Phongsavanh joins India’s Tata to develop infrastructure in Laos

Phongsavanh Construction Company and Tata International of India have signed a business cooperation deal to develop infrastructure in Laos, hoping to pave the way for national economic growth.

Phongsavanh Construction Company’s Director General, Mr Somboun Phongsavanh said, “Laos’ economy is growing and the demands for infrastructure have increased. This cooperation aims to develop national infrastructure to keep pace with current economic growth.”

Mr Somboun said Tata International is a large company with plenty of experience and advanced technology. “With our knowledge and the experience of our partner, we believe that we can produce successful work.”

Executive Director and CEO of Tata International, Mr O.K. Kual said, “This cooperation will bring more business investment from our company to Laos.”

Tata International is India’s largest multinational company, operating in the information technology and communications, engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals sectors.

“First we will focus on the fields of construction and infrastructure development. However, we will not be limited to that; I think we will have many things to do here,” Mr Kual said.

“Hydropower, road construction, solar energy, mining, autos, software and telecommunications are also interesting fields,” he added. “Laos is growing; therefore there is much potential here.”

“We don’t have specific projects now, however, after this signing we will discuss more with our partner and I believe that we will come up with more projects,” he said.

Mr Kual praised the Phongsavanh Group, saying it is one of the most active companies in Laos and has a strong vision for the country’s development. “This is the reason we choose Phongsavanh as our partner.”

Tata International is associated with the Tata Group, which was established more than 100 years ago. Today, the group is India’s largest corporation with revenues of US$70.8 billion in 2009.

The group’s companies export products and services to over 85 countries and operate in over 80. It is the fifth-largest steel producer in the world and is also well-known for producing the Nano, the world’s cheapest car.

Phongsavanh Construction Company is part of the Phongsavanh Group, which has been in business for more than 30 years. The group has expanded into various sectors such as wood processing, import-export of consumer goods, petroleum, construction, hotels, telecommunications and banking. Phongsavanh Airlines, its latest business venture, is expected to seal the group’s reputation.

The business cooperation agreement between Phongsa-vanh Construction Company and Tata International was signed by Mr Somboun Phongsavanh and Mr O.K. Kual in Vientiane on Tuesday, in the presence of many businesspeople and high ranking officials.
