Dengue fever in Laos 42 death 18,000 infected.

There an outbreak every year. Why didn't government do more to prepare and help the people? Vietnam should to help Laos. They are in charge of Laos.

(KPL) Lao health officials and the World Health Organisation have expressed concern over the current severe outbreak of dengue fever after forty-two people were reportedly died of the dengue fever out of 18,000 infected cases nationwide.

The outbreak of dengue fever hit a high record this year, three folds over the figure in 2005, according to the data collection of the National Centre for Laboratory and Epidemiology (NCLE).

The statement was made at a meeting on dengue fever prevention and control for the mass media, held at Don Chanh Palace Hotel, last Friday.

DSC_0012-ff.jpgDr Reiko Tsuyuoka, a team leader of Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response of the World Health Organisation to Laos, said that dengue fever was endemic in many countries of the region and the Lao PDR and the Philippines suffered wide outbreaks this year. Since early this year till 18 September, more than 18,000 cases and 42 deaths from dengue fever have been reported to the NCLE by 16 provinces.

Since the start of the rainy season, cases are continuing to be reported at high levels. The last large dengue epidemic occurred in Laos in 2003 when 17,500 cases were recorded for the year. This years figure reported is even higher than 2003s.

Seventy per cent of the people at risk of dengue fever live in Asian-Pacific countries. WHO takes dengue fever very seriously and assists governments in the region to make a vigorous response. Increasing coordination between government services is key in the fight against this resilient disease.

In addition to traditional approaches for dengue control, such as the use of insecticides, a multi-sector response is underway by the Government of Laos. Initiatives include a clean-up campaign in all schools of Vientiane Capital since August and involvement of the Lao Womens Union and temples to engage the community in the destruction of mosquito-breeding sites. Other measures include enhanced surveillance, community health education and update training in care of dengue patients for hospital and health centre staff.

In spite of these efforts, dengue fever cases remain high so she hopes that todays briefing meeting will open up new communication channels to the public to be vigilant and update on dengue issues. It is important that communities receive clear and consistent messages to take appropriate action to combat dengue fever. To reduce the risk of dengue fever, individuals must avoid mosquito bites and communities need to work together to eliminate all the standing water, where mosquitoes lay eggs, such as household water containers, tins, bins, and tires in community.

Dr Anothai Kongsayasack, Deputy Head of the Centre of Information and Education for Health, said that the mosquito carrying dengue fever has developed with capacity to lay out larvae on all water sources and bite day and night due to the global warming. So far there have been only children infected with dengue fever but now adults have also fallen victim to the dengue fever.

He has called on all media to disseminate information on dengue prevention to local people.

Very sad I'm wondering if this is some kind of biological weapon to destroy Laos economies. 18,000 infected is crazy.

Chiip what city you live in Laos?

we have to find the way to kill those mosquitoes in this rainy season, I guess , the govt don't provide some $$ enough to help the remote areas, where is the $$??

the Dr must go to the remote villages to give them a speech and teach how to prevent the disease and protect their children from the disease, Sleep at day or night must be in the mosquito net and crackdown the mosquito in every possible places. Boiling the water before drinking is very important and preventing from many diseases, I know that there are still many villagers drinking unclean water and the water container doesn't cover well, thats why this is another way to spreading this disease.

when the children or weak people got the disease , the family and villagers must transfer them as soon as possible to the Hospital and the hospital and clinic must do a well parepared for this disease blabla...

there are many dengue outbreak on earth, but We can prevent it and we can cure it....

Sok dee.

Not only in Laos//

but they don't die because of this disease:

Dengue cases hit record weekly total for the year

CONCERN: Officials are worried that the total number of dengue fever cases this year could exceed 1,000 and the CDC was monitoring the spread of conjunctivitis

BY SHELLEY HUANG
STAFF REPORTER
Wednesday, Sep 15, 2010, Page 2
Following the confirmation of 49 new indigenous cases of dengue fever last week, the Centers for Disease Control yesterday said officials now expect the total number of infections in Taiwan to exceed 1,000 this year.

The figure set a record for the highest number of new cases in a single week this year. In the past week, 19 cases of migratory dengue were also confirmed, CDC Deputy Director Chou Jih-haw (周志浩) said.

To date, there have been 370 confirmed cases of dengue fever in Taiwan, most of which were concentrated in areas of Kaohsiung City and Tainan County, where the estimated number of mosquitoes carrying the virus has reached dangerous levels, officials said.

“There have been a lot of migratory cases. If these cases are not treated properly, the outbreak could be even more serious,” Chou said.

Chou said the highest incidence of dengue fever occurred in 2002, when 5,332 cases were reported. Officials were closely monitoring the situation and hoped this year’s outbreak would not reach such proportions. Still, it was not impossible that more than 1,000 cases could occur this year, health officials said.

The CDC urged households to maintain clean and dry environments, as mosquitoes carrying the dengue virus can easily proliferate where water has gathered in ditches, vases and other containers.

The authorities said they would step up efforts to warn residents against the risks of allowing water to gather and conduct inspections, as well as issue fines of between NT$3,000 and NT$15,000 to violators.

Health authorities said people who come down with a fever or experience drowsiness after being bitten by mosquitoes should seek medical treatment immediately, as these could be signs of serious illness.

Aside from dengue fever, the CDC was also keeping tabs on the spread of acute conjunctivitis — commonly known as red-eye syndrome — in eastern parts of the country.

Previously, the number of new cases had remained at low levels of between 10 and 20 per week, but recently, as many as 60 new cases have been reported every week.

Health officials were concerned that the outbreak may be linked to an increasing number of enterovirus infections.

Red-eye syndrome is a highly infectious disease that can be transmitted through eye secretions, for example, by touching one’s eyes without first washing one’s hands.

The incubation period is typically between 12 hours and 48 hours. Symptoms include eye irritation, a burning sensation in the eyes, excessive sensitivity to light, watering of the eyes, a feeling of foreign matter in the eyes and mucous eye discharge.

I was from Vientiane. But some of my relative are from Isan. So dengue fever is all over Asia, but it worse in Laos, like khontakek say, government should provide more money to help the villager.

when you see water stagnation, standing water in your yard or around your community
you can help pour out and drain the water from containers and pots, etc.

in some instances, i wonder if it would be safe to coat the
water surface with like vegetable oil, something less toxic,
to prevent the mosquitoes from laying eggs and to trap and kill those that are hatching.
