to reconsider its actions and decisions, and to abide by international instruments,” he added. “If pursued, the threats of mass expulsion will result in unprecedented human suffering and will definitely breach fundamental human rights obligations.”
Bustamante called on Thailand to respect the principle of “non-refoulement,” noting that among the groups who may potentially be deported are some who may be in need international protection and should not be returned to the country of origin.
Like all UN human rights experts, Bustamante works in an independent and unpaid capacity.
Sad, most of the money support the families in Laos are coming from Laotian working abroad such as in Thailand , US European countries , Australia or from Lao nork who send the money back to Laos to help their families because most of their families are poor in Laos. If send those Laotian back home and they have no jobs that is very bad.
there are thousands of Lao illegal workers in Thailand, those workers won't be deport as long as the police doesn't catch them, so those are still sending back some money to family and survive day by day.
as illegal worker who has work permission in Thailand , if they are deported back to Laos, the Lao government should prepare some job for them, there are many dam protects, bridge protects and other construction protects in Laos. just to ban Chinese and Vietnamese workers to entry and work in Laos and then Laos will at least resolve unemployment issue in Laos

Actually, the red-shirt leader hired some worker from Cambodia to join his protest. This is awful............
I hate the red shirt and any dumb persons supporting the red shirt......

Im poor too, very poor. Im on the red shirt side also. If Im not mistakn Thaksin was rich man long b4 he became PM of Thailand. He helped poor pple that's how he won an election twice. There's not too many wealthy person on earth that cares about poor pple anymore, but him. He helped million, million of poor pple in Thailand. Only pple in Bangkok do not like him, bcoz most of rich Thai businessman and educated man live in Bangkok. On the other hand, there's also a slum, ghetto in Bangkok, just like any other major metropolitan. That's why they call it a sin city of Asia. Bangkok, a city of 7 million pples, but don't 4get 4 million of them are hookers. Pple all over the world go there to bang their ****s. That's how they got the name Bangkok.. OK? yu got it? well im glad that u got it........................
Yeah ! we should protect our people, help them to find some jobs, it is the government duty and priority to act as defender of lao citizen because thai government keep the jobs for its own citizen. as some one stated above , control the flow of workers from vietnam and china if they are not tourists, deport them to their contries and keep the job for our children. No country in the world accept workers except those who have contract with government agreement. I don't understand why our contry is full of small merchants of viets and chineses. when you go abroad , you have to see what is mentioned in the stamped letters that limits your stay in the contry and you should go out of the country before or at the very day of the expiration of you visa , if you don't want to be charged of aver stay, you should extend your visa otherwise you might be arrested and put in prison, and the visa also warned you that you can stay in the country solely as tourist all kind of jobs for you are prohibited but in Laos ? with those workers ? has the MOFA allowed them the work in our country ?
